Carlos has been posting pictures of beautiful Panama City.... which made me think we need a place to show off our home towns.
The neighbourhood, region or places where we live.
Or have lived at some time.
So..... here's Melbourne 8)

Love Melbourne! Great pic!
Here's the main street in my little Arizona mountain town, Prescott:
My house is about ten blocks to the right of the center of that photo.
And about five blocks in the other direction, you leave town like this:
White Spar run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reaEl_OQk50#)
We're surrounded on three sides by the Prescott National Forest (mostly ponderosa pine & juniper forests, depending on elevation as you'll notice changing in the video above) and by Willow & Watson lakes, which are about what you'd get if you flooded the valley floor of Joshua Tree National Park:

Speeddog they are wild birds
They are actually a pain in the ass [bang] if you feed them they come around if you don't they still come around and tear up all the timber.
I know one Lady who had $5000 worth of new timber decking destroyed by them in an afternoon [bang]

Hard on people too, I spent a lot of time there, and I was the only one who never got bit. [laugh]

Good view of Huntington Beach that shows a bit of the harbor and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. My house is near the yellow star. The wetlands have some cool history with remnants of old WWII installations (mounts for guns that fired shells over 25 miles) and an old bunker they just got rid of to build some $2M homes. We still have monthly civil defense air siren tests though I think they are for tsunami's now. There is a mile long stretch of beach south of the wetlands open to dogs off leash.

I will Defer to that. The Original Fort Bragg never reached the size & scope of the current Fort Bragg, and it's purpose was entirely different.
But it was the first, and it helped settle the area for the White Folks and helped disenfranchise the locals, which I guess was good for you and me, mostly...

One of the local roads I ride. You'd be amazed to see the difference compared to summer weather.

That looks familiar -- didn't you post a "summer" shot with your bike in just about the same spot? If so, that is quite a contrast!

Fairly positive I did. Can't find it at the moment (I only have 5 disc drives) This is a common riding area for me.

Mine is only an 8 MP
What I like about the Richo GR is that it has the same size sensor (i.e. picture quality) and features as a DSLR, but is in a modest body. So it is smaller and easier to carry and also doesn't look like something expensive someone would want to steal.

A smart theif wouldnt want mine. It has security features that will render it useless. But some Crackhead would want it in a second. And there seem to be plenty of those.
I used to have a little Nikon point & shoot but I gave it to my Dad.
Sensor size and lens make the camera. I shoot with an older DSLR body but have an excellent Tamron lens that really makes the most of the camera.

I just shoot with an iPhone now. The pictures come out pretty good but theres no Zoom or telephoto lens. One thing that is cool though is that the photos are usually on the computer by the time I get home.

A biking/walking path that cuts through the east side of town. It's reclaimed Rail Road alignment, now owned by State Parks. It's kind of nice path. The pavement goes on for several miles and there are a couple of trestles along the way. Then the pavement ends and it continues to at least the next town.
It's too bad that it doesn't connect to the west side of town, but that would require an expensive bridge or tunnel to make it over, or under the Rail Road switching yard that seems to be in the way. Someone should tell Union Pacific that they are standing in the way of progress. [cheeky]

Much of the downtown has geothermaly heated sidewalks. Many houses and buildings are heated that way as well.
It comforts me to look at the huge snow capped volcano to the south, the smaller one to the west, and ponder on the massive crater in the mountain to the north that was formed when said mountain blew its top.
I guess theres a roiling cauldron of red hot rock down there doing its thing.

It moved really slowly to a final size just shy of 6,000 acres - and I'm pretty sure the USFS re-lit it a couple of times as it was keeping within the boundaries of a fuels-management area they planned to burn anyway. Less paperwork like that. ;D

Not yet my neighborhood, but it gets closer with each weekend of work...
The main outline of the post & beam frame of the main, straw bale house at Lucky Dragons is up and we can finally see what it's going to look like against the sky - man, that North wall is tall! Guess we should be thinking of adding a loft to take advantage of it.

Once the roof is on & the inside is somewhat protected from the elements, we can start stacking bales. Lots of bales.
In the meantime, here's how far we've gotten in a weekend's work on the solar equipment shed - framing & sheathing on the walls, and a couple of rafters up on the roof.

What's the cost estimate to do that project?
We're trying to do as much of the work as we can ourselves and using recycled/reclaimed/stolen materials* to keep costs down, with a budget a somewhere north of $45K, and so far in good shape to stay relatively close to that target. The big ticket items will be the timber framing (which we hired) and solar system (which we purchased). Mistakes made along the way go into the "education" item in the budget, and that one may go a bit over. ;D
*No items were stolen in the making of this straw bale house, certainly not anything anybody's going to miss...
Jeez, it's been too long. Here's my neighborhood (the nearest full-time "neighbor" is about 2 miles away), complete with a completed, final-inspected, bureaucracy-approved strawbale house that's warm and cozy, even when it's 0 outside and we don't want to bother to light the wood stove:

Indeed! Some photos of the inside please. How far from the city? Still got chickens? Sorry about all the questions :-[
Thank you! Let's see...
We're about 15 miles from the nearest gas/mini-mart, at Valle, AZ - apparently too small to be called a town, it's a "Census-designated spot." [laugh] Everything else is about an hour away - Flagstaff to the Southeast, Williams to the South, and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North. We're on 36 acres of what used to be a several-thousand acre cattle ranch. It's pretty dry, pinyon/juniper forest, with a reasonable snowfall most winters and a month or so of monsoon in the summer. We're down to three chickens, with the other three in the freezer & plans for another 8-10 chicks in the spring. Spring might also see a beehive or two, and maybe even sheep in the fall!
The place is small, probably 600 square feet, with one large room that wraps around into the kitchen, and a bathroom. Sometime this year, we'll probably be building a loft area above the bathroom & enclosing a back porch/mud room on the north side.
Pictures! Here's the NE corner of the main room - the plan is for a simple loft to extend to the beam just to the right of that painted skate deck.

This is the kitchen, under construction still a couple of months ago. The countertops are crude & temporary while I'm working on a couple of big live-edge ponderosa slabs for the back counter, and trying to figure out what would work best and look cool under the sink. I've seen some concrete counters with multi-colored glass that I kind of like, and think I might be able to make. The counter in the foreground is a long woodworking bench; we've been gradually plugging up the bench dog holes with wine corks.

When I looked into the cost of shower curtain surrounds for clawfoot tubs I was momentarily out of breath, but then realized I could build the same out of 1" copper plumbing sweated together AND buy a cheap Harbor Freight tubing roller and still come out way ahead:

The floors are flagstone we salvaged from the discards pile of a local quarry. Because some of the grouted areas are a little wide, I started putting stuff in them in a few spots - old door keys, coins from all over the world, etc. This one's my favorite:

And a few more outdoor shots, while I've got a little momentum....
Here's that north wall again, and the west wall with final plaster (about 1.5" of earthen plaster, and 1" of lime plaster for water resistance). We colored the walls with patches of copper sulfate or iron sulfate solutions, which react with the lime to make the tan & olive patches - our objective was to look kind of like the lichen-covered basalt that is all over the volcanic fields here on the Colorado Plateau. The figures above the windows serve a purpose - you want to divert water sheeting down the wall away from the windows, so we figured we might as well make them entertaining.

And another indoor shot, that shows why build with straw - this is a typical winter morning indoor vs. outdoor temperature - usually we'll light the wood stove for an hour or so when we get up, just because, but almost all of that differential is from solar gain and great insulation. And it's nice and cool in the hot Arizona summer, too...

Very cool. Great work. [clap]
Fantastic home!
We had visitors this evening...
based on their 'shape', and appetite, I'd venture saying they're carrying this spring's crop of fawns.

Beautiful.
