'06 S2R 1000 vs '07 S2R 800

Here are my options- Option A) 2006 S2R 1000 w/ 10600 miles, asking $6000. KBB shows the retail value for that bike is actually $6175. Option B) 2007 S2R 800 w/ 2,631 miles, asking $7,300. KBB retail value $5,885. Niether bike has any extreme mods.

My head is telling me go with the '06 S2R 1000.

What do you guys think?

All things equal the S2R1K would be worth a tick more imo than the S2R800.

The only reason to go with the 800, if it was cheaper, is if you were going to replace the suspension anyway and if there
was enough tug in the 800.
Get the low down on service and any question plan on belts.

1000.  I had the 800 and it was a ball of fun but outgrew the thing in months.
Can we thin the gene pool?

For the prices shown it is a no brainer get the 1000.  I would be more scared of that s2r800 that hasn't been ridden then the 1000 that has.  The 800 is barely broken in and probably been sitting a lot.

As an '06 S2R 800 owner, I'd say go with the 1000

For me, the 800 is plenty powerful, but as the saying goes, too much power is just about right.

I have upgraded the suspension on my 800, at considerable cost.  The 1000 will have better bits to begin with. 

Honestly, the mileage goes in the 1000's favor.  These are motorcycles, they are meant to be ridden.  A bike with extremely low miles (like the 800 you're looking at) has been sitting, which isn't the best thing for a bike.  The 1000 has low-ish miles for its age, but in this case I think its a better bet than the 800.

If I was in your place, I'd go for the 1000

is this your first bike? if so, I'd go 800, depending on condition. But that guy is crazy out of line with his pricing...
I paid $7200 for mine used 5 years ago with the exact same mileage.

also keep in mind that at 12,000 miles, that 1000 is going to need a substantial service. if possible, try and knock him down about $600 bucks to make up for it.

they are both great bikes, the 800 is a lot of fun for me. you can ride that sucker wide-open all day and never get in too much trouble.

i had essentially the same choice you did when I bought my 800. both bikes were gorgeous, well-maintained machines. i went with the 800 because it was my first bike and I felt that a liter-bike, whether an L-twin or not, was not a good choice for a first time rider. 5 years later, I'm still running strong on that 800 and loving every minute of it.

I'm with the 1000 crowd on this one.  I had an S2R800 and LOVED it!  But by the time I sold it, it had a complete S2R1000 front end, S2R1000 master cylinders, and a S4R1000s rear shock.

maybe so, still seems awful steep to me. i guess maybe there aren't many on the market or something. like i said, i paid the same price this guy is asking, but 5 years ago, for a bike with the same mileage. Now i know mileage is what really matters here, but 5 years ago, the bike was practically new, and the economy was in much better shape.

If you go with the 800 and put on some miles, you'd be wishing you had choosen the 1000.  Comparing the 2 options you have, the 1000 is cheaper and you get more goodies.  Plus you get more power and torque.  Seems like a no brainer to me. 

Only downside - you will have to clean those white wheels all the time to keep them looking good.

I just got 2007 s2R1000 in the 7K range.  3400 miles.  Im perfectly happy with it. Just put 600 miles on it in a week.
So much so I'm selling my 1198S.

I had a sport1000s. For a year and put 12,000 miles on it as a daily driver in the city.
And a triumph thrust on for a year that I also put 12,000 miles on it as a city daily driver.

The 800 is ridiculously overpriced. I sold mine for 5k in absolutely perfect beautiful shape. With a newish gas tank & Michelins to boot. The guy got himself a fair deal. Mine had almost 14k and had a DP ECU & airbox and a freeflow exhaust that had been ceramic coated plus other misc goodies. Cosmetically it looked brand new.

For some reason I'm seeing people with S2R800s and they all want a torso for theirs. Screw that! The 800 is a great bike and lots of fun, but it won't do 2nd gear power wheelies. And let's be honest. Everybody says 'oh hey get the 1k it's soooo much better cuz it's got adjustable forks'. Well the stock valving is crap so you will end up shipping them off to get redone anyway. Rear shock is the same for both bikes.

But you can do power wheelies in 2nd with a 1k, and it's cheaper than the 800. That's the most important detail. It's cheaper. Slightly better, yet cheaper in your case. Dry clutch too if you care deeply about that.

You need to check the condition of the gas tank. The mileage difference is of no consequence(prior maintenance being equal). It's the fuel tank you want to be sure of. They are not cheap and if it's screwed you need to be sure you can get a warranty replacement.

Ok thanks for the thoughts guys. One of them will be my first bike. I have rode dirt bikes in the past and I've completed the MSF course a few weeks ago. I am a very level headed guy and I personally think that I would be able to handle the s2r1k. So that is the bike I will buy.
