just sayin... :P

Sad indeed to have lost so many fellow EMT's. Reading the list shows that 25% did not die while on Duty and another almost 20% died of cardiac arrest. A couple of them were volunteers in their late 70's.

kind of missing the point...

which was that a LOT of people who have contributed more to our society than any actor have died in 2012.

I got your point, just don't agree with it. Many actors, writers and other "celebrity" have contributed WAY more then some of the FF's or EMT's I know and worked with. The mere fact that someone is a FF or EMT does not make them more worthy, a hero, or anything special.

If they do something outside of what they chose to do, are paid to do, that is a great contribution then maybe we start a thread.

fine, remove the emergency services people from the equation. And, if you feel the same about our troops serving the US, then remove them too.

the point remains.......why is the death of an entertainer more tragic/important/mourned than anyone else that day/year?

Only arguably because a lot of people live vicariously through the news of what they see famous people doing and feel a personal sense of loss when that person goes despite them never even meeting that person most likely.

It doesn't work that way for me personally, but I might just be wired different. I do see why it could be viewed that way though.

I suppose worth could be broken down to how long someone is remembered and us normal folks just aren't worth too much if that is the measurement. Famous people would be remembered for longer so are more "important".

Not saying I view things that way but just providing a viewpoint to debate.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Death seems more tragic when you know the person.  More people know think they know celebrities.
