I don't have any experience with any HOA's.
What are the pro's and con's?
I read about one where they didn't want you working on your bike in your own garage!

Only pro is that they enforce the rules so that your neighbors don't end up parking an old junker in their front lawn. Con, you can't park an old junker in your front yard. People in general don't like being told what to do and of course it's majority rule, so you end up having to swallow some pretty idiotic rules, like no motorcycles allowed.

it's nowhere close to 80 miles unless you stay in South Miami.

Thanks! Not sure how long it will take to sell, but the wife has done a good job at convincing the kids that it's a good move. Less of a headache if the kids are happy about it.

Pros = Paying to tell your neighbors what they can't do on their property.
Cons = Paying to let your neighbors tell you what you can't do on your property.

I will never buy a house with an HOA.

People who like them make noise about "protecting the value of their investment."  [roll]

most of the pro/con are mentioned already, but some examples from my experience:

positives: our HOA had a pool/party room.  kept up the common areas, and repaved or slurried every couple years.  Kept all the streetlights working, curbs painted, etc. Some stipulate if properties can be only owner occupied.

negatives: someone's dog killed a spot on my lawn which I didn't notice until I got a nasty gram telling me I had 14 days to fix it or get fined.  I know others that say you can't have your garage open unless you're pulling your car in/out, dictate how many cars you can park inside the neighborhood.  Ours didn't care about motos or working on cars, but many do.  some are very expensive, ours was pretty reasonable considering it had a pool.

in our neighborhood now, I'm that guy with the bad yard (just one strip along the driveway), but all my neighbors don't care.  At least they haven't said anything to my face about it when I asked.
My fast lap is your sighting lap.

Latinbalar

your HOA does't allow bikes. Too bad you can keep your bike in my garage. Just make sure to leave the key  [evil].
I live vicariously thru myself......

At least now I get to go to the beach all the way to October.
