I bought one of these yesterday to keep in my life jacket (NRS CVest) and Kreiga Camelback along with my knife, multi-tool and an emergency blanket.

Description of kit:

Waterproof and re-sealable and contains 27 items that may assist in your rescue and add comfort while you wait.

Contains: Rescue Flash signal mirror, Spark-Lite Tinder-Quick waterproof fire starter, Fox 40 Howler whistle, compass, 50 ft. of heavy-duty thread, sewing needle, 4 safety pins, 2 in. x 26 in. duct tape, 10 ft. braided twine, 6 ft. stainless-steel wire, heavy-duty aluminum foil, pencil, waterproof note paper, sharp scalpel blade, 4 fish hooks, 1 snap swivel (size 12) and 2 split shot lead weights, also includes a contents list, detailed instructions and Fresnel magnifier for reading detailed instructions.

I'm adding a few meds, water purifying tablets and band-aides.

Any other must haves you all can think of to add to a minimalist survival kit?

depends on how you define "minimalist" and where you draw the line in/on limitation?

Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar kicked me out of the band..... they said I didnt fit the image they were trying to project.

Maybe some alcohol wipes, providone iodine, vet wrap, small set of surgical cut anything shears, asprin, neosporin....
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

Z, least amount of weight of space!  It will be used mostly hiking and kayaking.

What else can you think of that I can fit in the small, waterproof bag once I take out the whistle?

Here's my PFD..

REI description.. http://www.rei.com/product/832799/nrs-cvest-pfd

In the Kriega, it will be carried in my Kube pocket or US 5.

I don't expect I'll ever need to use all the items but it's obviously good to have them just in case.  My first week kayaking last year, I got a nasty cut after I accidentally kicked a rusty bolt sticking out of the dock.  Of course, I wasn't prepared for it.

Yes, a few things I forgot.  I have a ton of these items in the emergency kit out in the garage.   Thanks   [thumbsup]

Super Glue, both for repairing gear and for fixing nasty cuts.
Compass and typo map of the area would be nice. (as much as I like battery operated toys, like GPS, batteries have a way of failing at the worst possible time)
I would also add the US Airforce survial manual, in a baggie to keep it dry.

A conclusion is the place you got tired of thinking

"16 new from $15.19     6 used from $19.22"   ???

Product Dimensions: 7.4 x 1.2 x 9.7 inches and 2.2lbs.
Is there a mini version?  (shut up Bobspapa)  >:(

The kit already comes with tips for basic survival.  Plus, I keep the SAS survival handbook in the kayak's hatch when I'm on the water.

I just used superglue to hold all my finger tips together after this last move.  That cardboard really does a number on dry hands!! [thumbsup]

Have mini compass already in life jacket.

Need SoCal map!!
