1 minute rounds cycling in and out for about 45 minutes.  there was only 3 of us. so it was 2 rounds, 1 round out, 2 rounds 1 round out etc.

im still trying to get jump roping down, i cant go fast without sheering off a toe. working on it...been 3 months and i can keep a steady paced rythem.

and you are completely right, getting on the side of him make the beast with two backsign sucked. i ate so many punches and he just stepped back. Eventually he just let me on the inside, and im too short to do anything but body shots, liver shots and kick to the leg, my uppercuts wont even reach his chin, so i just uppercut the body. i need to find that liver.

heres an excuse to bring an ice old one to gym next time

Sprint/jog intervals and jump ropes.

I'm short too so I would always set them up by circling and letting them come to me.  I would time their attacks and counter with a lunging straight and sweeps.  Once off balance it's easy to get into a clinch if you don't take them down, or, you can do a quick burst of punches and disengage.  Works for me, and i'm always going against taller folks.

You don't always have to square off with your opponent so find angles.  It sucks but a great inside fighter is a scary thing!

I'm convinced that this is the reason that short guys are rarely knocked out. We eat so many punches that we become immuned. I almost miss those days. I presume you got a 30 second breather between rounds. 3 minute rounds seem to last forever.

As your cardio increases, you become less sloppy with the rope. Right now, I doubt I would be able to go 1 minute without hitting my toe. One thing that we used to do that sounds easy, but isn't was to jab a heavy bag without stopping for a full round (3 minutes), then cross for a round. You start off like it's super easy. After the first minute, your shoulder starts to complain. By the second minute, you can barely keep the arm up. With 30 seconds left, you want to die. If you can do that with no problem, you are in shape.

Man we did the same thing.  I wanted to cut my arms off.

That little exercise sucked. You know what also sucked, doing sit-ups off the ring where you had to extend over the side. We went passed the 0 degree angle. My abs hurt for days after. I miss those days.

Does anyone here do any grappling art.  I was doing BJJ but damn is it expensive!!!!  $150/month compared to $5.83/month for Judo plus $50 for yearly registration.  I'm blessed with a club that does both standing and newaza (ground game).

I've dabbled in BJJ. I'm hoping to find a judo dojo down in Santiago when I move. Judo is one of those arts that in some cases it's better to be short. With a lower center of gravity, it's harder for people to throw you.

We do a similar exercise to the 3 minute heavy bag routine.

It's 3 (or 2) on one. 3 guys grab large kicking bags, 1 guy is monkey in the middle. The 3 guys charge the monkey from different postions and angles continuously, the monkey attacks/counters with anything they've got. 2 minute intervals,5 times. I usually, fall down after about the 3 round.

As for grappling, we have been working on disecting the Okinawan and Shotokan kata trying to find the real application. We have pretty much moved away from what Japanese adapted into the system. There are tons of locks, breaks and throws in the kata, that were never taught or lost somewhere. We still practice the long range techniques, but we focus much more on close strikes, take downs, breaks and throws. Of course, if someone gets me to the ground I'd be make the beast with two backsed because I have no skills on da floor.

YES Judo is awesome to be short!!!  But tall guys have there uchimatas which is a hard fall to take.

Funny because Funikoshi Sensei was friends with Kano Sensei, which is why there is a lot of Judo throws in Shotokan.

This.  Just jogging will really only help you recover quicker between rounds.

We face a partner, and then 'pyramid' double-unders... he does one, I do one, he does two, I do two, etc...  up to ten and back down, six minutes or so.  It sucks.

I don't have anything to add to the sweep/stance debate.  And I pretty much already worship Buakaw, so thanks for the vid.

No shit, this hobby of ours is expensive. I'm doing MT BJJ and Sub Wrestling at my gym (I actually just changed gyms for the summer) and it comes out to about 130/mo  It's worth it, though.

Doing BJJ is like nothing other, 5 minutes of rollling are like 30 mins of just pure stand up.

I grappled for a number of years at a private shoot wrestling club with a bunch of good friends.  I had grown up boxing under my old man and wrestled in highschool, but wanted to learn some submission stuff. A number of the guys were intructors under Erik Paulson and only trained privately for their own training......no students or paid lessons. I was the only guy who didn't really know anything at the beginning and it was really great of them to let me train with them and I can't imagine what the amount of time I receive for free was worth.

I also switched from boxing to muay thai around the same time to learn how to use elbows, knees and kicks.

Just got back from Judo practice.  I got hammered by all the blackbelts (one national level judoka) and one brown belt.  Then the elderly 6th dan sensei pointed at me and wanted to do some newaza (mat work)....I didn't want to go too hard on him since I out weight the guy by 100lbs but I was able to pass his guard easily but just since I was being nice, I didn't want to crush him while in side control.  So...he turtled up and snagged my arm while at it.  Couldn't do anything but tap....

Some days, you throw em around...some days...your counting light fixtures.... :'(

Time to drink a cold one!   [drink]

In my case, I've been able to count how many holes are in the ceiling from the amount of time I've spent staring up there.
