I have been out of riding for a few years and I have decided to get another bike, a S4R Monster to be exact.  I am looking to get a used bike and I was wondering what the differences are between the model years?  I am looking at anything from an 03 to an 06.  Are there any specific issues with any model year?  Also what should I look for when inspecting a used bike?  Any commen problem areas to look for?  Thanks so much.

Biggest difference is between the earlier S4R and the S4RS is the engine.  The original S4R had the 996 motor and the S4RS got the 999 Testastretta motor.  So you're talking entirely different engines.  Keep in mind any known issues/problems will be model specific since they have different engines.

Aside from that there is the S4RS and the S4RT.  The S is the top of the line with Ohlins bits and pieces and the T is the standard S4R.  The T is for the Testastretta motor so it doesn't get confused with the original S4R.

I had an original S4R and the only trouble I had with it was the paint peeled off the radiator.  Other than that she ran fine the entire time I had her.

Thanks for the info.  I guess I am only looking at the S4R for monetary reasons so I am only looking at the 03-05 models.  Sounds like there is not much difference between the years.

Only differences I'm aware of are what colors were available.

But, yeah, buy Derby's bike.

Great looking bike but unfortunatly I am looking for something a little more tricked out.  Mods cost and arm and a leg in the retail market.
