just kidding dude, that sounds unpleasant.
It's weird. It hasn't been bad enough to completely shut me down, but it's also clear that something is not right... I wish it would either put me out of commission or go away, but this halfway nonesense is really frustrating.

I tried to train yesterday and was able to wheeze through a workout, but I couldn't sustain any intensity... it was like I was just going through the motions.  I think not being able to go all-out has been a bigger pain in the ass than any of the actual symptoms of the URI.

It's the most annoying illness I've ever had.

Instructor had to go away today and left sparring class up to us. Lets just say it got out of hand and it turned into a fun brawl with a few knockouts.

Went up against a TKD guy and he sidekick me in the bladder and i just flopped over. I did manage to get back up and finish the round, but i think i might be pissing blood tonight from how hard that kick was.

Overall very fun night, we were playing Shark Bait. 1 man vs 5 fresh bodies 40 second rounds.

Damn, a side kick in the bread basket!  We drilled to do a lunging punch in that area but I never bothered with it in sparring since I didn't think it works.

I freaking sprained my ankle when some 16 year old tried to throw me....Fawking white belts!  [bang]

I just noticed this thread, and as a martial artist myself, I thought I'd add a few cents to this discussion...hope you don't mind...

First, regarding the short-guy-trying-to-get-the-taller-guy...I'd like to suggest one of my favorite TKD attacks:  the quick front leg snap/push kick to the hip flexor.  If you can get that kick up fast enough (which you should since it is your front leg) you can push Mr. Tallguy's hip flexor and force him to double over a bit.  9 times out of 10, unless he is a real player, his chin is then exposed (and lowered) for a nice upper cut.  My only other thought, and what I try to do when fighting someone taller and with longer reach than me...is let him come at you, and avoid, avoid, avoid, until he is a bit tired...then try to move in after parrying an outside punch.

For grappling, my best experience is Kuk Sool Won...if you can find a good instructor, you will find yourself in extreme pain over and over, and learn alot in the process.  I only stayed in KSW for a year or so as my joints just couldn't take the pain (maybe people were rough on me since they knew I was bb in a different art).  But, in that year, I learned more about joint locks and chokes then I have in a lifetime elsewhere.

I, too, have always struggled with cardio.  The thing that seems to help me the most, is just to fight as often as I can.  I'm a big fan of non/ultralight-contact sparring, especially if you can find other bb's that you can trust not to accidentally hurt you.  That way, you can fight over and over and over and work on your cardio and technique without getting beat up badly every day.  But, at the end of the day, I still always feel as if I get winded too quickly.

Regarding the nads discussion...wear a cup!  I've been kicked hard enough in the junk that once I thought the cup broke.  But, the cup absorbed the blow enough for me to finish the round.  I see guys in my school lying on the ground from a nut shot from time to time...and if they aren't wearing protection, I have no sympathy for them.  I teach everyone to wear one, and if they choose not to...I guess we reap what we sow.  Also, I'm not sure if I buy into this or not, but many traditional teachings list a groin strike as a possible fatal blow.  I've never heard of this being reality, but what a horrible way to go, eh?

tell that to shaolin monks

Shaolin kung fu - Iron egg skill

i seriously think a shaolin monk could make the beast with two backs up an MMA fighter all day long. Why? because they can take some serious punishment

I'd put my money on the MMA guy (if he is good).  I've heard that those monks are top-notch at things like stretching, forms, breaking...but no so good at actual fighting.  Of course, I'm sure they could all kick MY butt...

El Matador

Back when I used to train Shotokan a lot, I had an acquaintance that did Kung Fu and would go on and on about how he could make the beast with two backs anyone up etc...

I would invite him to spar all the time but he always had some excuse. Finally one day he came. Right of the bat he went for some sort of flying spining kick that I just stepped aside for. Followed it up with a Jab-cross-hook as soon as he landed and that was pretty much it.

So, my vote is for the MMA guy.

Outlaw1100

Agreed...although I would say that attitude (of leading with a jump/spin something-or-other) isn't a criticism of Shaolin so much, but a criticism of anyone who thinks it is OK to fight that way.  TKD has plenty of people like that too...but you did the right thing:  let him throw the technique, get out of the way, and then counter as he's landing.  Or better yet, kick him in the rear as he's spinning and knock him out of the air.

Spinning techniques should only be used after a good set-up and you've got your opponent is on his heels.  Jumping techniques should only be used in the movies.

this is my opinion and how i view it.

Kung fu = chinese martial arts
Karate = japanese martial arts

In modern days, kung fu is taught as a way to pass on a tradition. Rarely will you find someone who learned kung fu specifically to fight. You have to be a master at it to use it effectively. Drillers are killers i guess.

Karate on the other hand, all forms of it, is taught as tradition and self defense. A karate guy can kick most peoples asses. Their sparring is pretty hardcore. THe system is much simpler than kung fu as well.

TKD is well.... i dont think its effective unless you mix it with something. Lots of TKD people move over to kickboxing or Muay tHai and become REALLY good fighters.

MMA is meant strictly for fighting. No one learns MMA for self defense, it comes as a byproduct. MMA is a sport. That is why you do not learn how to deal with real life scenarios. Muay Thai, BJJ, boxing, all those things have rules to fighting.

If you wanted to learn how to defend yourself, you would look to a self defense type of martial arts. Something simple, gets to the point and can tolerate a wide range of attacks with little thinking involved.  Krav Maga is one, Dog Brothers teachers a specific system as well, and from what i've seen Wing Chung stands out as a highly effectice Kung Fu that is strictly meant for self defense.

with that said, can someone teach me how to do a side kick? Bruce Lees side kicks are INSNAE!
