How about electric? A recent popular motorcycle publication had an article on a very sexy "superbike" looking electric bike. Think of the Electric Monster, max torque at 0 RPM, could be fun and "green". Just a thought.

I am not convinced an efficient gas engine isn't less harmful to the environment than electric vehicle batteries..  cost, production and disposal are still issues.   This survey of mine is purely out of curiosity as we have experienced a huge increase in scooter sales so I am wondering if a high mileage Ducati motorcycle under $10K would draw some interest, maybe if there was a demand Ducati or one of the other manufactures may go after it.
I would rather have a mid displacement efficient motorcycle vs any of todays MAXI scooters like Burgmans, Silverwings, Aprillia Atlantic 400's etc..   Admittedly I do have a few 150cc scooters for in town use when I would rather not ride my m/c..

Did you just say 'where's the fun in horsepower and speed'?

Your man card..!! C'mon hand it over...

I'm just saying, I love the monster for it's style, not for it's 1/4 time.  If I want to go 120 mph, I'll jump out of a plane.

this poll is interesting in that it shows the exact reasons why we can all SAY we want to help  save the environment, save fuel, not depend on foreign oil, etc.

but when it comes right down to it, half fo the people WILL NOT make a sacrifice for any of those motives, instead WE ALL WILL pass the buck for "someone else to do that" or we will "make someone else do that" and claim all the while "well i do this for fun and i can afford it", etc.

meaning as usual half of people will pass the buck and do nothing.

Thinking about it more, I'd say a 350/400cc single cylinder w/desmo head, direct port injection, CF panels and wheels -- a modern version of the 60's/70's bikes from Ducati.  Put some "smart technology" into it for freewheeling (electronic slipper clutch) and "at stop on/off mode".  Maybe even an old Supersport style fairing to provide aerodynamics.  Add a bit of trellis frame and aluminum swingarm w/belt drive.  Make it so it's easily modified ala the existing Monster lineup to allow "personalization".  Integrate LED lights front / rear / signals with a cool LCD/LED dash with basic functions.  With the right bit of marketing, it could be a new niche within the motorcycling community (not scooter community).  I easily see something like this for commuting, college campus, inner city riding, etc.  Would it be a high speed racing bike or something for doing an "all day" ride -- no.  But that isn't its purpose either.

I wonder what those Monster 400's get for mileage.  I'm surprised there hasn't been any testing of those here.  Yeah yeah, I know.  we americans all like liter bikes (generalization).

I would contend that our attitude to that effect is one of impact and perspective.  Sure, we don't want to sacrifice HP for MPG, but when I'm going down the highway to work and every car around me has one person in it, including those vehicles built to seat 7+driver or more, I have little urge to change what is effectively a infinitesimal percentage of fuel usage nationwide.

I'll make it easier:

I AM PASSING THE BUCK

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT FUEL COST

I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY FREEDOM TO SATISFY GREENHEADS OR THE RIGHTIES

Figured I should just get that out of the way to prevent confusion.

How about 45 miles to the charge or 585 MPG...

Top speed is only 50 or so mph :( Just seems wrong somehow.

I'm satisfied with the mpg my S4Rs is getting but the range is absolutely deplorable. Is getting 150-160 miles per tank too much to ask for?

At least you arent riding a 1098 my tank range is only a tad over 100miles, my low gas light goes on at about 90miles on a GOOD day

All depends what you want out of the bike.

If you want sport performance, get a sport bike.

If you want MPG performance, get a scooter.

i have a 620 it has 59hp on the dyno and gets 45 mpg with termi and pc3.  if i could get the exact same looking motorcycle or the 696 with the same hp and torque that i currently have but at 100mpg i'd go for it without hesistation.

+1

I don't have termi, but I feel the same way. In most canyons its ridiculous to be higher than 3rd gear. My 620 is practically stock and it rocks
