"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I know it takes a special tool for which one of my wholesale customers that specializes in VW's has it and has done it a few times...

OK, since this is Car Talk, I have a question. My girl has a 2013 Jeep Patriot (2.4l, CVT, 4x4) with 9000 miles that has either a gas cap light or the CEL (or both at times) that continues to come on. Taking into the local dealer, they have said "oh, you must not have put the gas cap on all the way". Well, it now has happened several times with both of us filling the tank and replacing the cap. Anyone heard of this?

Happens with my Jeep all the time. I replaced the oem cap and it has slowed down to once every 6 months or so.

First of all, I'm fairly biased as I don't believe the reliability of Jeeps to be that good.

However, have you, or the dealerships documented the repair attempts so far?

if there has not been a written repair attempt (repair order) you are likely spinning your wheels.

You need to get everything documented in order to have any type of legal recourse.

Randy, I took it in with the CEL and it was documented, so I'll just continue this route and hopefully if it continues, they'll actually do something about it. Thanks

Yesterday morning when I was walking the dog, I came across a guy who was working on his newish Ford 350 Diesel.
He thought the Cam sensor was out, and to get to it he had to remove the Hydraulic pump from underneath. I was looking at the V8 made by International and noticed that you couldn't get to hardly anything without something else being in the way.

I'm not buying stuff like that anymore....

here's another example of stupid for you
Chevy Cobalt, they want you remove the engine mount to take off the serpentine belt (insufficient room to get to the tensioner)
One of the many things dumbass me found out when I took on the task of replacing someone's alternator this past winter. Unbelievable how much had to be removed to get to the stupid thing.

Certain Lexus have the starter UNDERNEATH the dam intake manifold, requiring not only removal of the engine to service, but disassembly of half the engine.

That kind of stuff is unacceptable. If the starter is going to be internal, it needs to lats the life of the engine.

LowThudd

That's the other problem. Because it is inside the engine, it has no cooling to it and has premature failure rates as a result. Really dumb design...at least for the owner. [evil]

I always look under the hood of any car I plan to buy and make an assessment of how difficult things could be.

So far anything I've had to done on my Golf, the GTI we used to have and my wife's Audi isn't too bad to get to and seems well designed.

Its nice to come across a good design. These days everything from Airplanes, to Motorcycles, to Electronic equipment is designed in a cad program before its ever built. that gives the designers plenty of opportunity to make sure everything works well and fits before its ever built. So there is no excuse for having all kinds of stuff in your way that is hard or time consuming to remove.

Well yea, I get that there is only so much room. I had a Chrysler 300M a few years ago. The battery was buried under the washer fluid tank or something, but what they did was provide an access to it through a panel in the front wheel well. You had to remove the wheel but then it slid right out. Not super easy but not that bad either. At least they tried and put some thought behind it.

I think my favorite is the LT1 Camaro/Firebird. According to the manual you need to R&R the motor to change the rear drivers side plug. Most people ended up cutting holes in the firewall/fenderwell for access. Also, to pull the motor you first need to detatch the subframe, steering, AC and radiator from the car to lift the car off the engine and trans. lol What a cluster make the beast with two backs!
