45th HS Reunion

Well, they finally beat me down. I'm driving up to MD this afternoon to see a bunch of folks I haven't seen in well over 40yrs. They do a golf outing on Friday, with an after party and dinner dance on Saturday. It should be, well it'll be whatever it will. I don't Golf these days, but I paid so I can get a cart, ride around, and basically make the beast with two backs with people.

One of the great annoyances in life is the guy NOT playing in the foursome but just hanging out in the cart make the beast with two backsing with people.

One of the great joys in life is BEING the guy not playing in the foursome and justing make the beast with two backsing with people.

I don't get invited to my hs reunions because they called for me, years ago, when my mom was having a really bad day and she told them I was dead.

It's really worked out well for me   I did't care much for hs or the people I went there with.

So how was the dinner dance?

I had a great time over that weekend. My running joke was “Hey, I came here to see my friends, and everyone’s parents showed up.” A little back story. I grew up in a fairly unique neighborhood (maybe not so much back then, but certainly by today’s standards). Everything was pretty much based around the Boys Club. We all played sports and most of the fathers were our coaches, we were all very close.

From the age of around 6 to when I joined the Army we did everything together. When we went to the beach in the summer, there’d be 10-12 families that all went. We’d rent a bunch of trailers in Montego Bay in Ocean City MD, ate together, hung out on the beach together etc etc. Most families had 3-5 kids, so there was a bunch of us. We were at each other’s house all the time growing up.

Anyway, I hadn’t seen any of these people since we were all 18-20, so when I showed up (think Back to the Future). I made a 40+ year jump in time in a matter of seconds/minutes. Now they all only had to process me, I had 20-30 folks to try and process. It was surreal to say the least.

I had a blast driving the beer cart the first day, made 5 laps around the course. One lady asked if I had any vodka, ‘I’ll get some’ Next pass she and others had chilled shots. Another lady said I’d drink some if you had cranberry juice. Next trip around she had her juice. Everyone got a kick out of my attention to detail. (Don’t really know any other way).

The after party at the Country Club brought in even more folks I hadn’t seen in forever, and stories were flying around that I had all but forgotten. Several guys are musicians and played, switching out drummers and singers. It was a hoot.

The next night was the dinner dance. I was really impressed with several of the ladies who are now in their early 60’s. Quite striking all decked out. I talked to so many folks that night my head was spinning.

It took me several days to get my head wrapped around it all. I’ve received several requests to run the beer cart next year. I’m in.
