Title: practice day/track day
Post by: Zaster on May 16, 2008, 08:19:08 PM
Thought it's time to get serious about getting some track day practice for anyone interested in becoming a better and safer rider.
Dillon expressed interest in coaching us if we can do it on a Monday, his day off. If a Monday is out for
most of the group we can ask savy riders like Keith to share their knowledge with the group or possibly have two track days.
Let me know who's interested and what days work for you.
Basic requirements: $30/hr per person, safety gear (will check on rentals for leathers and boots if requested),
I will take care of the tape, would like to have a first aid trained person attend,
full tank of gas, knowledge of basic track rules (will be handled prior to start),
bring your own bike, yourself and have a blast....and post away.

Hey guys,
We had a great time in Germany enjoying the weather and company. Did get jealous though everytime I saw
a bike riding by...
I guess I should have asked you before volunteering your services for a track event [moto]
Let me know if this works for you.

Update...
I made reservations for June 23 from 9:00 A.M to 10:00 A.M.
Please let me know if this works for everyone interested.
This date can be changed but keep in mind that DucMouse needs at least
a 3 week window.
Kingbaby, can you check with the potential instructors to see if this works for them?

Calendar check needed....
I was told by several folks last night that they couldn't make the June 23rd date and would prefer June 30.
Also, how many of you would be interested in a two hour session, I can always tack on an extra hour.
Please post or PM me with any questions or concerns  [moto] or cheapshots  ;D

Seems like keeping both days would work out, as long as at least two people commit to each day.  That way, everyone has a chance to go.
including the birthday girl.

I'm going to try to make the 23rd.  I can't absolutely commit but I'll give my best shot.  I'd like to see if I can haul that beast around a track.  How much was it going to cost per person?   [moto]

Yes, Kawbell, I will be over 30, finally.   :'(

Hey, if you go on the 23rd, it will be like motorcycle safety class again.  Only this time, we won't be sitting on eliminators or whatever those little things were.  We will be on our own beasties.  How fun is THAT!   [moto]

$80 for the first two riders ($40 each) and $30 per hour per person for every subsequent rider. We have to split the $25/hr for the EMT amongst the group which is required for a group bigger than two riders. [moto]

Yeah, this birthday will be a tricky one so I am planning a day that is sure to have a successful outcome.   [clap]  I can hear the angels screaming with laughter even as I type.   [cheeky]  Lance wants to see me go spank it at the track but that is an unknown territory of an uncertin outcome whereas treading on a summit in Colorado has proved to be a certain dose of good medicine, never fail.   [thumbsup]

Have fun up there and enjoy your birthday. Your bike and your riding skills will help make it a safe and memorable outing, some higher protection from the boneheads out there doesn't hurt though. [moto]

Yes, I booked a 1 hr session starting at 9:00 A.M. for both June 23 and 30th.

Ratfink,
Glad you can make it.
I will leave the instructional portion to the experts aka kingbaby. He has the riding and track experience needed to  make this a great learning event while emphasizing safety.
Show up early for instructions, bike prep etc.

Only req. for spectators is that they need to sign in at the office..
EMT will be available at a cost of $25/hr
Since this is our first day at the track we need to put the utmost emhasis on safety and learning how to
navigate the course in an organized manner. This will help maximize the learning experience while making
this outing a fun event for people with all riding skills.

Had a blast today.. Thanks again for setting this all up, I really wish I could be at the next one... But I gotta go out and be a Best Man in Indiana (he couldnt put the wedding off til MotoGP weekend.. I tried)  I felt really off today when I tried to push it a little, My brain still is in "Oh my god I might lowside in the DoubleApex again" mode and it threw me way off..   so I guess Its gonna be more practice for me..  I can't get my mind off the stupid seams in the asphalt.  Good to see everyone.  It was great.

It was a perfect day !   Thank you all for being a part of it. Especially Pam for being the best crew chief / photographer ever.     We rode until we couldn't see straight.   Had EMT, food , water , wide open track & conquering our demons all for $39.   it doesn't get any better.    Hope to see more of you out there next monday @ 8:30 .

Is that you, Dillon?  Thank YOU for joining us!  I really appreciated the time you and Kingbaby both took to show us some smooth lines around the course and general track instruction.  It was very helpful to a rookie.  I was floored, I mean really floored by the expertise with which you guys navigated the track.  Fast and smooth.

Hey, WDB, I didn't get alot of action shots because most of the time I was on the track myself.  There at the end I was able to shoot some video but it was mainly Dillon and Louis still out there by then.   Pam got some good shots though so I will see if I have anymore that you might like.

Due to popular demand tomorrow's practice day will be postponed/rescheduled.
Let me know which dates works for you, especially for the folks that didn't have the opportunity to
take advantage of the fine teaching skills offered by several members of our group.
This is the best way to enhance your riding skills in a very safe environment and with an
awesome group of people to boot [thumbsup]

Kingbaby,
I'm down (I think that's the proper hip english, help me ducmouse) for a practice day on the 10th of August.
Would be a great tune up for our Ouray ride and it never hurts to work on improving your riding skills and to hang with your peps.
I highly recommend this for anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to take advantage of the fine teaching skill
of our group members and their one on one instructions on the race track.

I sat outside a Harley shop on my Duc in Glenwood Springs last summer while I waited for the fellow I was running around with to go in a buy a t-shirt.  The sales girl waved me in and said "we don't bite".  I smiled  under my helmet.  I managed to get all the way through my Sturgis trip without setting foot upon the threshold of a HD shop either.  Stubborn and close-minded about sums it up.   [thumbsup] [moto]

I'm interested in getting together for a tune up before the start of riding season to get rid of the winter cob webs. The last group practice day was fun, educational and it helped advance my limited riding skills.
I can't think of a better way to get our group to practice and improve their safe riding skills. Hopefully we can count on the same two instructors that made the last outing a great learning experience..... [moto]

Based on the "whos riding this weekend" thread.  Does anyone else want to do a cruise around / track day any time soon?

Cost: $38 per person (6 minimum).
Done & home by 11am  (worn out).

Being a spectator at the races today and talking to several folks who attended our last private practice day, I'm inclined to suggest a NMMR or Hooligan track day in September or October.
Riding with folks we know is far better far than taking a chance with some unpredictable riders.
Who's game and willing to improve their skills?

Yep, same here, I'm in if I have a bike and good tires. That track day ate 70% of my tire life and I just put them on before Ouray! I'm giving in my bike for valves the first week of September. PJ's expects 1 week to a month depending on some recent issues on beat up cams!!! I hope it is one week, you know I'm gentle on my bikes!  ;) But, if there is an opportunity, I'll never miss it!!! Such an addiction...my dreams last two days have been those corners... [thumbsup]

Aww, you guys. I don't think I was going that fast. I was just having fun. It's pretty fun when you don't have to worry about wadding up your good bike. I don't want to go down on any bike. The tires are pretty good too. The Pilot Power One's that are on there stick like glue to the track so I am sure that has a lot to do with it. As far as going to expert, I don't know about that. I think I am far from that. I thought about it, but those guys are FAST! Either way, I had a blast out there.

You don't get faster riding with slow folks, Craig.

As to the slipper clutch, JJ, it won't get rid of lash issues. You should learn how to practice the art of "throttle-blip-for-the-downshift-whilst-braking" to overcome that.

You can safely downshift without upsetting the chassis by blipping the throttle before smoothly releasing the clutch, whether the brakes are engaged or not.  Blipping (not revving....but blipping) helps match the engine's RPM with the tire's RPM so it doesn't upset the chassis when you downshift.  It doesn't work if this sends the engine beyond its mechanical limits, exploding the engine, but as long as you're not banging down three gears and letting the slipper (that you don't have) do all the work it's fantastic.

Practice first without the brakes....just release the throttle in the upper half of a gear, then pull in the clutch, bang a downshift, blip the throttle, and ease out the clutch.  Do this until you can do it all smoothly and without spending time thinking about it.  It needs to be second nature.  Eventually you'll be blipping as you employ the lever to downshift simultaneously, but you don't have to start out that way.

Next, practice the same thing, but with mild pressure on the brakes in a non-critical braking situation (like in a parking lot or on a straight road with no traffic).  This cannot be done using the "four fingered braking" techniques learned in MSF, so you'll have to try something new which only works on modern bikes with good brakes.  Use either your index finger, or your index and middle finger to apply the brake.  (I, personally use my middle finger only, with my index finger laid on the brake lever pivot....but I'm odd like that)  keep your ring finger and your pinky finger wrapped (loosely....just like you were using all four fingers....no "death grip" required) around the throttle and lightly blip it with your thumb and two smaller fingers whilst downshifting.  Strive to keep constant pressure on the brake lever throughout....which is easier with a single finger on the brake, imho.  Your braking finger(s) should extend as you blip, then flex back to its (their) natural braking posture as you release the throttle.

At first, you'll be very jerky.  The pressure on the brake will either increase or decrease during this exercise until you get the hang of it, and that's why you do it in non-critical situations.  However, the skill isn't difficult and it comes quickly.  Most folks tend to increase pressure during this technique, so make sure there's nobody immediately behind you if you're practicing on the street.  You might stop more quickly than you'd like, or startle them with a jerky application of the front brake.   ;D

Good luck.  Holler if you think it doesn't work well for you and I'll explain how slipper clutches are for pussies with too much money.   [thumbsup]

Another great referance if you dont already have them are the Keith Code books, Twist of the Wrist and Twist of the Wrist II.  Both are full of lots of great track and road riding info. (mostly track)  I've read them 2 or 3 times now.  Rev matching works wonders on the track!  Before I learned how to I had a few instances of the bikes rear end coming around and getting squirrely on me.  This last trackday I had my rev matching down fairly well and it slowed and turned without upsetting the tire or chassis much at all!

Thanks, I have both volumes and I'll read them again. I have managed to blip as Scott suggested and it works...but I have to perfect it with high speed braking...It is an on and off thing for me...exhaustion plays a bit of role too...Sometimes, I have turned in towards Scott's infamous corner post and felt that I fell off a sky...its like a mind game...rather than the narrow corner radius it seems like a BIG SEA...must be exhaustion with heat...MIRAGE as they call it!

You were definitely the fastest guy on the track the last two sessions you rode except for a couple of control riders.  That said, don't move up until you're comfortable.  I still like to ride with the intermediate group occasionally.  That way you can ride with friends and you always have someone to pass. ;D

My report date is Jun '11. That's right around WDW btw. I think I might have to go hang out there for a few days. You are more than welcome there any time. Hopefully everything works out and I'm able to go. I should know in the next few months if the commander accepts me or not.

(thinking out loud)  I need to find a way with being comfortable going faster.  I know the bike can do it, my technique is decent, I just need to make my brain think I'm going slower than I really am and find a way to trust the tires more.  [coffee]

I had just found a track buddy and here you are running away...On the other side, we have a free place to camp in Italy?  ;) Good luck and get back to NM. We need more people come to track...Street is another world and track is where you feel you are back to square one on basics...I'll have to start saving to do a lot of track days next year around US.

That's the hard part, Wayne.  The only way I know to get there is by saddle time.    [moto]

Only for one brief period in my life did I believe I was fast.  In fact, I was twisting the throttle, riding for all I was worth at Road Atlanta wondering just how much faster any sum-biotch on Earth could be, I was so fast.  I knew I was the fastest fukker in Georgia that day........then Doug Polen went around the outside of me in turn 6 about 30 miles per hour faster than I was going with my knee on the deck....followed by Scott Russell, Dave Sadowski, Jamie James, and a host of other AMA regulars, all before turn 7....which ain't very far.  I then realized that the difference between my fast and their fast is considerable, and that I might never get to their level....and I never have.

You are absolutely correct that fast is mostly in the mind.  I, personally, believe that some people are simply able to gather and process information a few nanoseconds quicker than the rest of us, and that those few nanoseconds make the difference between fast and really fast.  If you play video games much, you'll run across those same chops in people who can ALWAYS get off a shot a little quicker, or duck a litle faster, or jump a little farther.  We can practice, and thereby train our brains to interpret inputs in a more favorable order, and process them to a more favorable outcome, but I'm not sure we can alter the rate at which our brains are wired to work.

I say this not by way of making excuses, but simply because its the only logical solution I've found to the question of what causes the obvious differences in comfort among riders of similar experience.  Some call it the "go fast gene".  I'm well past lamenting the fact that I have a mediocre version of that gene....I'm just happy that I was granted some degree of this set of skills, which enhance my awareness of true skill so that I can watch in awe, and with humble appreciation, as true practiotioners of the Art of Speed ply their trade.

I'll gladly help any of you reach your personal goals in motorcycling, and in life, if I can, given my meager skill set.  That said, there's no replacement for personal experience, and the only way to get that is simply to "DO".  Meanwhile, try this:

Find a benchmark.  Set a goal.  Figure out how to reach that goal.  Reach your goal.  Reassess.  Set a new goal.  "Lather.  Rinse.  Repeat."

As long as you set tough, well defined, reachable, but realistic goals, this simple technique will serve you well for the rest of you life, and in any venture you might leap into.

That's a little more than my two cents,

Cloner

[thumbsup] Absolute truth Scott! Thanks for being there and helping us...It helps in many ways and I'm grateful! I'm eager to learn, put more saddle time and get better if not be the best. I have come a long way in the last 3 years and there is so much more to go... [bow_down]

& on that note: I suck at every video game on the planet! Never been into video games...it was always bike, soccer & maybe math.

Post by: crat996 on September 14, 2010, 08:16:35 AM
I totally agree with Scott about seat time. I try to ride as much as I can. 1 so I can be faster and 2 to get the experience. I do feel I was much faster on the track this past weekend because I was comfortable out there. I just felt good on the bike. It was only the 2nd time on that bike and the 2nd time on that track but it felt good. I knew the track and the lines and I felt like I could just get out there and go. It will be different if they change the configuration on me:) I do feel like I am getting a lot better riding because I have been riding a lot lately. It's the seat time.

Got an email saying I registered for track day at SMRI website...but I didn't have a chance to pay. It shows pending...Not sure if this will happen, depends on tire state...but would love to do another session. When is the NMMR trackday?

JJ,
I can't wait to get out there myself since I couldn't make the last one. We just need some feedback from the NMMR folks to see who is interested and what dates work best...I think I remember that Nic expressed some interest while visiting NM during the first two weeks in October.
Would be nice to have some of our experienced track racers assist us in improving our passion  [moto]

I can do a Monday.   Morning's are preferred, but with October's dropping temperatures I can understand wanting to do one later in the day as well.  I can do pretty much any day if it comes down to it, just need a week or so ahead of time to let the boss know.

OK, I guess we need to get something going before we run out of riding season. How would October 4th work for all interested parties? I would need a head count to get a
cost estimate from SMRI.

If we do 1 1/2 hour like last time, we should be around $ 40 per person. I'll call tomorrow with the head count we have so far and
price a couple of options. If we get more folks to commit I'll see if we can get the track for two hours at the same price.

Update: It turns out that Monday's are now motorcycle practice days at the cost of $50 for 1/2 day or
$75 per rider for a full day. The action starts at 8:00 A.M and concludes at dusk ~6 P.M.
All you have to do is to show up and fork over the dough and you are good to go.
The usual safety measures apply: leather gear etc. and taping lights and mirrors.

Page 2 on SMRI guidelines (http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/trackdayguidelines.pdf (http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/trackdayguidelines.pdf)) for the track gears say: "One-piece riding suit in good condition made of leather, Kevlar, Aramid, or Cordura (i.e. Aerostich). Two-piece suits are acceptable as long as the
pants and jackets are joined with zipper(s) to create the equivalent of a one-piece suit."

Footwear and gloves need to be leathers according to it! However for tech inspection you only carry helmet and ride/push the bike...I was in my shorts, T-shirt and bathroom slippers!  :P At the pit entrance they don't pay attention to gears...maybe they do... [roll]

Now that I opened my mouth, I'm gonna get it from Cloner!   [evil]

All said, guess you should be fine...DON'T PLAN ON CHANGING GEARS AND TOURING OFFROAD! ;D

I've never been to a "practice day" but when we rented the track for the last NMMR trackday nobody checked anything. We suited up, taped up, hit the track, then paid the lady. Since this is an organized "practice day" it may be run differently.  Scott, Any input here?

I don't believe SMRI is affiliated with these "practice days" at all, so I have no idea what to expect.  Karl, can you call and find out whether or not the track is hosting this?

Either way, for what we're talking about a nonleather (synthetic) riding suit should be fine as long as it zips together around the circumference of your waist.

I doubt they'll have an official tech inspector out there.  There will probably be no corner workers and no ambulance, but if the track is putting something on they may have a meatwagon.

JUST BE CAREFUL!!

I'll wait on your post Karl to take off on Monday as I need to give a notice to my boss. If there is not much headcount we should just do the Oct16 track day as there are all facilities for a full track experience. The cost is similar 75 to 95. I would do both if I can, but my tires may not last two!

Scott,
I'm in for a Monday Practice Day.....   [thumbsup]

I wasn't on your original request list, but I fit into the category of ..."Anybody!"

I'll bring the piece of junk #2,  SR500 and also the yellow Honda.  The POJ #2 now runs reasonably well, but starting it is a B-i-t-c-h.  If necessary, I can do the ever popular and exciting tow start.  I do need a second guilty party for the tow vehicle.  ...It's the redneck's ....roller starter.

The "Nice"  #1,  SR500 runs well and starts fine but it is too delicate to associate with the likes of you and the Duck Bunch.  So, ... it's the Alley Cat  ... #2,  SR500 that you will have to deal with.  That Aermacchi is in my sights... bring it if you dare....!  .....Got the big motor in that puppy yet?     [laugh]

I assume the Monday "practice day" is this like a regular track day with the same requirements for taping mirrors, tail lights....and the use of track suits, boots,... etc.

Are you planning for a full day of fun or just a morning blast of the track?

It starts at 8 AM and ends at sundown for the full day event or around 1 PM for the half day folks.
Either way you will have a ride since Pam will attend in the chase vehicle and she can drop you off anytime you want ;D

Bring a pop up if you want shade.  There isn't much to be had.  I'll need shade, as I intend to ride to the track, so who's bringing shade?

There is some electricity, but you have to be careful where you pit.  What do you need tire warmers for?  Running slicks?

What the hell is "HH".  I'll probably be game for a light meal (as I've already committed to a relatively heavy dinner Tuesday night for DucNight with Nic and whomever else decides to attend).

HH is the secret code for Happy Hour. A lite meal sounds good. I'll need sustenance before a 3 hour drive home [thumbsup]

Dragon Supercorsas. I've had trouble with them heat-cycling/blueing in the past... Besides, I have brand new tire warmers & I want to use them! ;D

I'm running Dragon Supercorsa Pro on front and Pilots on rear...slide few knees...No issues, track is full of quick turns and it is nothing short of a saw blade (rough!!!)..You can cook an egg on the first lap! That being said, please bring the tire warmers and I'll snuggle through the premorning session! ;D

Just one more important detail...food
Since we are planning on spending a good amount of our time on the track
without having to worry about lunch details, Pam volunteered to bring food from
the feast days in Taos to keep our strength up.
Ed was kind enough to sample it for us in Taos and should be able to give
us a detailed culinary review. If anyone can bring an additional crock pot we should
have the capacity to feed the whole crowd. [thumbsup]

Wow!.......

If Pam is bringing food from the Taos Feast Day, my advice is to look for her car, then immediately pit and turn off your motor.  You are about to enter culinary heaven!   [bow_down]

Pam and her family can cook up a storm.  If you ever get the chance to meet them, you are in for a rare treat.  They not only cook like queens but are also great fun to talk to.

For details, see me in the pit area as I stand on my truck and use my binoculars to look for Pam's car coming over the horizon!.....   :o

I got my tire on Friday and the bike is in the truck. I will be there around 8ish. Steve from MotoAuthority says he'll be there too. He told me that last week but he ended up dirt riding Sun. and being too tired Mon. to come. My buddy from base just got an 1198 will be there minus the 1198. He has a speed triple and will probably be on that.

See ya'll there.  [moto]

Here's some happiness shared out of my practice day. I used the Ducati Data Analyzer available in my bike on the track and recorded few good laps. I started slow and managed to get lap times of 2' 12" (two minute 12 seconds). Through the day after lot of sliding dragging knees, dropped it to 1' 5" 300 and the best lap of 1' 4" 600! I'm not sure if it is best comparing with race times of under one minute to 52" 9 by Ray and rest of the top cream around 55" on expert 1000 class including Troy. I may be comparing apples to oranges. But, hell...I improved like crazy and I'm motivated beyond belief as I left room during practice and can do a lot better! Here's a comparison of my best lap of 1' 4" 600 and 1' 5" 300 runs through an average 1.25 miles course lap I did...Top speed shows 100mph. Cool stuff, eh? Thoughts?  [thumbsup]

Typically, the club bestows the "expert" title upon any racer who can safely maintain sub 1:00 lap times, so you're damned near an expert racer by SMRI's definition, and without ever turning a wheel in anger.    [bow_down]

For reference, my best lap times ever on the fabulous 26 horsepower HD/Aermacchi are just under 1:10....about 5 seconds per lap slower than your 150 horsepower 1098.   ;)  Corner speeds are higher than most of the modern bikes (simply because the bike doesn't weigh anything), but top speed is only about 80 mph and it takes FOREVER to get there....so the lap times are slow.  I read War and Peace during my last trip down the front straight on the HD.

So, another awesome trackday and back in one-piece! [thumbsup] Thanks to Wayne for great company and not sure where the rest disappeared! Thanks to Nick & Barb for coming by and motivating...& to Scott for, well telling Molly how to replace my track bike with a Mini in a PERFECT WAY ;) [clap] ...so I started slow, managed to do 3 intermediate sessions without anyone but one passing me, a cheeseburger and then to expert session. Good thing about expert group, they pass well when they do and usually you have the track to self and no crazy braking & unexpected lines as in Inters! First session I was too scared, had the burger moving around and had 1 minute 5 or 4 lap times wondering when a crazy rider would pass! Got comfortable in the next session doing consistent SAFE 1 minute 3 laps (5 times) and a best lap of 1 minute 2sec 300 and second best of 1 minute 2 sec 400 and third best of 1 minute 2 800! [cheeky]  [moto] Unfortunately, the year ends and I need to get back all skills learnt again! :'(

I did find many areas to improve, but had to play wise with my rear tire almost done, riding on sliding limits..If I had a race engineer, I would tell him/her- I need to change gear ratios, play a little suspension and mostly get me more traction (slicks ;D), so I could open throttle faster in the turn than I did because I was 200% certain I would FLY off the bike; apart from of course the fact that my beautiful degrading Tricolore can use spare fairings...All I can say to ALL is, track days are unlimited wealth of EXPERIENCE! Here's my two best 1'2"300 and 1'2"400 laps (turn #s may be understood wrong). What say you WISE folks?  :-\

It was a great 4 sessions I road.  I stayed conservative and didn't do anything stupid.  I have some great video of JJ passing me like I'm standing still.  (I think I was about 10 seconds behind his pace per lap).  Thank-you Scott for allowing me to borrow and use your video camera.  Thank-you Nick and family for stopping by and visiting for a while, and Thank's JJ and Molly for the great trackside company during the day!  I had a swiss-army backpack full of tools, water, food, and whatever else I could think of except for one important thing: Sunscreen.  I'm a little red now.. but all told I had a great day and I'm already looking forward to the next one next year!

Wedding was great!  Got there on time, it was at the Fort Marcy Lodge/Compound.  After all of the track time then the drive up, I was ready for a nap.  But we had a lot of fun and my friend was successfully married. Even being worn out we ended up having a great time and got back home at 11:30.

I'm glad everyone had a good day at the track Saturday, and an excellent ride to Taos on Sunday.

The final race of my season ended poorly as I made an incorrect jetting decision and the bike ran so poorly I pulled in.  Those of you who saw the first race of the season know how poorly it'd have to be to get me to pull off, so I'll leave it to your imagination how bad it was.  To compound that frustration, Brian Robertson wadded badly in turn two as I was about to leave and hit his head pretty hard.  We finally talked him into a ride to the hospital (on his part mostly to look at his shoulder, but I was more interested in the CT scan as he was acting pretty funny), so I loaded him up and took him to Lovelace and sat with him whilst the Doctors poked, prodded, and finally declared him fit for duty.  Those of you who rode at the track day might recognize Brian as control rider #242 on the blue GSX-R 600.

I sure hope next season starts better than this one ended.    [bang]

I also hope this BEAUTIFUL weather holds out for another week or twenty.  I'd sure like to go for a relaxing ride sometime soon.   [moto]

Sorry Scott, I can imagine how disappointing it must have been! :-\ I'm sure next season will be awesome...For one, you will have company! [moto] I'm also sorry about Brian...I did see him help us out as the control rider...We are so much on the limits there, but allowing some room helps and I'm glad I rode with my head this track day and still gained enough.

As for season, there is lot more riding left up north...so don't worry...Lets do the long day ride through Taos, Black lake, Angel fire...the coming weekend...if all is well.

Depends on what time is worth I figure. but the track, It's a big fast track & I love it. You'll be able to use more than 2nd gear on your bike there. Also some very technical corners.
Have had zero time to even think about a track day in some time, but last time I went I was riding a 999s & had a blast.

I'll be fulfilling my role as Chief Corner Marshal for the trackday.  I hope many of you can make it!  This event will be in the new configuration, so you can do something new if you haven't ridden this course, yet.

Once again, you can go to the SMRI website at

http://www.smri-racing.org/season/view.php (http://www.smri-racing.org/season/view.php)

for the whole year's schedule of trackday and racing events.

After the June 5th event, the next trackday is July 10th in the standard configuration (the site says new config, but Sandia BMW demands that it be the standard config, and since they're the sponsor they get what they want!).

I'll try to remember to post something two weeks prior to each of the season's remaining trackday and race events.

BTW, if you're not going 'cause you can't afford it, I can pay you $50 to come out and work as a corner marshal at trackday or race events.  That covers 2/3 of the cost of a trackday if you buy your ticket from the event sponsor.  So far this year, we've been short of corner marshals on a couple of occasions so we could use the help!

I registered for track day this weekend, but still need to swing by Moto Authority to pick a ticket on Saturday.

Scott- I can do corner work on race day as I won't my Aermacchi ready I guess...! :'( Will update as we go...But, I plan to do all track days if I'm in town! C'mmon folks, line up and do track days...no better learning! [Dolph]

Steve will be at the trackday, so if you'll call him I'm sure he'll bring your ticket to the track.  You don't need it to get through the gate, just at registration.

Does that mean I should write you in as a corner marshal for the 26th?  If we thrash it we could probably get the Aermacchi rideable for a few hundred bucks before the 26th if Ron can weld up a manifold.  That and controls are the major problems now.....and fork tubes.....and fork seals....I think that's it.

OK, I'll call Ron today...I'll confirm corner work this track day. I'll do it if I'm not racing, promise. [thumbsup]

Not my best trackday, but survived it and enjoyed a bit...good reminder I need to drop few pounds and get back to fitness. Two riders blew it in front of my eyes!  ??? 16 bottles of water, 3 liters of Gatorade and 2 EmergenC- HEAT! Crazy stunt show! Street tires and expert class meant muscle tussle into apex and some not so nice encounters with not so clean passes- control rider included. The carbon got quite some attention...so much so that a control rider wanted to leave a gash on my poor right fairing with his foot peg!  :'( Kept the bike up and barely managed to make it to SF...that's what matters! I need some $ and few upgrades real bad!!! [Dolph]

Was nice to see Scott, Craig and few others...!

Kathy (MotoAuthority and Karl's help!) did an awesome job on my suit zipper (blew on a high speed pass) and delivered it to track at 7am on half day notice! I now have a FAT FAT YKK zipper capable of top speed...My old torn suit is at her mercy currently as well...For any that crash or need leather help, you wont find a better help! PM me for number or contact Steve at MotoAuthority.

Silly question, but when is a good time to show up at the track? I guess there's a class or something for Newbies like myself in the morning to go over track rules and stuff like that? Can't really find anything on the website.

Had lots of fun at the track today, gained a lot of confidence in the bike and ended up scraping bits off my gear shifter and quite a lot off of my right peg.  :-X I saw Jim out there, and Ed and Scott were working corners. Really hot being out like that all day, went through 6 bottles of water and a large bottle of Gatorade. Sorry, didn't take any pictures or video. Maybe next time I'll try to get my hands on a helmet cam.

You looked smooth and confident out there, Caleb.  I considered bumping you to Intermediate several times, but after your group thinned out after lunch it looked like you'd actually get more clear track time where you were.  You were definitely the quickest rider in the beginner group at the end of the day, and several of the control riders commented on how smoothly you rode when I spoke with them after the event.  You should definitely register as an intermediate next time.

It was good to see you, Jim, Ed, Walker, and all the other folks out for another track day!

Yeah, right after we finished up one of the control riders told me that I should register as intermediate next time. I figure it was good that I got to stay in the beginner group though the entire day, however. Right up until the end I was still figuring out where I could go faster or maybe cut into a turn differently, especially after lunch when we had a bit more space, as you said. Can't wait for the next track day!  [thumbsup]

This note got a little long, so if you are in a hurry, please just skip it and move on.    [coffee]

My recent experience as a corner worker for this past Sunday’s Track Day just got me thinking and writing…...

I worked corner #1 in the North Hair Pin area for this past Track Day.   It was a great experience being part of the track control group, working to keep the track safe and watching the lines that riders took on the track.

Thanks, to Scott for his good management of the corner working crew and for putting up with my learning curve as I figured out how to work with the flags, radio, control riders, track status feedback and many other things that I had previously not considered as a rider.  …..My apologies to the control riders and other on the track control team for my fumbling, bumbling start.  I hope that I got better.

It was a great day also from the standpoint that no rider got an ambulance ride.  There was some scratched plastic and funny words mumbled as riders made mistakes and got off in the dirt.  But as far as I know, there were no serious injuries.

Here are some things that I learned:   [coffee]

The North Hair Pin area of the track requires as much respect as the South Hair Pin.  There were lots of "incidents" in this part of the course.

In the morning there were many more “off road excursions” than in the afternoon.  Part of this seems to be the pressure of adrenaline, ego, friends, larger riding groups and the rider expectations of themselves.  Too often these influences resulted in some riders pushing too far and too fast beyond their personal learning rates.

It is a good idea to work up in speed range only at the rate that you really can really absorb it.  If you start making mistakes, then back off.  Your mind is now operating slower than the speed of your bike.  Don’t let your ego write a check that your brain can’t cash…..It’s no shame to go slower and think about what happened, find a better line, better speed or different control inputs to the bike.

One good example was Caleb, who took it easy, worked up slowly, stayed in control and learned a lot.

In the afternoon, the mistakes seemed to be more related to riders being tired or not properly hydrated.  It’s hot out there and you use water to run your personal engine like your bike uses gasoline to run its engine.  If you feel tired or sluggish; rest, skip a session, look for shade and get water.

There were some beginning riders that were very slow, but to their credit they were out there and learning.   [Dolph]  Some stuck it out and worked at it all day….Good for them…. I could see their lines improving and even their speed improving…

Some of the advanced riders were scary fast….I have great respect for their personal control, ability to direct their motorcycles and read the track.  Most of the advanced riders were very consistent, especially the racer guys.  They were taking good track lines, with consistent times, and deep lean angles all day.……

…….One rider in particular kept me on edge all day.   :o   He was damn fast and as he approached my corner, he braked so hard with both front and rear brakes that I could hear his tires howling….right on the edge, ….every corner, ….every time,  ….all day…. really, really good,  [bow_down] ....but he also scared the crap out of me all day…

There is a corner worker’s manual for SMRI at:
http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/Corner_Workers_Manual.pdf (http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/Corner_Workers_Manual.pdf)

Some key ideas in the manual are “…..stay calm”, “report in on the radio” and “get the correct flag out and wave it” …..Well, I broke all those rules in the first 15 minutes.   â€œâ€¦.rider down, I shouted into the radio…. Then I realized that you have to push the damn button to talk…So, I repeated my self.  ….Where is the rider?… came back the reply….North Hair Pin…I shouted……and so it went as I fumbled my way along..…   [bang]  ”Sh*t”, I said to myself as I realized what a poor job I was doing.  …I vowed to do better….

It only took a few more minutes until I got to test my skills again….Better this time, I thought… but not good enough.  Eventually, I improved, but I’m sure that I tried the patience of all who heard me on the radio…. To them, I apologize.  …..There is significant skill involved in doing this job right, just as there are many skills in riding well.

Doing the corner worker’s job well also tests your own endurance.  :P   It is hot, and Turn #1 requires 360 degree coverage.  Owls would do well here with their 270 degree head swivels.  I just had to walk and turn in circles all day.  I had never walked 8 miles inside a 4 foot square on a tower before….  But, I did not get bored…There just was too much to watch and do.  Scott’s tower was even tougher.  He had no shade, just as much action and had to manage the rest of us as well.   8)

Track days are wonderful learning opportunities for people on the track or in the corners.  I hope that many of you will take time to be part of both experiences.

Thanks again to Scott for the opportunity.   [thumbsup]

Thanks to all for listening…..

-Ed

Ed.....you didn't do as poorly as you're beating yourself up for.   ;)  Thank you for coming out and supporting SMRI as you did.  You learned more than most from your experience in turn 1, so good on you for reflecting on that experience and trying to help others understand what you saw and what you learned.  Your "stay calm" note works for both corner workers and riders!

The rider you noted was 611, Daryl Wickern.  He's pretty doggone fast, but you haven't seen the business until you've seen Kelcey Walker or Mikey Shreve scream into those corners with the back hung out half a foot or more.  It's humbling to see what fast really looks like.

Thanks, again, to everyone who worked or rode at our track day.  We really appreciate your support of SMRI and motorcycle racing and track days in Albuquerque!   [thumbsup]

Already got my ticket for the next track day. Who's going for the 9th of October?  [Dolph]
Title: Re: practice day/track day
Post by: Cloner on September 18, 2011, 07:08:03 AM
I hope everyone who enjoys track days in Albuquerque will get out for the October 9th event, and bring a friend!  SMRI have lost money on EVERY track day event we've run this year with the exception of the one hosted by Sandia BMW (because they buy ALL the tickets and give most of 'em away via sponsorship by BMW corporate), which means changes are in order!

At the very least a fee increase is likely in 2011, and that's likely to be accompanied by structural and schedule changes, as well.  The causes of the losses are three-fold.  We started out the year badly with two dates of poor weather...one of near 30 degree cold, the second of rain.....both of which resulted in cancellations.  However, in both events some people rode so the costs of the track, insurance, etc. had to be absorbed by the club (if one bike goes on the track we're on the hook!).  Second, the track went up significantly on its fees this year for track rental, per-bike-fee (they charge us a flat rate plus a fee for each bike), and event insurance.  Finally, our attendance has been abysmal.  Added together, these factors mean the club lost its collective ass on track days this year.

We (the SMRI executive committee) are currently discussing how we can return our track days to profitability.  To that end, I'd like to ask those of you who've been to our track days,  what we can do to make them better for you?  More contact with instructors?  Fewer, more, or no defined groups?  Classroom instruction on some of the finer points of riding fast?  Better equipment rental system?  Help with bike prep?  Better advertisement of dates?  What can we do to make you WANT to come out more often?

I'd also like to ask those of you who HAVEN'T been out, "What can we do to get you to a track day?"  What's it gonna take to get you on the track?  I can fairly guarantee that once you come out you'll be hooked....so what's it gonna take?  A free half day?  A special group for track day newbies?  A Guided parade lap of the track at a moderate pace to demonstrate that it's just a road that makes a loop....on your bike, of course.....in your normal gear (nothing special....long pants, shoes over the ankles, jacket, gloves, helmet)...with no special prep at all....would that do it?  Begging?  Would just plain old-fashioned begging work.  If so....I'm BEGGING you to come out for a track day!!!

OK....with that said.....I'll be at Barber Vintage Festival for the largest gathering of Ducati freaks ever held in the western hemisphere on October 9th, so I won't be at the track.  However, lots of other good people will, and they'd love to see you!

I'll be there on the 9th. I stopped by Moto Authority yesterday and got my ticket.  My track attendance was definitely down this year but Babies apparently kill your time and money.. (Who knew?)  I'm still addicted to riding track days.  For me the only thing that would make it better (apart from having a dedicated track bike) would be further instruction.  Not necessarily full-on California Superbikes School classes, but I'd love to get some hints and find ways to improve my confidence while riding out there.  For whatever its worth.. If I could have done all of the track days this year, I certainly would have!

One thing that might attract new people is offer one or two laps free for new comers, where they get to check out the track, see that it's not all that scary, and then if they like it, they can purchase a ticket on site at a discount to ride the rest of the day. If you advertise this, it may help belay the fears that a lot of people might have about going to a track day. Chief among them is they don't want to spend all that money on a ticket only to find out after their first lap that it really isn't for them. Also setting aside a section of the pits for first timers to gather and talk may be good to help break people into the community nice and easy, and have some veteran volunteers go over to help with bike prep and answer questions about the track. Make sure this information is very easily available, and maybe even make posters aimed directly at first timers. Information on them like: Hands on instruction for bike prep, ride at your own pace, first two laps free, if you don't like it you don't have to pay, etc. Also try reaching out to some of the more outside dealers, like New Mexico Motorsports in Los Lunas and Westside Honda. I don't think I've ever seen a poster or advertisement at Westside Honda, and they have a fairly big clientele.

Another big thing may be offering half day tickets. I don't know if you already do this, but it may help bring in even more people, especially those that have something to do early in the morning or afternoon and don't want to pay for a full day pass. Also in July, a load of people left after lunch due to the heat, more people may show up during the summer if they can pay for just a morning session.

Scott,
I did a track day and two Monday practice days since I decided to buy and learn how to ride SB's.
The track day was in July 2008 and I only lasted until 2 P.M. due to the excessive heat. Being a beginner I received instructions
as to the basic track rules, bike prep etc. and was let loose on the track.
The Monday practice days seemed to be the better learning experience since I could ride as long or as little  as I
felt comfortable with. Being able to ask talented riders to follow you and to lead you around the track showing you the perfect lines and
giving you pointers was priceless. It really helped me start gaining more confidence in my bike's capabilities and to start pushing it a little harder.
Most people who haven't done a track day have a preconceived vision of hanging with a bunch of guys who just want to haul ass
around a race track while trying to outdo each other.
To attract new customers, the event should be marketed as a skill improvement opportunity and structured accordingly.
Once they get a comfort level and want to continue to improve their riding skills they are hooked and you have a repeat customer.

Karl,
I don’t know if I can teach a class about how to begin racing, but I have slowly figured out some of the major steps in the process.

--Go to motorcycle races to see Scott race.  Visit his pit area.  (Wife is unaware of dangerous friends.)   [evil]

--Get wildly stupid idea that you can do this too.  (Wife is well aware of my history of impulsive, dangerous and stupid ideas, but unaware of the latest decision.)

--Consult with Scott and Stu.  Now, multiply the wild idea by a factor of three.    ;D

--"Accidently” buy several motorcycles that fit the race class you have blindly chosen.  (Wife is now aware of idea and unhappy!)

--Sell the motorcycles that seem unlikely to win any races.   (Wife is happy!)   :-*

--Spend goverment deficit scale of money and black hole quantities of time building, riding and developing the one bike that was kept.  (Wife steadily moves into the unhappy zone!)

--Ride the race bike like your tail is on fire at every opportunity.  Bike parts regularly break and get modified, the neighbors hate you, the police are looking for you, the track mgmt. sees you often and loves your money and….hopefully, you get better….  (Wife is totally unaware that this is going on.)   [roll]

--Get a little bit better at riding on the track, get very lucky, and win some races.  (Wife now genuinely worried and wants you to quit racing while you still have some bones which are not yet broken and a few helmets that don't yet have lurid scrape marks on both sides.)   :o

--Keep working, developing, fixing broken parts, and winning.  Eventually, win the class title.   (Now, the other racers in the class are unhappy!  They are certain that you cheated.)

--Retire to a lovely, bluegrass farm in Kentucky…  Hopefully, to collect large, stud fees….   8)  (Wife discovers and vetoes this new plan…  She points out that you are not a race horse!)   [thumbsdown]

--Ed

(Note:….The comments above are intended as race humor and don’t apply to Track Days.  Track Days have all the fun of spirited riding without the blood, sweat, money and time required by racing.  I will separately post some thoughts about how to improve the Track Day and Race Day experiences.)

Warning:  This is a very long post, so if the topic is not of interest, feel free to move along.    "… these are not the Droids that you are looking for…..”  - Obi-Wan Kenobi/Star Wars.

How I became a Track Junkie":
Scott, I started my track addiction when I came to watch you race.  You made it look easy and fun.  I didn’t find out until later that racing was just a bit more complicated…..  However, my early observation leads me to believe that personal interactions with the racers are good for promoting both Track Days as well as Racing.

The Parade Lap idea expanded:
The best time to have the Parade Lap of beginners, race watchers, …etc. may be during the Race Day lunch hour.  This would not slow the racing schedule for more than 15 minutes out of the lunch time.

A Parade Lap for race watchers would contribute to their enjoyment by helping them understand what the far side of the track really looks like.  Sandia has a very poor location for its grandstands.  It is very hard to see what is happening on the far side of the track.  I think this greatly contributes to small crowds.

On Track Days consider a “free” parade lap, or maybe 2 or 3 laps.  As others have said, this should be effective at taking away the apprehension of riding on a real race track.  After this Parade Session, offer first time riders a discounted ticket that would come with a brief track school talk.  SMRI already offers inexpensive track suit rentals.  Offer/Sell “Blue Painter’s Tape” to these riders as well.  Anything that lowers the barrier of that first decision to ride on the track, would be helpful.

Of course, the parade lap riders would get the standard “no stunting or goofing off” speech before the ride and be guided front, middle and back by “highly visible control riders” to show the race line and keep chaos at bay.

Race and Track day General Promotion:
As others have mentioned, the promotion of motorcycle racing and track days is poor.  Could SMRI afford an ad in the Motorcycles for Sale classifieds section of the paper?  How about a small ad in the Sports section of the paper?  Would the paper be willing to donate ad space?  As others have pointed out, it might help to post flyers, even simple ones, at key dealerships with high walk-in traffic.  These could be sent by mail or delivered in person.

Dealer Involvement:
Would it help to have a group of two or three Executive Committee members or other SMRI representatives make appointments and visit larger, motorcycle store owners, and sales/service mangers?  If done in the Santa Fe, Bernalillo to Belen corridor, would it generate support and ideas?  If this were done in January and February, there would be lots of time to stand around on empty show room floors and chat.

Would dealers like to bring some of their new bikes to the track and talk to prospective buyers?  Not all the bikes would need to be sport bikes.  Cruisers, adventure and sport touring bikes would also be of interest to the race watching public.  This could start as a free promotion and if popular and helpful, maybe it could generate a small fee or donation to SMRI.

Warning:  This is a second, very long post, so if the topic is not of interest, feel free to move along.   "… these are not the Droids that you are looking for…..”  - Obi-Wan Kenobi/Star Wars.

Continued.......

Ask a Track Expert:
Could SMRI erect an EZ-UP on race days and have a personable, track expert or two (male and/or female) that could answer questions about racing, track days, motorcycles….or whatever?  Put up an “Ask the Expert” sign there too.  This opportunity would be highly visible, if located just across from the entrance to the grandstands and near Tech Inspection.  It could be manned in one hour intervals during the day to avoid burn-out.  (By the way, EZ-UP is a deluxe oxymoron.  The damn things are hard put up even on a calm day.  On windy days, this is a real exciting event!)

What if the winning riders from each, just completed, race stopped their bikes at this “Ask the Expert” location.  They could pull off their sweaty helmets, take a long drink of cold milk and answer questions from the crowd for 5-10 minutes.  This could be a rolling, constantly changing, public interview of the winning riders.  It might be similar to what’s shown these days on TV.  It would be an exciting, live, in-person experience for race fans.  These fans are currently reluctant to walk around and interrupt racers working on their bikes in the far reaches of the pits.  More racer face time for the public generates more fans… ask NASCAR.

Track Day Formats:
The beginner sessions seem OK.

It appears that the expert sessions of track days are truly for experts and anyone who ventures there risks being strafed by rocketing riders.  This pushes even experienced riders into the intermediate sessions.

The intermediate sessions are crowded.  This group is populated by two kinds of riders, those moving up from the beginner sessions and those who have lots of experience, but don’t want to ride in the expert session.  This last group may not want to ride in the expert session because their track bike is older, smaller or not as highly developed as the expert bikes and therefore not as fast.

Perhaps the intermediate session could be split into two sessions that might be called “Advanced” and “Intermediate”.  This would steer newer riders to the next level above “Beginner”, which would still be called “Intermediate”.  Doing this would separate these bobbing, weaving, newer riders from being mixed in with the faster, more experienced riders who belong in a newly created, “Advanced” group.  This strategy would create four groups “Expert, Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner”.  (By the way, use what ever session names that you like which indicate the division of skill into four groups.)

Splitting the intermediate session would create one more session that would need to be added to the schedule.  But doing so would offer a much better and safer experience for a majority of riders.  Later in the Track Day, when attendance typically goes down and the groups get smaller, combine the Expert and Advanced groups or the Advanced and Intermediate groups… etc.

Hopefully this long post contains a few helpful ideas.

Ed Kist

…..Now that I have blabbed on endlessly, how about hearing from others.  There are lots of good ideas yet to be offered…..

--Ed

(Note:….The comments above are intended as racing humor and don’t apply to Track Days.  Track Days have all the fun of spirited riding without the blood, sweat, money and time required by racing.  I will separately post some thoughts about how to improve the Track Day and Race Day experiences.)

My day in pictures:

Ready to go at 7:00 AM

Keri planted herself firmly at the last corner of the track and balanced watching Michael and taking some pictures for me.

Michael did extremely well.  The only bike that even phased him was a full open pipe vintage bike.  Otherwise it was just another day in the world for him.

Yes.. That's a playpen and stroller in my pit...

I was nowhere near the beginning of the line for Teching' in... but they gave me a #1 on my tape.  No pressure.

.... And yes.. I'm bringing sexy back, and Shufflin'.. Every day.

It was great trackday and it was simply motivating!  [thumbsup] I'll start with the company- Caleb and Wayne & co were there from NMMR side...Molly came over to take some fantastic high speed manual shots! My data analyzer kept motivating me...almost killing me would be the right description...there were few control riders and corner marshals and few track fellas who had their eyes full of ice hockey! ;)

KARL -- Remember you wanted me to keep keep track of my new tire mileage...you may want to reconsider...my Pirellis at 400miles are 70% done on sides! :P

Caleb the great Scrubbed not just his pegs half way...he showed us how to change shoe styles from round style to Italian pointers...lucky to have few toes!!! Here's him on corner 7:

Wayne and wanna be racer Michael:

As of me, few pics coming soon...heres my trackday achievement...I had a goal to break the minute barrier..but I was short!  :-\ After about over 60-70 laps my last session dropped from last years best of 1'2"300 to 1'1'800 to final session best of 1'0"800. I know I have room to improve, but my tires couldn't do any better and after few crazy slides...slides where you feel both wheels were on ice sidewise...I took late braking approach...the improvement was worth it! Here's the last two times:

Videos are taking an eternity to upload, I think Comcast is throttling my connection - already uploaded about 3gigs of video to youtube tonight and uploading the last bit of video when JJ used my camera has ground to a halt. I'll see how far along the video comes by tomorrow morning, but I gotta get some sleep. Oh and JJ, I'm not great, just really loud apparently, listening to that video.  [laugh]

Don't look at my lines, they're embarrassing. That said, I'm glad I filmed it, cause it's always easier to fix yourself when you watch it after the fact. Anyone want to reserve the track some time? I'm eager already to try and shave some time off my laps, and I don't want to wait til spring.  [Dolph]

DJD, You are simply a genius! [bow_down] The pics look great and the video was awesome to follow, didn't give me a sense of lean, but following Luis after time 9:37, it was fun to watch till a heavy fish tail on Turn one exit at 12:56...was trying to catch up to slick grip! The Ducati Data Analyzer seems to have a slight delay in enabling, but the times from marker to marker are spot on! I'm so so close to a minute...Lets do this Monday thing soon, I think I know few tricks to break the 60 sec barrier! I WILL BREAK IT! [evil] [thumbsup]

DJD- Lines can always be improved, even for the best racer out there...as there is always someone who comes by one day, one year, who is super & faster! ??? The irony of racing! [thumbsup]

So, September 17, Monday. I'll inform the boss man. Who else is coming?

Chief Corner Marshall- why don't ya take a half day break? Give us some tips...?

As far as worries (marshals, ambulance,..), all I was thinking was brake markers and traction loss...I cannot seem to live the rest of this winter with 800th of a second off a minute! It is simply desperation. But, we will be careful.

Sounds like a plan. The pricing is still the same, $50 from 8 to 12 or 1 to 5 and $75 from 8 to 5. The website says motorcycles and karts on Mondays.
The weather report looks good calling for a high of 77F.

Took the day off...now need to decide morning or afternoon...?! It is 50 through morning and it is nice in the afternoon...Last track day- first session, I could not feel my toes or find the shift lever, had one false neutral through the tight hairpin. 8-9:30am is probably useless, the track would be super cold with fewer bikes to heat up! :-\

Success [thumbsup]  everyone and their bikes made it back in one piece [Dolph]
L'Scott, Adam and I made it to the track by 9:30 when Caleb and Jim were already warming up the track.
We started to shake off some rust and gained confidence in going around the track by the time JJ showed up.
We asked JJ to take us around the track and show us his lines hoping to learn from the master...what a blast.
Too bad his chain decided to jump off the rear sprocket and ended his fun prematurely..but then again we were lucky
that he didn't get hurt in the process ;)
Battled the wind and blowing sand for the rest of the day while having unspeakable fun ;D
I was pleasantly surprised to see Ed joining the gang and selfishly asked him to share his knowledge.
He lead, followed and illustrated how to navigate the course in the most efficient fashion....priceless (while kicking our ass in the process). [thumbsup]
We also met some regulars from the SMRI who volunteered their knowledge and experience.
To sum it all up...can't think of a better way to spend a Monday with my friends who are willing to make me a better rider.
BTW, I'm sore as heck...but it's a good sore [laugh]

Well, I went from about 1:07 lap times at the SMRI track day to a couple 1:04 and 1:05 lap times this track day. This is just judging from my video, I need to get a lap timer some time to be more sure of that. Lots of fun was had and I learned a lot from Ed. I got some good video, including a couple laps of different markers getting pointed out. Karl, unfortunately your video didn't record, I got a good video of your bike sitting on its kickstand, though!  [laugh] Adam's video did come out, and I got some video behind you as well.  [thumbsup]

In my little time there it was fun to follow each of you...wish I had not derailed the chain, would have loved to see Ed and check his speedy ways...& follow L'Scott few more times...he was doing awesome as well! At the same time I was real lucky that it happened close to the tight hairpin/slowest speed trap aand not the horseshoe!!! Thanks Karl for helping me load it up. It will come back stronger...! Freakin' AWESOME day!!!!!!  Great weather (well, except for the 30mph winds), lots of good laps, & no incidents other than JJ's chain...
My rear tire is toast. 2 track days, Ouray, & North Carolina have done it in. It went flat yesterday from a small nail.
My odometer shows 112.8 miles, but that includes trips from the pit to the track & back. Not sure how long the track is.
I've got lap times on my DDA, but it's PC only, so I may need to impose upon someone with a PC [roll]

Thanks to Karl for letting me crash at his place for a coupla days!
It was great fun trying to keep up with Ed!!! ;D
I also followed Charles from SMRI for a few laps. He showed me his racing lines, & shift & braking points. Good stuff!
Good seeing everyone at Farina's Sunday night, & Two Fools Monday night.

Let's do it again soon [thumbsup] [Dolph]

The 2012 track day schedule is posted on the SMRI website, and the first track day of the year is this Saturday, so come on out!

Without going into verbose detail, the CEO/President of SMS last year, Jim Guthrie, resigned his position in order to take out a two-year lease on the track.  He now operates the facility independent of SMS' board, who still own the facility but are no longer responsible for operations.  Jim sold a sponsorship of the facility to NAPA Auto Parts and has rebranded accordingly.  They've spent a bit of money repainting and straightening things at the track, and seeing to a bit of desperately needed maintenance.  If Jim's venture is profitable, I'm told he has the option to extend his lease to as long as ten years under the current contract.  I expect that if he turns a reasonable profit for those two years he might consider resurfacing the entire asphalt surface....maybe?

Last year, Sandia raised it's rental rates to SMRI, but SMRI failed to raise its prices to riders.  We lost money.  This year a track day is $100 (in lieu of last year's $75) and race fees have also been raised a bit.  SMRI have also aggressively courted class and event sponsors and have done a good job enhancing revenues via those streams.  I expect the financial health of the club will strengthen throughout the year and for years to come.  The track is anxious to keep all its current "customers", so you can rest assured that we'll be holding track days and race events at NAPA Speedway for years to come!

Blake's is gone from the track, but Jim is actively courting another entity to operate the "snack bar" to service spectators and participants.  This weekend, the track day sponsor, Santa Fe Harley Davidson, will provide lunch for all participants.  If you'd like to buy an advance ticket you'll need to buy it directly from SFHD, as they're no longer available online (a concession to an amendment to our track day sponsorship agreement).  If you want to risk coming out to the track to buy a ticket we'll sell them there for the same $100 price until we run out of slots.  I think we decided to cap the number of participants at 90 (30 per class, 3 classes).

All sounds pretty good then! I was worried new business and new sponsors might push out motorcycles. I was planning on coming to the race day this weekend, but it didn't click in my head that I was going to be gone this weekend!  [laugh] I may be able to do a track day in May since I got tax moneys, but we'll see if that money doesn't actually go towards my moving costs.
