Yeah, I saw it 10 minutes after he posted it.  Got his number and called.  About 45 seconds into the call he asked if I own a Ducati already and I told him, "Yup, Sport Classic" and he says, "I just sold one of those.".  Took me about a millisecond to put 2 and 2 together.  Too funny.

Anyway, it'll hopefully make a great starterbike for my wife.  She's really excited!

It looks very well cared for.

Now maybe Tommy is on his way to get his 1098!   [thumbsup]

It seems to have been pretty well cared for.  Having only 2200 miles on the clock is probably one contributing factor.  [thumbsup]

Yeah, Bonnie said she figures that Tommy will have a red 1098 in the garage by the end of the year.  [laugh]

+1 on that.  I took a two-day riding class so all I had to do was take the written test; best money I spent when getting started - aside from good riding boots and a helmet of course  [laugh]

Yep, totally the way to go. Those classes are filling up like crazy so plan ahead. ( http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/classifieds/news/automotive/latestnews/stories/070108dnmetcycles.4111f15.html )

If you decide to skip the MSF class and take the DMVs riding test, I heard a rumor that there's a 2 month waiting list.

BTW, congrats on the new member to the family Jim. Way cool!  [thumbsup]

But wait a second, I don't remember Tommy having this bike. When did he get it?

did you ever have problems with the base gasket on the rear cylinder?  that was a widespread problem for this model/year....both of my '01 monsters had to have the rear cylinder pulled and redo the gasket...didn't affect the 900 but it did cause some headaches for lots of 600 and 750 owners.  my 600 had to have it done at about 12k miles, and my 750 just gave out suddenly at about 8500 miles.  on the bright side when i got it back from AMS the 750 ran even better...it just cost about $700   :-\

just something to be mindful of, if the base gasket on the rear cylinder is still original.

Double congrats to Jim and Lyndy for the purchase and Tommy and Bonnie for the sale.  These bikes are getting new homes but remaining in the family.  Cher's Monster and IPimp's SC are also part of the musical chairs of bikes.

BTW Jim, let me recommend the TCC MSF course.  The guy who runs the program is a friend of mine.  Really good guy who taught my sons.  Ask about the program and I will mention Lyndy's name to him.  You never know what he can do to accomodate her.

Which campus?

The main campus for this program is the NW campus but depending on the number of attendees and the region of Tarrant county from which they come, they may use other campuses.

Jim, if I may... I've been through a bunch of gear trying to find "girl" sizing, good construction, durability, color (no, seriously), and last but not least, good value.  Ask Lyndy to cruise over to MotoLiberty sometime before she buys any gear - they've got Fieldsheer suits (mesh and leather), and Scorpion helmets (the only helmet that fits my XS pea-brained head  [roll]  ).

I know everyone likes MotoL, but not everyone in town carries Fieldsheer or Scorpion.  Both brands are excellent values.

Just my .02

Thanks!  Yes, ML is our first choice for local shopping for gear.  Now, if only they'd stay open late enough so us working stiffs could make it over to the east-side before they close on a weeknight.  Alas, looks like we'll have to try to get over there this weekend.

Any recommendation on lightweight helmets?  We've kind of assumed and heard that Shoei and Arai are going to be the two lightest (at least, some of their lines).  But, we're open to suggestions.
Title: Re: My bike was lonely, so....
Post by: never2loud on July 03, 2008, 07:17:29 AM

I think it's first going to be a matter of what helmet brand fits her head.  I had a hell of time finding a helmet that fit.  Scorpion eventually was the one that fit best and they hvae three lines of helmets based on weight and features:  EXO400 (heaviest with great air flow but loudt; my first helemt), EXO700 (lighter ith excellent airflow, good aerodynamics and quieter, the second helmet and the one I wear most of the time), and their newst, an EXO1000 (really light with some pretty cool features that I'll prolly get eventually).  All are very competitively priced and are good values.

I know there are tons of people around here who swear by Arai and Shoei so it'll be interesting to hear from them as well.

There's also a new moto gear store up in Lewisville across from Vista Ridge mall called Grif's Cycle Sports (2406 S. Stemmons Fwy).  They also carry Fieldsheer and Scorpion.  Here's their link:

http://www.grifscycle.com

And a phone number:  (972)315-2892

They're good folks and brand new.  Not sure if they're any more convenient than ML but maybe their hours are better (they are open Sunday's 10 -4)  ???

+1

He actually measured my head and then talked me through every lid in the shop asking how it felt in various places and how the oval felt about my face and chin. It was very informative. In the end, the Scorpion 700s won for price, weight and comfort.

Yeah, I'm an Arai fan but Lisa is right. Fit first. That's probably the most important thing. If you don't even notice that you are wearing it while you ride then you know you have a good one. Price, color/design, etc. should be secondary comsiderations.

ps   Congrats on the new scooter! Glad it's staying in the family. [thumbsup]

Yeah, it kinda makes me feel funny... kinda "twitchy"... like I need to pull off something stock and put on something aftermarket.

Speaking of aftermarket, does anyone have any "goodies" laying around unused they might be looking to sell for this project?  In the market for just about anything "cool".  Mirrors, grips, seats, lighting, sliders, covers, rearsets, bars, clipons, doo-dads of any sort that will help to personalize her bike.  It's a 2001 M600.  If so, shoot me or her (ThelmaLou) a PM.  [thumbsup]

Thanks for your unbiased opinion!  ;D

We got the parts back from the painter on Wednesday.  Now we're working on decals, then back for final clear coating.  Hopefully will be ready for an "unveiling" soon.  We may need some "mod assistance" from others who have "gone before" on some of this stuff.

For instance, we'd like to raise the ride height, maybe swap the handlebars, do a tail chop, change the grips, etc.  Once we get all the bits and pieces in hand, we may put a call out for a mod-day type help from the gang club.

SWEEEEEET paint job!!!   WHO DID IT??

Thanks to a recommendation from an "anonymous source"  [roll], I used:

"Scotty" of
Clark Brothers Paint & Body
Address:   2260 W Pioneer Pkwy # A, Pantego, TX 76013
Phone: (817) 860-0183

Until we get the decals and final clear coat finished up, you'll have to take my word for it - his work looks great!!

Jim, I've done the tail chop, grips and handle bars/clip-ons mods.  Love to help; let me know  ;D

Do you have the adjustable "dog bone" link/suspension piece on the swing arm?

Depending on where you want to buy the paint from...

Ducati 848 owner's manual says:
Pearl white, code 490019 (PPG) [base color]
Transparent, code 228.880 (PPG) [top clear coat]

ColorRite says:
http://www.colorrite.com/product/ducati-pearl-white-2103.cfm
Color Rite Base 1606
ColorRite Top 7606

I'm not sure if it does.  I'm not sure what it would look like?  Here's the only pic I have handy of that area of the bike.  Is this what you're talking about?

You can get some added height from the spring/shock, if you end up adjusting the preload to a ridiculous point, you may end up needing a new spring.

and of course, the front can go down instead too..

No riding of the SC until she's got a few more miles of saddle time on her M600.  20 miles on an M600 does not really give me the warm IZ_ for handing over the SC with 14/38 sprockets.  :-\  True, it's no superbike, but it's definitely got a little more kick than the '02 M600.  [moto]

Knowing Lyndy, she'll be putting the M600 on craigslist and shopping for something faster before the shiny white paint job finishes drying.  [cheeky]

Eff-YEAH!!!

What color frame?? ...?

That thing is going to be AWESOME!!!

Who know you had taste AND style! ...?

Or was this all the missuses idea?   [cheeky]

We worked up the designs together (stripes).  We quickly settled on the color scheme from the get-go (white/red/green).  She chose the decals.  I highly encouraged her (read: twisted arm) to use black Ducati text with the Red logo on both sides of the tank.  (not real apparent in the pics since the decals are still covered with white paper).

We missed the painter today, so more delays on getting the bike back on the road.   :(

This thread is starting to sound like the conversation I had with Stephanie and Lisa about matching pants, shirts, shoes, and belts. Yea, I know, I escaped as quickly as possible.  :P

Haha!  But were we right or not, Mr. Smarty Pants; how much yellow do you see on this bike, eh?   That would be NONE [laugh]

Lyndy and Jim, this has got to be one of the coolest Ducs yet!  I agree with Bryant, once it's all back together, submit some pix for BoM .  It looks like it is going to be one awesome Monster  [thumbsup]
