I still have this 96 GMC Jimmy and it has the same kinds of problems. I had to remove the inner fender well to get to the plugs on the passenger side. the steering collum had to be removed to get to the last two plugs on the driver side. Don't get me started about the heater core and the dash removal..

No more GM's for me, Ive been fooling around with those my entire adult life and even most of my teen years. Ive had enough of that stuff.

NAKID

2008 VW Touareg I just got rid of had the battery under the driver's seat. Not only that but you needed a special bit to get it out. A 10mm triple star bit. AND the battery was about 85lbs...

The battery on my E320 is under the rear seat and also weighs about very heavy. However the rear seat lifts up and after removing a cover that has no fasteners, there it is.

In a previous life I was mechanic to Mrs Ung's Citroen 2CV.

According to the service manual, to remove the oil filter you must first remove the bonnet (a hood is a criminal  :P) and the R/H/S front fender assembly.  Knowing better than the French I decided all that was a little excessive and instead skun my knuckles for 40 minutes almost but not quite managing to get the filter out.

Eventually I gave up.  The front fender I discovered was held on by four (alright it may have been six, but not many is the point) bolts and the bonnet merely needed to be lifted all the way up and then slid sideways out of the channel that serves as its hinge.  About 15 minutes work all up.  And then there's the filter looking you square in the face.  Easy like  [laugh].

Thats something else. Sounds like the french had it figured out.

This is the oil filter on the E class. Same as the ML.

The plastic engine shroud just pops off.

And oil dumps all over when you pull the filter?

nope, both my VW and Audi are top mount like that and nothing more than a drop or two get on anything. It's a really nice setup.

the oil filter basically empties itself once the system has been depressurized and the oil drained . . .

So...

on start up you run for that extra couple of seconds it takes to fill the filter with no pressure...

...and that's a good thing  ???

OK, when you loosen the filter or the filter cap, then the filter/reservoir empties . . . much of its contents . . . if not mistaken this is a cartridge filter so, the reservoir where the filter is, empties because the 'vacuum' has been broken

now you got me conffussed, I this shit like the palm of my hand

When does the filter drain?

When depressurized=engine off...

or when the cartridge is loosened?

Huge difference.
