The time toove out of NY is getting close..  some time after June we can leave and want to...

I've posted about this before..  Austin Texas area was top on the list... now new Hampshire is pretty much tops also..

I know they are pretty much opposite places with a few similarities..

We are looking for a free'er state..  love NHs moto live free or die..  we want enough land to make a small farm for ourselves. And good place to raise kids.

At first we limited ourselves to warmer climates (the wife)..  doing more research has changed that..

I forget who here was from up there...

what say you wise DMFers?

Your riding season would be unbearably short further North (at least to me).

But if you can deal with that...enjoy.

I'd go South.

If you are into music, Austin has a pretty amazing music scene. Cost of living seems Texas would be the clear winner. And I don't really do snow.

I went to school in Austin back in the 90s, and though the town has changed / grown a lot since then, every time I go back I feel at home still. It's a great city. Austin proper isn't cheap anymore, but the surrounding burbs aren't too expensive.

No first hand experience in NH.
But I'm from Texas.
Austin is near home and it is a great town. The Texas hill country has plenty to offer to the outdoor enthusiast as do the roads to the motor heads.
Land is cheap (relative to other parts of the nation) and so is housing.
Public education is lacking so do your research on school districts if you shop for housing in Texas.

Move to Round Rock (north of Austin) for lower taxes but as stated there's plenty of roads for some fun and there's no "winter'izing" shenanigans down here

I have experience in NH...

If you don't like shitty weather don't come here.

want 'country' don't like 'city' people don't plan on living south of Concord.

Land is getting more expensive from our point of view, but compared to NY or Cali standards it's cheap.

The way of life here is very relaxed. We don't have much in the way of amenities. If you like being able to go out to eat after 9 and want something besides McDonald's or BK...

don't come here. ;D

If you want to be able to see the stars...and have deer, turkeys, bear, and any number of other critters walk through your yard come on up.

One thing I love about dimby- getting up at 3am, stumbling out of my tent to take a leak, looking up and seeing the milky way.

Its amazing.

Explains your aim.

Oh I know all the good points of TX, Austin too...   and its still #1 on the list, mainly cause of weather...  and its tempting with living in NY our entire life's..  would be nice not to deal with snow for a while...

NH actually seems more laud back and more freedoms though..  do they bother you much about building stuff on your land?  Do you obtain water rights with land easily?

I live in rural Wisconsin, but I just spent a week at my friends 32,000 acre ranch in Wyoming.  Its a 7 mile drive to get a cellphone signal at the mailbox and another 7 to the pavement and another 40 to a town of 1200.  Its 100 miles to a McDonalds.  I am very happy there.  The stars are great at my place, no structures to my Northeast for 8 miles but out there is amazing.
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

Love it..  hope I never see another McDs again lol...

yea we are looking at other places too..  knowing the wife now wouldn't mind some seasons opens up the option s more..

Of course main issue is work..  I Cld do a lot of different jobs and I've learned most jobs in a week and would be more efficient then senior guys within a month or 2..

Been doing cable tech some networking for almost 10 years**..  and security systems for a month..

Wife does medical billing and use to be a medical assistant..

Good thing all places we're looking have lower cost of living, lower taxes and we'll be able to grow some food...

It's more structured than it used to be, especially in the southern part but if you build a shed where I am all that will happen is they collect taxes. To build my house all I needed was one $150 permit and they renew it for free. If you buy a piece with no house on it you would have to get a driveway permit from either the town or state.

In NH all flowing water and most ponds are owned by the state. There are many farm ponds that are privately owned, but the state keeps close watch due to some dam failures in the past few years. If a brook borders your land you own to the seasonal low water mark.

If you drill or dig into the ground and find water it's yours. If rain falls on your land it's yours. It's very different from western states.
