My grandfather died last night at 0234. He was USN and was at Tokyo Bay on Sep 2, 1945 when the instrument of surrender was signed. My grandmother (his wife) died exactly 30 days ago and we had her service last Saturday. After 67 years of marriage it seems he was ready and wanted to move on to the next life to join her.

Hats off to the greatest generation, both those that survived and raised us and those young men that died and never got the chance to live their dreams.

dang, I'm sorry. May he rest in peace.

I remember when they played Taps for my Granddad. I kept one of the shells after the 21 gun salute. They were not called the Greatest Generation for nothing.
He man, where are all the ads?

My condolences.

It sounds like he had a good run.

You can't ask for more.

It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

You have my condolences.  My grandfather was also in the pacific ...
Had a ship sunk out from underneath him.  I was honored to know
Him and told him so.  Hopefully you told your grandfather what
He meant to you.

Truly the greatest generation.

Looking back at everything that these people lived through and seeing their happiness and joy in life not dwindle is something that has stuck with me.

[beer] here is to their strength, perseverance, and fantastic example they've set for the young'ns like myself.

And  [beer] here is to the brave people that continue to serve

Apparently the park service was told to put up the barricades and keep people out. But none of the rangers would lift a finger to keep those guys out.

All federal parks are being closed as part of the government shutdown. USFS is not trying to keep people out, vets or not.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

The memorials in dc are sidewalks with a wall.  They put more guards in to close them than are normally there when open.

If they can stand there to turn folks away, they can stand at attention when vets come in to see names of former comrades now dead.
