Do they sell Subaru Outbacks in Oz?  I mean, they should based on name alone.

Anyway, my father just bought a 2015 and loves it.  Good car, modern tech, has space for hauling, able to handle various conditions, not too flashy.  I think my next car might be an Outback, assuming I don't go the pickup route.

Yep they do. And also the Forester which is more outbacky than the Outback.

Mrs Ung has an utterly dependable 2.5 petrol Subaru Forester, which she loves.  I think it's lame.  The Outback 3.6 was on my shortlist.....  didn't make the cut.  Grunty sure enough, but seems a little too fond of a drink.  Not too sure about a CVT either.  Another Subaru on my shopping list was the Subaru Levorg 2.0GT...

..I could forgive it it's stupid name, but I can't get past it's awkward 'styling'  :-\.  And it only comes with that CVT.  And it's probably a size smaller than I'm fond of.

The German's modern turbo fours seem to offer the best of both worlds (unless they're lying  ;)) and I'm a fan of the dual clutch type auto box.

Mate of mine has the old boxy styled 2.5L turbo Forester. Seems practical enough. I hear they're thirsty though.

Can't say I'm a fan of the dual clutch box the way Ford executed it.

You can't manufacture million dollar technology for 32 cents.

My experience of Ford's dual clutch autobox was completely different.  The most endearing part of driving my previous car (a diesel Ford Mondeo) was it's dual clutch gearbox.  Loved it.  On rare occasion it made some horrendous clunk-thud noises.... but in 240,000kms of hard driving it was utterly faultless.

DSG is fantastic in the VW Audi products.  So good there is no reason to buy a manual.  The small Ford, at least on this side of the pond, has no idea what it is doing.  I hate CVTs.

I could have lived with the noise.

Really, the disconcerting racket events were pretty rare.  And whilst a little alarming..... never amounted to..... anything of concern.

That's exactly how I felt about the Ford Mondeo 'DSG'.  I'm really looking forward to VAG's new Skoda Superb (not available here until March/April).

I loooove the 2.0T in the ol' lady's '11 Tiguan. That engine is a great little overachiever.

My next car will be my old 1985 FJ60, but with 280,000 miles on the clock and the hellish cost of rebuilding the original 2F motor, the question occupying my mind these days is "What's your next engine?" Spend the $$$ and go diesel (and if so, which one?) or just put a Chevy 350 in there and be done with it?

Diesel, Cummins I6.  :)

That would be so awesome.....

I've had no issues with my Focus, to the point where I will be looking at a Taurus SHO next time I'm in the market for a new to me vehicle.

My ex is about to have a third tranny put into her '13 Focus. It's a POS CVT.

The reason we have our Durango now (besides the size upgrade) is because of the (un)reliability issues with the Chrysler CVT in her '13 Jeep Patriot.

That thing didn't really do anything well. It was a gas hog. It got worse mileage than the bigger Durango we have now. The Patriot had the 2.4 I4, the Durango a 3.6 V6.
