Thanks everyone for the replies.

So if you had the option of a Ducati 1098 or a MV Agusta 1078 - 312 which one would you buy??

Bret

If the money wasn't the issue, I would buy a Black 1098s/1198s. If it was for a track bike, MV Agusta (selfish reasons as I already have the skins and spares)

But like I mentioned before, a brand new 1078 MV Agusta for $20k or a good low k 2nd hand bike for $16 is very hard to go past for such a good bike.
I reckon the build quality, design and finish on an MV is better than a duc but I still wind the window down in the cage to listen to the Duc next to me in the traffic.

I guess what I am really trying to say is, I don't know what I would choose...  :-\ ???

Are you feeling OK ?  ;D
Life's TOO short to go slow !

i've not ridden a 1078, but the 1000 mv always felt very aggressive / annoying / tiring to ride at slower speeds just because of the engine response.  quite different to the 750.  i didn't really enjoy riding them for that reason.

the 1098 has a midrange hole that you don't expect from a big twin, which i also found a bit annoying in that they're quite flat until you get 7,000rpm on them, at which point they really take off.  so if you get into that range at an inconvenient time you'll have the front wheel off the ground very easily.  which some will like.

the parts supply issues, even with an importer, would tend to put me off an mv.  not sure how the warranty system will work without an importer as mv allegedly never paid warranty until the parts replaced had been returned to the factory we got told.  so it took a long time to get paid, and i can't see dealers forking out the cash to back that up.  i certainly wouldn't epxect much from it if you buy a new one.  they're cheap new or second hand because no one wants them, so don't buy one to sell again any time soon.  they're also heavy for the class.

not sure what the new mv is like, but in lower speed riding compared to a bmw s1000rr for example the f4 1000 feels big and not quite finished off properly.  it is an old design too - when it was released in 1999 it was already 5 or so years old as a design and the 750 was outdated pretty quickly.

but if you like the look of it, why not buy one.  i think you'll need to get some seat time on both if possible.

Hi all,

Well I have decided to get a 1098S.  I am just trying to work out the logistics of buying one in Melbourne while living in Adelaide.. LOL.  Have sourced a very good looking specimen of a 1098S and hoping to organise more details and maybe a mechanical check before buying and jumping on a plane to collect.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

And there's  only one way to get it home.  [moto]

i'd hold off if i were you, in fact, i AM holding off, very nearly bought a 1198s corse but since the news has surfaced the 1198 replacement will have GEAR DRIVEN CAMS i'm waiting.
the 1098 will drop significantly in value once the new bike is released, the 1198 will as well, though not as much obviously being newer, bigger capacity. It's fair to say every new bike will depreciate and they will all drop but maintenance costs are the achilles heel and cam belts are not only costly but they really need to be kept on top of because if they go they take a lot of bits with them! and gear driven cams will fix most servicing issues in one hit.
If you must have a new bike now at least you've made the right choice brand wise, MV are nice, lots of billet similar to bimota, great to look at but not a great ride, the duke on the other hand has character in spades, a proper pedigree and they're built for proper bikers who ride to twisties, not coffee shops.......well, sometimes coffee shops.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply.  I am not up with the latest from Ducati so wasnt aware of the new bike / engine coming.  I was of the view that the 1098S and the 1198S might hold their price pretty well given the number of people who will want one when Rossi starts to ride the brand next year.

Bret

Certainly the brand will have increased traffic once Rossi rides the red machines and we will most certainly see a Rossi
special motorcycle 1198 Rossi (million $$$) version in 2011.
But I don't see a 1098s holding value any better because Vale-God_Rossi will be riding a Moto GP Ducati.
Now if he went to WSBK it'd be a different kettle of fish.

The RR's would sky rocket! Or at least increase slightly...

Well i thought they tried that once, the old Bevel drive system. :-\
The old rubber band sucks less power and simple :-\ [bow_down]
Got any more info or pictures?

Matty,

I suppose I was just looking for some sort of lame excuse to buy one now.. LOL.  I might just buy one and ride it... bugger it..

Bret

At least you're buying pre-loved so someone else has made the initial loss.
Once you do it you won't regret it.  [thumbsup]

yeah, the bevel set up was complex and robbed power, worked a treat though. The gear drive set up looked more like the HRC set up, read about it in amcn, the only down side is that it will also have an alloy beam style frame, not the chrome moly trellis :-\

Matty,

Hoping to be able to get a low kms 1098S for around 23,000 with a few extras.  I reckon that is a lot of bike for the money.

Bret

Mr.S2R

Still keeping the S4R though Brett?

Also to  partial thread jack you heading to the Island?

BretMorris

Will be keeping the S4R for awhile till I am confident I like the 1098S. Then I might have to go back to the one bike.....maybe...m mm

Yep I am heading over to the island but not sure what day. Are you?
