Carbs.........do they really make you gain

So I can't remember what thread we were on when we were talking about carbs and jet kits, so I'm starting a new thread.
Ron, I remember you saying that after you install the jet kit you would need to have it put on a dyno to fine tune it.  Is this something that I could really screw up, or can it be done by a new to tooling guy?  If new jets are installed and not dyno'ed will the bike run worse?  Is there like a close to optimal.  I am just curious about this because I want more performance out of my R1.  The Yamaha dealer said it would be a minimum of $560 just for the install and that's without dyno.  Hell, I only got $3500.00 in the bike total.  I really don't want to sink another $k in it.  If I did, I'd have a decent paint job on it.  It's already fast, just wondering if I can cheaply make it faster if I already have the jet kit?

Very clever title, ommyta.....I actually got excited and thought we were gonna talk about nutrition......different forum I guess. Although I'm not sure another group of people would tolerate my naughtiness.......you guys are great!  [thumbsup] :-* Okay, back to moto talk.

I'd love to help but I hate that crap. Have had WAY too many older bikes with carbs have their jets and air passages clog up from evaporating gas in the float bowls. Gee, those were the days weren't they? Interesting if you have never done it but it would take me years of counseling to get over it if I helped. And no, I never had a work shop dyno, just a seat of the pants dyno. Lot's and I mean lot's of trial and error to get an inline four with carbs  tuned right and don't forget the balancing act. You really need a vacuum operated carb balancer to do it right. The carbs provide the vacuum since they are constant velocity carbs. Now that I think about it Randy (at Scott's place) has one. We joked and lamented about carb tuning one day. He's forgotten more than I'll ever know. Give him a shout. [thumbsup]

we should pick a saturday or sunday and have a consolidated mods/maintenance/tuning day...whether that means tweaking carbs, or setting up suspension...

I think the Dynojet kit has recommended settings for everything. Not sure how they account for performance exhaust or air filters. The installation of the kit parts should be pretty straightforward once you get the carbs out of the bike.

For the carb equalization that Fastwin mentioned, I have the four-tube mercury manometer to do that. I wouldn't pay anyone $560 to do all the above.

Then just go ride it and see how it feels and sounds. My butt dyno is way out of practice but I bet RichD could help in that department.

Beyond that, you could get a dyno quote from Piper Performance or Jim Sabin. Jim will let you and your team do the bike prep while he does other stuff which would save money. Not sure how Piper feels about that.

After re-reading my earlier post I sound like a prick. "Yes, I've done it before, it's a pain in the ass, screw you I won't help, do it yourself." Yep, sounds like a prick to me! I would delete it but it's already out there. [bang] Sure, I'd help. Not saying Randy isn't 100 times better, but I will help if you find the place to do it. Hint, ***/aka cdc, hint, hint! My place even sucks for my bikes or I'd offer it. The main thing (besides knowledge and ability... [laugh]) is a good air compressor with a good air jet nozzle and lots of Berryman's B-12 carb spray cleaner. Oh yeah, and good rubber industrial gloves. That carb spray will mess up your skin and probably has given me undiagnosed tumors the size of melons! The "balancer" that Ron mentioned is exactly what I was talking about. Had one but my ex-wife "disappeared" it during our divorce... along with clothes, tools, dishes... I digress. [puke] Also helps to have one of those small hanging fuel containers since the tank is off the bike during carb balancing. Yeah, she got rid of that too.

Brian, I never once thought prick when I read that........but now that you mention it and I went back and re-read the post, your an ass(JUST KIDDIN!)  I was really just looking for advice.  I really like the idea McKraut had about a group thing.  I wasn't gonna ask anybody to do it for me though, especially RichD, he's already been so helpful already.......and *** too.  If people want to do a group thing, I'm deffinately down, but I was really trying to figure out what all was involved in doing so.  I think the best thing I could do to learn what is involved is just start taking shit apart and finding out for myself.

Don't really need anything done on my scooters but if a group wrench thingy happens and I'm available count me in. If nothing else I can sit back and enjoy a cigar and cold adult beverage and regale you with rivoting tales of yesteryear about kick starting BSA 441 Victors, right hand shifters, points and condensors and constantly seizing up my Bultaco 250 Pursang!! On second thought, I do want to get invited so I won't mention any of that. :-X

Those chemicals are definitely nasty and really bad for you.  When I was growing up working on my old Rochester Quadra-bogs (GM carbs), I never thought anything about soaking my hands in that stuff for hours.  I'm still trying to combat the liver damage with alcohol.  Try using the nitrile gloves instead of latex.  They look just the same and come in little boxes at the auto parts store, but can be difficult to find.  Latex will dissolve Very quickly.

And use wrap-around safety glasses/goggles.  I insist.  I burned off most of one of my corneas with a quick shot of Berrymans B-12.  Just because you put the nozzle into a hole and squirt, doesn't mean it will come out of another hole.  Sometimes it comes right back at you.....   [evil]

(am I starting it sound like fastwin??  nah, I'm using paragraphs  [thumbsup] )   ;D

Would love to come help you with it whenever you get ready, or if a group wants to mess with them.  We could probably do it in our garage if that's convenient for the group.
