Carlsberg at the moment. [drink] Got to liking those while in Denmark earlier this summer. [beer]
Did someone say interesting beers? Should I start the Belgian beer list?
[beer]
Well, at this precise moment I'm not drinking anything, but I do have a couple of Tongerlo in the fridge, and two days ago I was at a place that claimed to have 2004 beers in stock (delirium café). Yeah, you read that right: 2004 different beers. I even drank a coconut beer (Coconut Mongozo), and yes: it is horrible.
But here is the short list of what I've had so far in belgium:
Stella Artois (the local beer, brewed less than 2 miles from here)
Jupiler
Maes
Leffe Blond
Leffe Donker/Bruin
Leffe 9*
Hoegaarden
Hoegaarden citrus
Hoegaarden rosée
Hoegaarden Grand Cru
Kasteel
Chimay Red
Chimay Tripple
Chimay Blue
Duvel
Delirium Tremens (from the Delirium Café, the place with 2004 beers)
Lucifer
Belgoo
La Guilotine
Petrus Tripple
[beer]
And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few...
Yes, that's right. I'm the little kid who doesn't know how to play along and has to one-up everybody. [laugh]

Used to wear out the one they had outside of Hot Springs, AR. But that has been a long time ago. I liked the dual Ma-Deuce set up on the back of a military jeep. Had a video of my ex wife working over a friend's M-60 on a tri-pod. Pretty damn funny. We rode up once on the old Beemer R100RS and my friends hauled my stuff. Good times for sure... but it's been a while. [thumbsup]

I've noticed a few differences, but not in the abbey beers (not that I drank a lot of abbey beers in the states). One big difference is Heineken, which now tastes like a much lighter beer than what I remember, and of course Stella, which tastes much better from the tap than from a can (don't they all?). Now, I think the "watery taste" of Heineken might be due to a subconscious comparison to every other beer I've been drinking here.
If there is any difference in the abbey beers, its in the way they are served. Here most beers have a specific glass they must be served in, and any café/bar/pub/restaurant worth anything will have the proper glasses for every beer they serve (as well as generic tulip-shaped beer glasses for foreign beers). These glasses are supposed to "release the aroma, preverve the froth, enhace the flavor, etc...". Do they do that? Maybe, I'm no connoisseur. But I do prefer drinking out of those glasses than out of a pint or pilsner glass.
Here are a few examples of
proper beer glasses:
Chimay:

Delirium Tremens:

And so on and so forth...
As for the Spa, it is really close to where I'm at.. not much more than 50 miles. But unfortunately F1 tickets are prohibitively expensive (as are motogp tickets here), and without a car those 50 miles start looking like a long trip... If there was a direct train it would be one thing, but the suggested route is train->walk->bus->bicycle.
So I'm doing the next best thing, recording the training sessions, and hopefully I'll get to watch the race tomorrow (the DVR will be busy with WSBK, which for some silly reason is on live at EXACTLY the same time as F1). Oh, these silly europeans!

Maredsous is good stuff... which one did you have? IIRC, they have a 6% blond, 8% dark, and 10% tripel. I haven't tried the tripel yet, but the others are quite good!
BTW, there was a beer festival in brussels this weekend... life is good!

It was pretty good (for Frisco). The Shepherds Pie and the fish and chips were both way too greasy however there were many good beers to choose from and many young waitresses to ogle; so they've got that going for 'em.

They only had the 8% (which will do in a pinch). My favorite is the Tripel. Give it a go the next time you get a chance. You won't be disappointed.
Glad to hear things are going well Andre. [beer]
Never seen the blond. The 8 & 10% are both great but I like the 10% the best. And not just for the extra 2%.
Those strong beers are dangerously good... at the beer festival I had a chance to try a Malheur Donker, a 12% beer. Very tasty dark beer (as the name implies).
Also had a chance to try DeuS, am 11.5% beer/"barley champagne" which is surprisingly good. This, of course, was after drinking a Kwak and a Tripel Karmeliet, two 8% beers from the same brewery (both quite good as well).
And fine, I also had a Brugze Zot blond. Yes, I drank a lot of beers, but it was a beer festival, dammit! And I really only had half of each, since I was trading beers with my cousin. Stop judging me!!! [laugh]
The funny part was that I had a breathalyzer test afterwards, knowing that I was in no shape to drive (not that it matters, I took the train to and from brussels), and passed!
Proof that I was there (with the Malheur Donker in one hand and the DeuS in the other):

What's even more incredible is that it is not uncommon to go out at 9 or 10am and see people at cafe's drinking beers, or to see cyclists stop in the middle of the day, drink a tripel or two, and then keep going. I feel their liver's pain!
so, Piraat Ale, huh? I"ll keep an eye out. If you get a chance, try a Kasteel... a very nice 11,5 or 12% one. Or better yet, get a Hoegaarden Grand Cru, but you must drink it from a big enough glass. Just opening the beer creates so much foam I had to spend 10 minutes sipping foam from the bottle when I drank it at a party. Fantastic beer, though.

Water
Mata Hari Absinthe at Cafe Rembrandt. C'mon green fairy!!
got a bottle here at home. also tried the Pernod version. Experimenting with different methods of drinking it, and waffle back and forth between whether or not to add water... definitely do the "absinthe soaked sugar cube", ignited, and then pitched into the glass... but sometimes adding water in there as well softens the absinthe pregnant dog slap that awaits your first sip....
Mine was prepared "Bohemian" style, with the flaming cube. It turned a caramel brown and she poured the water on it when it was nearly burned out. Pretty mild served that way. They have a few versions, so I want to try some more.

This is from Shiners website in the "Anniversary Beers" section.
"In 2005, five years out from our Centennial Anniversary, we introduced the first in a series of limited-edition, commemorative brews. We called it Shiner 96
Märzen-Style Ale. We continued our countdown to our 100th Anniversary with Shiner 97 Bohemian Black Lager and Shiner 98 Bavarian-Style Amber.
In the final year of the countdown, we happily introduced our latest anniversary brew, Shiner 99 Munich-Style Helles. Just like Shiner 98, Shiner 97 and Shiner 96, this brew pays tribute to the Czech and German farmers who settled Shiner, Texas and began brewing their Old World beers back in 1909. So raise your glass to them as we celebrate 99 years of brewing fine beers."I liked the Helles but I'm liking the Commemorator better. [thumbsup] [beer]
That's pretty cool Shiner info. Didn't know they were doing all the anniversary beers except the Hellis last year. Those other ones sound good, wonder why they don't continue to make them. Stef picked up some Hellis and Commemerator on the way home tonight. Both good. Need to drink a lot more to decide which I prefer.

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.'"

Enjoy it now, sooner maybe it's gonna be the end of "La Fin du monde" the best one of Unibroue, it's the one i prefer. In the past, in the 90's Unibroue was Québécois brewery, started by Robert Charlebois, french rock singer. In 2004 Sleeman (Ontario) bought Unibroue, then in 2006 Sapporo bought Sleeman. So now La Fin du monde is still produce in Québec, but manage by Japanese who after some market studies, supposely, want to stop Unibroue production ??? :'(
Nothing is done by now, so La Fin du monde, La Maudite, La Blanche de Chambly, La Trois-Pistoles, l'Éphémère, Don de Dieu, & Raftman are still available to chill after a day ride, but for how long?....
After this long replypoststory i'm gonna bought a six pack La Fin du monde au Dépanneur du coin, beer for the end of the workday too
