Is it just my perception, or are we losing more celebrities this year than in years past?
It seems like every 1-2 days lately.
Just heard about Sherman Hemsley a few minutes ago.
Bad year to be famous...
??? :(
Celebs dying today that have never died before
modification of stuff my father-in-law used to say to my wife when she was little
he used to say people dying today that never died before and also pointed out to her, using the newspaper as an example, that people die in alphabetical order.
and coincidently most of these folks die of something fatal

blah blah blah, care on the road, 700watt blinkers and brake lights in conjunction with hand signals, dont ride in rain, wear padded touring gear over your leathers, 55mph electronic governor, wheelie bar, blah blah blah

I'd rather not die doing something stupid, but I'd give it all up if it means I dont spend 10 years rotting away from cancer or the like.
As for the original post...I thought it was 20..10? that had the most...what ever the Michael Jackson year was...I feel like there were a sh*t ton that year...

In my opinion, it's because we've had a celebrity population explosion: more celebrities = more of them meeting their timely ends in any given time period.
Just wait a few years until the current bumper crop starts to hit their actuarial limits. Lucky for me, I will be way past mine by then, so probably won't have to endure fawning recollections of the entire cast of Twilight or the stars of Bachelor Season 6.
To help speed along the Updates from Fed Ex I'm gonna take a nap.

My plan is to live forever one day.
maybe after speeding towards the event horizon of death, you reach it and time stops for you, allowing you to not quite reach blissful oblivion and exist instead in your own personal mental purgatory for the rest of existence. Wouldn't that be lovely. ;D

Actually, you've really only been dying since you were about 25yo, before which your body was producing cells at a rate faster than they expired, which means, for a while there, you really had a good thing going! ;)

Sad indeed to have lost so many fellow EMT's. Reading the list shows that 25% did not die while on Duty and another almost 20% died of cardiac arrest. A couple of them were volunteers in their late 70's.

which was that a LOT of people who have contributed more to our society than any actor have died in 2012.

I got your point, just don't agree with it. Many actors, writers and other "celebrity" have contributed WAY more then some of the FF's or EMT's I know and worked with. The mere fact that someone is a FF or EMT does not make them more worthy, a hero, or anything special.
If they do something outside of what they chose to do, are paid to do, that is a great contribution then maybe we start a thread.
We'll all be here someday.

fine, remove the emergency services people from the equation. And, if you feel the same about our troops serving the US, then remove them too.
the point remains.......why is the death of an entertainer more tragic/important/mourned than anyone else that day/year?
Only arguably because a lot of people live vicariously through the news of what they see famous people doing and feel a personal sense of loss when that person goes despite them never even meeting that person most likely.
It doesn't work that way for me personally, but I might just be wired different. I do see why it could be viewed that way though.
I suppose worth could be broken down to how long someone is remembered and us normal folks just aren't worth too much if that is the measurement. Famous people would be remembered for longer so are more "important".
Not saying I view things that way but just providing a viewpoint to debate.

Pretty certain, my interpretation anyway, that Alfisti wasn't saying an entertainer's passing was "more tragic..." than a FF's an EMT's or anyone from the service. Completely different categories.
Edit: and there you have it - my interpretation was indeed correct (should have read through the rest of the posts before I started blabbing):

Way back when I was young, 5 or 6 or so, I would tie my older sister Jenny to a tree with my jump rope. I would circle the tree doing Indian war whoops. Then I would reach in a tickle her every other round or two. I would call her Phyllis Diller too. This was kept up till she peed her pants. Good memories [beer]
