Bad Gas (of the petroleum variety)

I just wanted to share an experience I recently had with some bad gas so that someone else hopefully doesn't run into the same problems.

I have about 5500 miles on my bike, and about 300 miles ago I noticed it started running a little funny. It was running fine in the lower RPM's (below 5k) but above that it was falling on it's face. It was also stalling every once in a while at stoplights/ stopsigns which I figured was just because of the hot Texas weather 90 deg +.

I thought right away it was bad gas so I added a little dry-gas , and ran a couple hundred miles to see if it cleared up on it's own. Well after cycling a few tanks of gas through, and still not experiencing any change I thought maybe something other than bad gas was to blame so I took my bike into the dealer hoping it was something the warranty would cover.

When the dealer called to tell me to pick up my bike they said I has some pretty nasty stuff in my gas tank, and that the filter was clogged so bad it was restricting the fuel pressure. Well $240.00 later ( apparently warranty doesn't cover crappy gas  [roll]) I had my bike back. The good news is it was like a completly different machine. It's amazing what something as simple as a fuel filter can do to performance.

Moral of the story is.... gasoline these days really sucks [bang] Be carefull where you get your fuel, and make sure you change the fuel filter at least every 6k.

So, where did you end up buying the bad gas from?

And, did you ever find out what was clogging the fuel filter?

I don't know for sure where it came from I think it was a combination of places. I only like to use Shell or Chevron but with only about a 100 mile tank range it's hard to be picky sometimes.

The stuff in the filter looked like dirt, and there was alot of water in the drip pan also.
