Poor wittle tyke!!!

I know I can't run the Monster much in the winter here but no tornados, no mosquitoes, skiing!!, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, coyote hunting, enjoying my warm house heated with the wood I cut and split during the summer, eating the food we canned, froze and dehydrated, drinking the hard cider I brewed from our trees.  I love winter - If I could afford it, I'd go to Portillo, Chile for the month of August to ski and get out of the heat and humidity.

Plus - the cold weather runs out the riffraff!

I'm with you Warren. If I could ride my bikes in the winter I wouldn't mind it at all.
Also I was thinking of how the cold weather (snow) makes everything look so beautiful.
Heat does not bring any beauty with it. It just dries stuff up and makes it look worse.
Plus I seem to be getting worse at handling heat/humidity as I get older.
How the makethebeastwithtwobacks do old people move south into that hellfire?  8)

I remember doing some work in Hobbs,NM, which is a dusty oil town in SW New Mexico.  One morning I woke up to 6" of snow there.  It was beautiful for a couple of hours.
Did you see that dirt bike thread I put on the general forum?  It was a conversion kit for attaching a track system to dirt bikes.  Pretty cool idea.

3 - 5 months of it here.

I like it too but the novelty can wear off.

Its been the second or third coldest winter we have had here in the half century I can remember.  Most of the snow this year went South of us.  By mid March, I am ready for open water so the kayak can go in.  This year though there is 40" of ice on the lake so that will take a bit to melt.  I've always cross country skied so that is some pretty good entertainment.  I seldom ski on trails - usually down the frozen creek behind my place, or around the farms here.  I started downhill again when I was 45 and am really enjoying it.  The hills here aren't anything like out West, but its fun.  I am actually more active in the winter than in the summer.  If you live in the city, I could see where it would get old pretty fast.

Yeah... I was mistaken. I was thinking more along the lines of the baked brown motif.

Warren, I saw your dirt bike with ski/track set-up. A friend I ride with in the summer (S4RS & Hypermotard) has a Husaberg 450 with that set-up. Gotta see if he'll let me try it.

I'd be happy if it would pull my popup ice shanty.  I might have a shot at getting a Rokon from a friend of mine that bought it as a novelty and has let it sit for the last few years.  They aren't too bad in the snow but not nearly as good as that timbertrack outfit.

As much as i love winter and the plethora of outdoor activities it brings, come February its gotten old.
That being said my friends and i have started trailoring our bikes down to north carolina (~12hr drive) and then enjoy driving  around south. In a couple of weeks we're gonna drive from Raleigh  down to the florida keys, can't wait.

We are going to have a lot of road  problems this spring when the 6+ feet of frost comes out of the ground. The roads are going to break up hard.

I do agree that snow makes for a beautiful vista [thumbsup].  It snowed here once.

I can imagine how it would get pretty tiresome after months of it though.

Pretty to look at... a pain to live with.

Just found this on advrider

August 15
Moved to a new home in Pennsylvania
. It's so beautiful here. The lake to the north looks so majestic. I can hardly wait to see it snow covered. I'm going to love it here. The riding is going to be the BEST. Can't wait to experience those great smells.

October 14
Pennsylvania is definitely the most beautiful place on
earth. The leaves have turned all the colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the countryside and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise, I LOVE IT HERE.

November 10
Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone
wanting to kill such a gorgeous animal, hope it will snow soon. I love it here. Those red and orange leaves have covered my yard. Looks like a magnificent multi-colored carpet. HOW BEAUTIFUL. Raking and cleaning up the yard will be an opportunity for invigorating exercise in the cool crisp air. Can't wait to follow up with a great ride through the blowing leaves and countryside.

November 15 -
Ah, more leaves and more exercise. Getting a bit cool to ride, but no worries.

November 18 -
Jesus, still more leaves. Guess it's best to wait until they've all fallen before I rake
again. Meanwhile, out and about on the 'scoot.

November 25 -
Finally, all of the trees lost their leaves and today's final raking it's over
for this season. Chiropractor suggested I use a lawn maintenance service next year. Only four blisters became infected. Should probably remember to use gloves.

November 30
-What the f --k? Where did all of those leaves come from? A little wind last night and the lawn is covered again. Oh well, they'll just have to wait until spring. May only have a few days to ride.

January 14 -
It snowed last night, FINALLY. Woke up to find everything blanketed in white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the
driveway. Had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by and we had to shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Time to put some more chrome on the bike, and enjoy a hot toddy.I Love Pennsylvania

January 17 -
More snow last night, I love it. The snowplow did his trick to the driveway again. Ahhh, a roaring fire, and a hot toddy.
I Love it here.

January 22 -
More snow again last night. Can't get out of the driveway to get to work. I'm exhausted from shoveling. F---ing snowplow.

January 29 -
More of that white sh-t fell again last night. A s if dealing with the leaves weren't bad enough, now I've got blisters all over my hands from shoveling, must remember to
wear gloves. I think the snowplow hides around the corner and waits until I'm finished
shoveling the driveway. The a--hole.

February 2 -
More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands on that son-of-a-pregnant dog who drives the snowplow. I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the
roads to melt the f---ing ice.

February 11 -
More white sh-t last night. Have been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that asshole plow goes through every time. F---ing gloves got wet and then froze on my hands. Doctor said it was just a mild case of frostbite, disfiguration is probably only temporary. Can't go anywhere, car is stuck in a mountain
of white sh-t. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the sh-t tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?

February 13 -
The f---ing weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of that white sh-t. A t this rate it won't melt 'till summer. The plow got stuck up the road and the bastard came to the door and asked to borrow a shovel. After I told him I'd already broken six of them shoveling all the sh-t he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one on his f---ing
head.

February 14-
Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on the way back I hit a damned deer that ran in front of my car. Did about $3000 damage f---ing
beast should be killed. Wish the hunters had killed them all last November.

May 3 -
Took the car to the garage in town. The f---ing thing is rusting out from all the f---ing salt they put all over the f---ing roads.

May 10 -
Moved to The Villages in Florida . I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that God-forsaken state of Pennsylvania

Enjoy the snow!!!

December 8 - 6:00 PM
It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat  for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.
I love snow!

December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!
Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.
What a perfect life!

December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.
Such a disappointment!
My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again
I don't think that's possible.
Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.
The temperature dropped to -20.
The cold makes everything sparkle so.
The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15
20 inches forecast.
Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.
I think that's silly.
We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16
Ice storm this morning.
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.
Hurt like hell.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17
Still way below freezing.
Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right.
I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
More shoveling!
Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.
I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.
Might have another shipment in March.
I think they're lying.
Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.
I think he's lying.

December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white   shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.
By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy.  I think the asshole is lying.

December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today
And it warmed up to 0.
The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?
She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack.
If I ever catch the son of a pregnant dog who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25
Merry freaking Christmas!
20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in.
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil.
God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.
The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she's an idiot.
If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26
Still snowed in.
Why the hell did I ever move here?
It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28
Warmed up to above -20.
Still snowed in.
The pregnant dog is driving me crazy!!!

December 29
10 more inches.
Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.
That's the silliest thing I ever heard.   How dumb does he think I am?

December 30
Roof caved in.
I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.
The wife went home to her mother.
Nine more inches predicted.

December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house.
No more shoveling.

January 8
Feel so good.
I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

Just got back from 4 hours of night skiing at our little local hill.  5 school buses full of kids sitting on their asses in the middle of the runs with their snowboards.  I like carving a big curve right behind them and try to get the snow down the backs of their necks.  Great conditions tonight but now its supposed to warm up and we'll have wet and mud for two months.  March and April are the months I don't like until the creeks open up so I can get the kayak in.  I really like deep winter but the transition to spring is sort of miserable here - too wet to ski, too much ice to paddle and too much sand and gravel in the intersections to ride.

[laugh] I hate the cold.

A couple years ago, the county snowplow tried to be nice and wing out the end of my driveway.  He managed to clip off my phone box in the process - no good deed goes unpunished.

About 4 inches dumped on us last night while wife and I were out with friends. All I know is this winter can make the beast with two backs off.

Side note. Im a champ at driving in the snow. Maybe I should take my talents to a rally course.

We really haven't had a pile of snow here this winter.  Most of it has went South of us. Just pretty cold.  It was -3 this morning.  We are at 6+ feet of frost in the ground so far this year.  Starting to get concerned about my septic system freezing up.  The longer period of sunlight and the higher sun angle is keeping the house warmer though.  Heading out skiing tomorrow.  Gotta get my turns in before the hills close for the season. I'm hoping the ice fishing picks up for late ice.  There is over 3 feet of ice on the lake so that will take a while to thaw.  We'll be ice fishing til April.

On living where it's cold........

Front door is drifted in again after last bilzzard.

$500/month +/- utility bills.

While my friends in warmer climates are getting cool sports cars, I can't.  Instead, I need to buy two sets of tires for every vehicle - all of which have at least AWD, cracked widshields, and make ungodly noises when starting up in subzero temps.  Truck windows won't go down or, worse yet, will go down but not back up.

Garage is a mess of muddy slush.

Gotta plan travel well in advance - can't just jump in the car and go.  At least, gotta clear off snow, scrape windshield, and warm up engine.  While working at a site, vehicles always are running with heaters going full blast - can't be good for 'em.

Need a plow or snowblower in addition to a lawnmower.

On the bright side, despite all the inconvenience and loss of disposable income, there is little in life quite as satisfying as the splat of a well-aimed snowball hitting an unsuspecting victim.

Beautiful, sunny -11 this morning.  Wife and I are headed out skiing in a bit.  I guess later in the week it actually might get up to about normal for this time of year. Somewhere around freezing.

If you live in these climates, you need to find things you like to do in it.  I would imagine living in an urban area would limit your options for winter fun.  Great outdoor gear helps a lot.  There is no inclement weather, only inadequate equipment!

All this negativity about something out of our control??!!  Of course I'll be crabby when everything turns to mud here in a few weeks.

It's going to be 77 degrees here later this week.  We topped 80 last week.

make the beast with two backs the snow.  I spent too many months (take this to mean more than a single day) at Fort Drum in the winter.  As I was leaving (in December) I rejoiced that my timing was excellent as the light turned red... and I slid directly through the intersection at the same speed at which I attempted to stop 200 feet before the limit line: 25 mph.

If I ever forget how much I hate snow, I can go visit it.

I've been enjoying this thread. (welcome to my world  ;))
Most memorable experience this winter.
This winter has been warm really warm. (I saw someone  [Dolph] a month ago  :o)
However, two hitches ago (I work week on / week off on an offshore oil platform) at 4:10 in the morning the SGLC (1,000 hp gas compressor) shut down on high discharge temp.
So much for a leisurely hot shower and breakfast, on with the coveralls.......hi ho hi ho, it's off to.....
This was not a warm day, oh no this was a seasonable day for Alaska in late January, 15* and a 20 mph wind out of the north.
The fin fan (10' sq radiator) bearings we intended to change during the next planned shutdown had failed.
Did I mention that said fin fan is on the north edge of the platform (you can look over the side and watch the ice float by) with nothing to break the north wind, in fact it acts like a venturi.
There are about a gazillion bolts (nicely rusted from the salt water) holding the shroud / guard on. Undo two, go place gloves on Modine heater diffuser, stand in front of same heater with hands held out until feeling returns, go back out for two more, rinse and repeat.
The foreman did come up and check on progress for about 30 seconds, unlike the seal oil pump failure when he bird-dogged us for 12 hours. (of course that was inside)

Like someone told me years ago "It builds character" which really means "it really sucks", but the next beer does taste better because you know deep down that you earned it.

Much respect sno duc. Many people don't know what "hard and dangerous" work is.
It's like repeatedly hitting yourself in the head with a board, it feels really good when you stop.
But the beer tastes very good after.

The 'season', as it is starts when the days get above freezing regularly and the nights drop below freezing...regularly.

My thinking is as long as we get those conditions the six weeks can start whenever...no?

Things seem to be working fine.  I had to buy some more wood, but it's still way cheaper than fuel oil.  I replaced my conventional wood boiler with a wood gassification system about 7 or 8 years ago.  Its pretty efficient.  I built a 1000 gallon water tank that holds the excess heat when the house doesn't call for it.  That is really nice on the warmer days that still need a bit of heat to keep the fuel oil furnace from kicking in.  I can just open the valve to the heat exchanger from the tank and have 160 degree water running through the pipes.  I can burn once or twice a day and keep the temp up in the tank pretty well on days like that. If I had  the cash, I'd like to get a 6 horse steam engine and use the condensing waste energy to heat that 1000 gallon tank too.    That steam engine has 250K BTU's of waste heat available from condensing the steam in a closed system.  The engine could be used for power generation, running a power forging hammer and many other interesting projects.  If you use a closed system with a condenser for the exhaust steam, you increase the power by about 30% due to the vacuum produced when the steam turns back into water on the exhaust side.

I like your thinking.
Waste heat recovery is the way to go.
Instead of a recip steam engine why not a turbine.
Are you familiar with micro-turbines, we just (6 weeks ago) installed a 1 megawatt unit (which is actually 5 200 kw turbines side by side in one housing) on our platform. make the beast with two backsing thing is better than 30% efficient, which for a small turbine is incredible. (a Solar Saturn 1,000 hp turbine is like 21 maybe 22%)
Given the advances in small turbochargers, should be able to borrow a wheel and housing.  ;)

I've always been warned away from small steam turbines, but technology keeps changing.  I think I like the simplicity of the reciprocating type and their massive startup torque.  There are so many things you can do with that waste heat.  The Rankine heat recovery motors are getting some use in the oil patch too for generating electricity from all the waste heat.

This has been the 2nd longest winter of my life.  Not being able to ski has made this winter a freaking ordeal only exceeded by the one I spent in Antarctica. [shot]

Skiing definitely makes winter a lot more bearable for me.  I usually take a week in Montana but I couldn't afford it this year so I had to make due with the molehills around here. I wanted to ski this weekend, but it got warm and mushy.  55F today so we really lost a lot of snow.   Antarctica must have been interesting.  A guy I used to work with was a Navy Seal in Vietnam.  They sent him and some others there for deprogramming for 6 months.  Interesting guy to talk to.

I wondered what the deal was up in Buffalo. I bought some steel pipe from a distributor who is supplied from the Niagara service center. Was supposed to get the stuff in Friday but he said NSC is closed tomorrow so I won't have it till tuesday. I figured you guys were getting pounded.

The maple syrup industry is worth almost 4 mil a year in NH with about 125,000 gallons produced.

NH syrup commands the highest prices of all the northeast states.

It comes out of trees...and you 'just' boil it and enjoy.  ;D

You need cold, but you need a 'season' of cold nights and warm days.

The days, as they get warmer, causes budding and the sap flow stops.

The actual temps will dictate the grade/color of the finished syrup.

It's pretty scientific for a bunch of farmers. ;D

Are there sugar maples big enough to tap in the area?

edit...

found this...
While this guide focuses on maple trees, other types of trees can be tapped. For example, Birch and Walnut trees can be tapped and will yield a sweet sap. These trees are not generally used in commercial production of syrup because the sugar content is lower, which would result in higher expenses. Alaska, where maple trees do not grow, has a thriving Birch sap industry.

The lower sugar content just means you need more sap to make syrup.

Not a guarantee of winter stress relief. They're a make the beast with two backsing hoot when all is well, but.....

Had a 2010 Polaris 800 RMK myself until last fall, when a preventive maintenance compression check showed that my engine was down 10 PSI in one hole. Since most of my riding buddies had sold theirs, and no compelling desire to stick a grand into a top end overhaul, it went down the road.

Naturally, we got a shitload of snow with no sled to ride.  :P  [bang]  :P  [bang]

I'm not sure... it's like they move around to different spots.

This is the time of year they move around a lot looking for a mate. Soon more and more little potholes will be seen out trying to cross the road, drive with caution.

It snowed at my house 1" of really wet snow.

The smoke this morning was so thick, you couldn't see more than a 1/4 mile. (yes, I have both a full face and half mask snoot-boot with MSA super filters installed)
We need rain.

That sucks. Is your residence in any danger?

Honestly, its not entirely just arbitrary pregnant doging about the cold. Its that I can't ride when its low 40's or less. Riding motorcycles is why I'm not on anti depressants.

This long winter and the stresses of keeping the shop going were rough. I was having some trouble.

Wednesday, it came with 3 miles of us to the south.
Last night it was 2.5 miles to the east.
Both times I was expecting to see flames.
Both times the difference was very aggressive air support, helicopter and slurry bomber.

there's a switch to stop that from happening ya know. ;)

The funny thing is, the switch is wired directly to the mouths of the three women that live in the house with me.

Switch is off, mouths are moving.  Switch is on, mouths are not moving?

I've looked for the wiring, I can't find it.  Must be wireless.
