I think he's trying to emphasize his perceived need for "Mother, may I?" passing.

Or he's trying to make Marquez feel guilty.
Which is about as hopeless a task as there is.

He's apologizing because he knows how hypocritical it was, in light of his full on meltdown after Marquez played rough with Lorenzo. That's the only reason. Even you know it wasn't about sportsmanship.
