Just stop for a few days. you take a beating and you keep beating your self and your going to get hurt. something stupid like a stubbed toe and you cant kick for a feel days.

today i worked out my legs like a beast. I must of fallen to the floor atleast three times after getting the weight off on the hack squat, ATG squat, and the hamstring curls for sure. Tomorrow is 1:30 on the bag. Now i wish i was working with someone to tell me if my technique is sucking or not. i think i might break out the video camera and video tape my heavy bag sessions...

Nice! Did you end up taking video?

Tonight was BRUTAL. Ended up throwing up at the end. All sparring, boxing only. Really drives home how much my stand up relies on kicks. Gotta work on that. Lol

I started last night after some hellish days at work. The boss is on vacation, so I've been leaving on time. It's definitely the "art" part of martial art, but most importantly, it gets me sweating with some contact thrown in. We did some light sparring and other than controlling the urge to do a double leg into grown-n-pound, it was ok. They realized that they might not want me sparring against lower belts.

I joined a kickboxing gym here and Ive been sparring a lot lately.

the guys here are taller and have better reach than me. Its been very difficult for me to get on the inside without eating shots and then pretty much being super aggressive on the inside which is something im not used to because im a very slow calm fighter.

Im not a big fan of taking a ton of shots to get on the inside. Ive been doing good with some of the guys who dont know how to block kicks very well and ill just abuse their one leg and throw a few punches, but for those who know how to block the kicks, theyve effectively stopped me in the ring. I cant come in with anything and im just getting handled.

Ive been trying to throw the jab, step into the punch and change to lefty to finish a combo and then retreat to a right stance. works pretty well for me since i can very quickly close the distance and i dont mind fighting either stance, but some of the guys catch me doing this and as i transition in the step i get kicked and lose my balance. so its a 50/50 dependign on who im sparring against.

back at my old gym, lots of people my size to spar with. out here...everyone and their mother is taller than me!

any tips? im 5'6" with 66" arm span. Pretty much anyone can outreach me.

Welcome to my world. ;)
I.m 5'8" with short arms, good for bench press , but bad for boxing.
For me, it was about drawing the kind of counterpunch/kick to slip or weave or block to step in with the real attack. What kind of fake attack can tempt that tall opponent to try and tee off on you, but then you use it to get inside. Draw, defend coming in, then attack. Its really just an attack, and you gotta control the distance.
Its risky and you gotta land big shots or get kneed in the face.
Its great to be in the range for a full swing at full power and their long arms are just too cramped to hurt you (well hurt you too much).

Its light sparring nowdays. Too old and too injured!

What koko said. Unfortunately being short means that you either have to be hyper aggresive to get to the inside or play the counter game. Either way will suck.

+1. Work on your footwork. Look at Frankie Edgar. Dude has awesome footwork

Ive been watchign a ton of you tube vids on short fighters, especially zambidis!

I hurt my right ankle and im not going to kick with it for a while so that leaves me with a lot more crosses and left kicks than normal. which really means i need to get inside more. Man this is going to suck!

watch old clips of Tyson (pre-buster douglas) to see great technique a short fighter trying to fight inside. Tyson was actually a great defensive fighter at one time, contrary to popular belief.

too many short guys think you have to eat punches to get inside and do so because their perception of getting inside is straight ahead.

A better tactic for shorter fighters to close the range is to move more in a Kali fashion, using triangle type footwork to get side to side, around the long reach and utilize the hooks more. Combined with good defensive movement, this eventually helps open up the inside where uppercuts and more hooks can be utilized.

if what I'm saying doesn't seem to make sense, utube some of the old Tyson clips, he really was the master of close range boxing in his early years.

+1. Tyson would often be on the angle as he slipped/weaved in, not dead straight on. Watch for subtle shoulder feints and the like to draw the attack or defensive move. It's really impressive, however this was with his old coaches influence .The footwork and defensive skills are very precise and the preparatory moves for the big hits. People just saw the big hits, but not what preceded them (that goes for the opponemts too). Speedy footwork is essential.

Thanks for your post, you're making me remember stuff.

you hit the key word with "footwork".

In almost any power type sport, (ie. fighting, football, soccer, ect) footwork is everything. If you don't have great feet, it's almost impossible to become a great power athlete.

Yep. I do my best at acting tough, but sometimes you just have to sit in a corner and wish for body parts to be amputated.
