Welllll, the changes I described in the last page got the best of me... increased job responsibilities coupled with the school's constant schedule shuffling led to me cancelling my MT membership yesterday.  It is a very disappointing end to almost five and a half years at this school.  This place had been a big part of who I was for quite a while.

Odd that I'm talking about it like I'm already done there when I have another month and a half worth of classes to burn through before I'm all-the-way done... right now, my motivation to attend is pretty thin.  maybe a little depression?  I dunno...

Anyway, I've shopped a couple of the other area schools to check out my options, but I'm not really feeling any overwhelming desire to jump from one school to the next right now.

Have any of you ever parted with a school after a lengthy period of time spent training?  How did it go for you? Did you take time off, find another school asap, shift gears, what?

Thx!

It sucked. I tried another school and it help to figure out some bad tendencies I learned from the previous one, but in general I kept comparing to the previous school. The new schools generally can't match what you became accustomed to. Now, if I would have switch to ATT from the get go, then I would have been a lot happier. Going to a world class school when you're younger is much better than when you're in bad shape and almost over the hill. No dojo can ever compare the my original Shotokan school.

I've researched it and like it..  yip chun, from the familyof yip man, has a school in nyc. Sadly, by the time im able to join we wont be in ny.  Any one here study it?

Our assistant PD Chief has belts on top of belts on top of belts, and he had a group of about five guys that he'd been teaching Wing Chun.  I went to use the PD weightroom one Sunday and stumbled into one of their classes... that turned into, "Hey, can we see if this stuff works on the Muay Thai guy?"

His students didn't fare particularly well, but they were not very experienced.  When he and I paired off to demonstrate for the students, he was very gracious about not handing me my ass.  I was fascinated by the hand techinques - especially the trapping blocks - so now I work with him on it at least once a week.  I'll doubt I'll ever get into a belt program because there isn't any actual school around here, but I'm enjoying my exposure to it.

Yea I couldnt care less about belts..  the "school" I trained in was taught by my younger friend who was a black belt.. we trained in a basement where we built a wooden platform andused the wood pillars wrapped in carpet as kicking and elbow post.. I use to shake them with elbow throws where you could feel it up stairs. Ah to be young again..  I like close in combat techniques.. usually that's what a fight ends up becoming in the streets..  strong legs can keep some one at distance if need be..  I haven't trained in almost 10 years.. its sad really..

Can't wait to try wing chun..  I just want to better my self and be able to protect those around me..

Yesterday was the first day back at the gym after my appendectomy. Of course the class was all teeps and core conditioning. To say I'm sore would be an understatement. But I can't wait to go back again tonight. :D

What do you guys think of Gujo Ryu? A gym close to my house will start to offer classes to adults and it's pretty much the only martial arts option in my area. I know it's traditional, but as I get older, it gets tougher to roll with the youngins.

Don't have any experience with it, but it sounds like a strain of traditional karate?

I got started in martial arts in Shito Ryu and eventually earned a black belt in it. Still, it did very very little for me when I got into MMA and Muay Thai. The best thing it taught me was to close distance and to kick like a mothermake the beast with two backser.

After that I did Shoto Kan for a while, and while much more intense and contact heavy, it's still more of the same.

I went into my first Mma class all cocky about my BB and proceeded to ge the ever living shit kicked out of me by one of the assistant instructors.

It was humbling to say the least.

My friend puts it best, karate is the Dane Cook of martial arts.

I'm not into martial arts anymore to be in MMA. I wouldn't be trying to put someone in a triangle on the street, but I won't be doing a kata on the street either. I would rather break a bottle over some dude's head.

Right now just looking for something that would allow me to stay in shape, but not kick the living shit out of me. I wouldn't mind a few years of the "arts" part of martial arts.

If that's your focus then for sure. It's a good way to stay in shape.

I find jiu jitsu to be the most challenging workout wise. Rolling with a blue belt or higher can be exhausting.

Amen to that, but I will always lose in the flexibility department.

Since I parted with my MT gym, I've just been looking to 1) make sure I'm still learning and 2) learn as much new stuff as possible.  I'm right there with you in the whole "I'm not working towards a competition" and the "I just need to stay alive if I'm jumped in the parking lot" category.

So, from that standpoint, I say give the Gojo Ryu a shot.  It'll just be another tool in the toolbox especially considering the background that you've already compiled.

Shifting gears...
Just did two days of Kali knife training with our asst. PD chief... wearing a white t-shirt isn't the best idea when the PD coats the trainer blades with green house paint to show strikes.  I came out looking like a paintball drive-by victim.  I hope like hell I am never attacked with an edged weapon.

Day number 4 of going to the gym after surgery. Ouch.

Sparred this morning with one of the pros that has a fight coming up. Apparently I match his opponent's height and reach. It involved getting punched in the face quite a bit. Damn, the gap in skillsets is amazing. I'm one of the better amateurs at the gym, but I can hardly survive against the pros.

Gave the dude 3 of my hardest, most crippling leg kicks (at his request) and the mothermake the beast with two backser didn't even flinch. I'd be limping for a month if I'd taken those.
