i was bored and decided to see what kind of prices the ebays and craigslist had for cars i wish i could afford (wrx and mitsubishi evo)

one of the listings said "highly desireable auto trans!"

WTF! why would you buy something that sporty as an automatic. amuptees and injuries geta pass, but if you know what you are buying and are normally able bodied, why would you do that?!  [bang]

New autos are quite good.

If I were to buy an FR-S as a toy, I'd get the auto.  The manual is a great gearbox, but the auto shifts sooooooooo much quicker than I possibly could.  Plus it has the paddle shifters if you really think you're quicker than the computer.  (two hands on the wheel allows much more control, anyway).

Had some fun in my 280Z today.  I'm a fan of manual transmissions.

i have. it's still not the same. even lethe's gti, which was a blast and a half, wasn't quite right without the clutch and maual gearbox (though that is the best flappy paddle gearbox/auto-stick i have ever driven)
If it had been just fine that too would have been stick but with the tranny it had, it actually would've smoked a manual in a race.
To tell the truth I would've gotten my TDI with the DSG, but with the mileage I do, I went with the stick due to lower overall maintenance costs. I regret it sometimes when in traffic or when it would be convenient for me for us to trade cars for the day for some reason but she can't drive stick, it is fun on a good twisty though and I found in the test drive that the stick mates up nicer with the diesel, the DSG I drove seemed to get confused at times.
Need to get you up here one weekend and take you for a drive in her Audi, the 8 speed auto in it is smoooooth.

I quite like the clutch-pedal-less, electro-magnetic(?) dual-clutch auto-manual* in my Belgian TDI Mondeo.

It drives like a manual (espcially in "sport" mode), but without the 3rd pedal.  If you slightly lift on the throttle in anticipation of another gear selection, it feels and behaves exactly like a manual.

* I clearly have a grasp on this technology, eh?  [laugh]

It's not technology, it's magic! Black magic in the case of transmissions!

*I actually know how they work.  [cheeky]

Valve bodies give me a headache.

How is it?

It's kinda neat to see how they are stuffing so much stuff in these days.
For example, I'm amazed at how much they compacted the engine in my wife's car. The block looks to be only a little over a foot long and the head is actually longer than it.
