It's really quite ridiculous...

Since I already have a BA, I'm not eligible for any federal financial aid.  No Pell Grant, nothing! 

I might be able to get *some* state aid, but that mostly goes to minorities (her words).

She told me the reason why is, that the government looks at it like I'm going backwards in education.  I have a four year degree, but since I'm pursuing a two year nursing degree, they look at is less education, even though the program is more intensive.  

So, even though I was unemployed for a few months, only working 24 hours a week @ $13.00 and hour, and I'm getting top marks in my classes, I can't get any money! 

Meanwhile, the 18 year-old pot head who lives in his parents' basement, drops half his classes so he doesn't fail them, and barely squeaks by on his basket weaving and drum circle classes, is getting (and wasting) my money. 

I'm here for a purpose.  I'm driven to succeed. Anything below a 3.5 GPA is unnacceptable, and failure is NOT an option!!!

Does anyone else think that's a make the beast with two backsed up situation, or am I the only one?

I mean, seriously!  I can barely pay for gas and insurance on my vehicle, I can't afford health insurance (and I don't work the 30 hours to qualify at my job), I can't afford to go out or even to the movies because my budget is so tight... 

Yet, in spite of all this, I'm not eligible for Student Aid to go back to school to get training for a new career where I will SAVE LIVES, and help others have a higher quality/standard of life.

I have a BA. In Art History. I paid for EMT B and I out of pocket. I paid for the OSHA Cert at the U of WA out of pocket to the tune of $8.000.00 bucks.  I would like to go back and take some science classes and will have to pay for them out of pocket too.

A second degree would not going backwards, it is investing in the future.

The Federal government sees things differently.   

I feel your pain. We're paying about $12k out of pocket for Mother to finish up his paramedic certification cause the damn school won't get federally accredited. They can't even give us a definitive cost or end date.

That really sucks. It should apply the same way it does for the military with TA or even the GI Bill. If you get below a certain GPA in a class, not only do you not get credit but you have to pay back the TA or the GI Bill. Incentive to pass if I've ever heard one...
