Title: Bourbon
Post by: He Man on January 23, 2009, 12:36:55 AM
I love it.

I need more types of bourbon to try that are a bit unique. So far I've had Woodford Reserve, Wild turkey, Knob Creek, makers mark, jim bean. Mostly well known stuff, but are there any unique bourbons out there that someone would recommend?

Woodford smells so make the beast with two backsing good, and wild turkey is what i usually get at the bar.

Woodford is good shit and very unique.  I just tried 1792 which is also a reserve made by a small, independent company.  It is very good for the price and comes in a nice looking bottle, if you care about that.

A lot of good single barrel stuff out there.  Eagle Rare single barrel is good as is Booker's, though a bit pricey.  A lot of the good bourbons are actually made by Jim Beam.

Bourbon has long been my favorite liquor, though I've never been a fan of shooting it.  I've recently started drinking Manhatten's, I'd highly recommend those if you haven't had them before.  Just make sure you order it with good bourbon because some people make it with Canadian Whishkey.

Another +1 on Eagle Rare.

I also like Evan William's Single Barrel.  My cheaper alternative is Elijah Craig.  Very oaky in flavor ~

Bookers. Let it dilute(flash) with a couple cubes for a few minutes before your first sip.  Also you need to learn proper breathing technique before said first sip.  Its 126.6 proof.

Eagle Rare ( the 17 if you can find it)

George T. Stagg ( again if you can find it) this years batch is just over 141 proof.

Any of the small batch Bourbons, Knob Creek, Bookers, Basil Haydens, are good everday Bourbons.

Also look for Buffalo Trace. A good value bourbon.

If you like Bourbon you may want to try Rye.

Thomas Handy is a good High end Rye but could be difficult to find.

But for the money. One of the best Values is Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond. 100 proof Great drinking Rye at under $15.00/bottle

I'm currently well into a bottle of Knob Creek, which I prefer over Maker's Mark (which I do like).  I've seen Bullitt on the shelf; I'll have to give it a try.

I prefer to sip bourbon, neat.

Eagle Rare ( the 17 if you can find it) $59.99-79.99/bottle (I've seen these sell for more on Fleabay)

George T. Stagg ( again if you can find it) this years batch is just over 141 proof. $59.99-79.99/bottle (I've see these go for over $100 on Fleabay)

Any of the small batch Bourbons, Knob Creek, Bookers, Basil Haydens, are good everday Bourbons. $26.99-49.99/bottle for these

Also look for Buffalo Trace. A good value bourbon.  $21.99-26.99/bottle

If you like Bourbon you may want to try Rye.

Thomas Handy is a good High end Rye but could be difficult to find.  $59.99-79.99/bottle

But for the money. One of the best Values is Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond. 100 proof Great drinking Rye at under $15.00/bottle

^^^^^^^ I would seriously seek this one out. Can't beat if for the price

Of course depending on where you live some of these may be higher in price or may be restricted from being sold because of their alcohol content.

That bacon bourbon....jeez. I dont know how that would taste. I mean bacon is great, but drinking it????? And maple syrup....it fits the bill, but  i think cane surgar might be better....but that just me, im not a fan of maple syrup in anything but pancakes...but i wanna try!

Title: Re: Bourbon
Post by: rgramjet on January 25, 2009, 06:33:01 PM
I find most Bourbons to be much sweeter than most Scotchs.  Kind of a blanket statement I know.  I find Scotch to be more "tunable" and complex depending on region and added water.
Title: Re: Bourbon
Post by: He Man on January 25, 2009, 06:53:29 PM
I never thought about the role of water in bourbon, but NYC tap water is damn refreshing. I never liked bourbon and water anywhere else. the tap there has too many minerals. and it ruins the taste.

im not a scotch guy so i cant tell you how to compare it. Scotch to me is too much for me. But you should defintely try a good bourbon to form your own opinion, if you dont like it, you can send the rest of the bottle my way. :-)

Clear Creek McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey

Damn tasty and relative cheap for something that tastes close to a Islay single malt.

I drink just about everything that can be called "whisky", but Bourbons are my favorite, and their cousin the Tennessee Whisky.
George Dickel 12 is the best for most drinking, although their Barrel Select is gold.  If you were blindfolded, you'd think the former was a very smooth bourbon and the latter was ambrosia.

Try throwing a few cubes in the Scotch and let it rest/dilute for a few minutes.  Its really good once you develop a system.
Title: Re: Bourbon
Post by: Drunken Monkey on January 25, 2009, 08:31:52 PM
I don't recommend ice cubes as you get a variable amount of dilution and you kill the flavor by chilling it.

A splash of cold water on the other hand can completely change a scotch from a smokey, peaty monster into a nice, sweet drink.

This is why in general I like Scotches: More options  [wine]

There are "purists" that will dissuade you from adding anything to your Scotch.   [roll]  It is your drink so tailor it to your liking.

Personally I didnt care for Scotch until I experimented with it.  With experience, there are some that I like neat, some with water and some with ice.

If I can't drink it neat, I don't drink it.  That's just my preference.  I made the mistake of drinking some Maker's Mark on the rocks, and ended up drinking the whole damn bottle and getting drunk as make the beast with two backs.  The ice (as DM said) mutes the flavor and makes it too easy to drink too fast...and get drunk as make the beast with two backs.  Of course, if that's your goal, knock yourself out.  I prefer to sip it and enjoy (not to mention, I'm a lightweight).

I agree that ice can and does mute the flavor....exactly my point.  I wouldnt hand a glass of Talisker (burnt rubber mixed with peat and diesel fuel, with a Honey finish) neat to someone that wanted to give single malt Scotch an initial taste.....unless I wanted to watch them take one sip and spit it out. [evil]

When I hear people say they cant stand Scotch, they've probably tried something full strength and were overwhelmed.

herm - knew I liked you!!!  Bushmill's is my favorite.  Summertime I like it with a little cool water (filtered, not spring water , nor tap water).  Winter , I know it's craxy, but I like it with a little hot water.  Just like a hot toddy.  Also prefer it to Jamesons for Irish Whiskey (sans mint muck!!).

Hubby and I find Bulliet to be better than Jack Daniels.  Don't get me wrong, we still buy Jack, just not as much [thumbsup]

local Irish bar has single malts by the glass.  love Oban.  peaty, oaky, salty. Yum!!

Went to Irish Bar that carried single malt scotches and irish whiskeys and talked to the owner on an off night.  He explained a lot, and our bar bill was outrageous (like $80 - 100), but when you look at some of the prices, i'd hate to pay $50 - $75 and hate what I bought.  It was an investment in our future purchases.

also like Connomorra - VERY peaty but smooth.

+1 on Oban, one of my all time favorites!  If you like salty/peaty but lighter than Oban, give Bruichladdich a try.  No matter where you are, close your eyes and take a sip, it takes you to the ocean....

Frankly, no.

It is a novelty.

I found it about 10 yrs ago when they still imported to the USA -- for about $20/bottle.  In reviews, people either rave about it or claim it tastes like bongwater.

They char the barrels before aging it, which gives it the color.  To say that it has a "toasty" finish is understating it.

I bought a case of it, I liked it.  It is different from the typical scot whisky fare.  Definitely worth a taste if you can find it, but probably not worth $300 for the bottle -- they only put it out abotu once every 4-5 years now, which makes the price.

Lapahroig, Oban, Talisker, or any of the Glenmorangies aged in tasks that used to hold something else (Port  [thumbsup]) are my faves.

Beyond that, I'm still looking for a good rye.

Thanks for the link to Eagle Rare. Must try.
Had the chance recently to sample all of the Bushmill products. Blackbush is a nice step up for a blended Irish wiskey but when you get to the 10, 12, 16 and 20 yr single malts there are some rare flavors going on. I enjoyed the 16 the best. Almost peaty and very smokey. Tasted like dirt at times. Good stuff.

This sparks another question in my mind, then.  As I usually only have one, on a given night, what bourbons do you consider "one-drink-worthy"?  (I currently drink Knob Creek, having graduated from Maker's Mark.)

It's like going to the movie store, I can't remember shit when I get in front of the selection.  I picked up a bottle of Bulliet (cheaper than Knob Creek, btw), and I'm on the south end of a couple of fingers.  Not bad.  Doesn't taste as smooth as Knob Creek, but I'll give it a go.

My liquor store is shy on selection.

Mine is too.  The Bulliet is nice, but you're right, not near as smooth as something like Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Eagle Rare etc.  It's as rough as Elijah Craig, but has that really nice oaky flavor I like ~

I enjoy Makers and Bulliet, but I have to admit that over my Christmas vacation I developed a taste for blended Scotch a bit more than bourbon.  I didn't care for my last bottle of Knob Creek and I don't think I would buy it again.

Similar to painting with a solvent based Lacquer.  When you first apply it, the solvent evaporates giving off harsh fumes.  When you first pour a glass of Bookers neat, the fumes can be harsh unless you employ proper breathing technique...

A little water or a couple cubes will ease the drink and make it more palatable IMO.

Breathing technique:  Do not inhale through your nose or mouth while taking a sip.  Hold your breath slightly when you get the glass within a foot of your face.  Trust me on this....

Sniff it slightly first without intention of taking a sip and you'll see what I mean, especially with a fresh pour.  Good Luck!

Anybody try McCormicks Platte Valley Corn Whiskey.  A buddy of mine brought some trout fishing this past weekend.  80 proof, less bite than a light beer and barely any nose.

If someone handed you an iced tea glass of this stuff after a workout, cold, you could chug it like gatorade.  Its that.... Im not going to say smooth because "smooth" implies some taste.  Its that "waterlike". Way less bite than any vodka Ive ever had....

My friend said "Whatever you do, don't have a third glass".  I hads to know...  Aye aye aye.

That's funny, b/c we used to name our trivia team "We like our women like we like out coffee" and then a different finishing line every week.

Some of the better ones were:

...black, bitter, and in a Waffle House at 3am.

...with crabs.

...hot.  But not so hot that I can't put my dick in them.

...between my legs on the way to work, keeping my nuts warm.

...full of whiskey and covered with whipped cream.

...ground by Juan Valdez and his donkey.

...with a spoon stuck in them to stir things up.

(And why exactly would you like your women in a styrofoam cup?)

Took a bottle of Elijah Craig to Deal's Gap this year (instead of Jack Daniels).

In my bourbon innocence, Elijah Craig was assumed to be similar to JD over ice
1. bleah!
2. sweet
3. would be good for sanitizing wounds.

(apparently I like peated not oaked.  coriander, spices and flowers do not mix well with my tastebuds.)

Bump, you jackasses!

Christmas yielded me a bottle of Booker's this year and I'm jazzed to try it.  I think I'm going to wait until I get this new job though.  I guess it will be consumed either way, whether I get the job or not  [drink]

There's been a discussion on our local board about booze in general (not just whiskeys) and I've been more and more inclined to start in on Scotch.  I've been an American whiskey kinda guy for years (god bless Evan Williams), but it seems my tastes have been meandering more and more towards earthy flavors as I get older.  I really like Jonny Walker black (smooooooky) and would kill most people for Glenlivet 15, but most scotches seem entirely too sweet for me which is the reason why I've kinda shyed away from them for the most part.  On that note I'm working on a 6 pack of New Belgium "Abbey" to try and attune my taste buds to more sweet flavors.    Anyone recommend a good, earthy, smoky scotch in the lower spectrum (<$25) that would be a good starting point?

Bookers is excellent.  Give it a minute after you pour it to flash off, it's really strong and packs a punch.  Good stuff though.  That was my evening drink out the honeymoon cruise.

Title: Re: Bourbon

If price is not an issue, then you can't go wrong with Basil Hayden.  Anybody know if there's any chance Nicky has some family ties to the stuff?  How close is Owensboro to Bourbon County?

Anyway, at a lesser price, I prefer Old Weller 107.  They only release a small amount of it around the holidays, but you can set it side by side with more popular bourbons (read Makers) and beat the taste, and its 107 proof!  If you pay $25 for it, you're paying too much.  Should be closer to $20.

I just got a bottle of Elijah Craig for Christmas from my boss.  I think it runs about $20 and is allegedly a bourbon for the scotch drinker.  A bit caramelly for my taste.

And then there's Old Pogue, advertised as one of the oldest Bourbon's out there.  I like.

Anybody who knows their shit about rye whiskeys willing to start a thread?  I'm eager to learn  [beer]

Just reread your post.

Im surprised that you find Scotch to be too sweet compared to Bourbon?  The only "sweetness" Ive encountered with a Scotch so far, is Talisker 10 and thats just for a split second of honey in between the burnt rubber and diesel fuel.....

I find Makers Mark and Elijah Craig to be like pancake syrup.  I loves me some Bookers!

Just finished a bottle of that myself.  I'm not a straight bourbon, or whiskey in general, guy.  I use it for Manhattans, and it works really well.  For Christmas, my brother got me a bottle of Maker's 46...damn.  When I go out I get my Manhattans with Maker's Mark but the 46 puts regular Maker's to shame.  If you like Maker's try and find the 46, I don't think you'll be disappointed.  Just remember, this is in Manhattans and not straight.  YMMV there.

Tuthilltown Hudson Manhattan Rye (and River Rum)

and can't seem to finish:

Buffalo Trace
Title: Re: Bourbon
Post by: Jarvicious on December 30, 2010, 07:08:13 PM
Oh, that Buffalo Trace would have been gone quick around here :)

I'll have to give the Bourbon/Scotch rivalary another go, I guess.  We got a new Irish pub in town back when I was in college so I felt obligated to go and try a whole slew of different Scotches, but then again I really wasn't much of a whiskey drinker back then.  I remember trying Speyside (one of the cheaper ones) and maybe Glenmorangie and thinking how...I guess.... sweetish and weak they tasted compared to bourbon.  I think a new winter hobby just presented itself :)

Me and a buddy went halfs on a bottle of Craig 18 last year and being the novice whiskey drinkers we were (3 fingers, neat, no flashing) couldn't stand the shit.  We let our nose hairs grow back and finished the bottle and it was much better when properly prepared.

Now if I could find anyone local who actually likes whiskey......

but on the Bourbon note, has anyone done the Bourbon trail? I've been wanting to do it for a while and it'd be a good meeting point for east & west coasters. who's down? are there good roads in Kentucky?

QuoteI'll have to give the Bourbon/Scotch rivalary another go, I guess.

Don't know if there is a rivalry, really.  I find so much more subtlety and complexity with scotch.

The peatier the better.  Caol Ila is my standby, though it's not carried in many establishments.  I often settle for Oban or Talisker.  I tend to shy away from the sweeter of the lot (such as MaCallan), no matter their popularity.  Anybody know any peaty scotches out there to recommend?

That said, I'm shifting towards bourbon because its made stateside, and the prices are so much more reasonable.  I'll save the $ for carbon fiber.

Results -

Old Weller 107, $18 for a 750ml bottle - Surprisingly smooth, but still has a bit of a bite and a strong oak flavor, smooth finish.  Medium sweetness

1792 Ridgemont Reserve, $26 for a 750ml bottle - Smoother than the 107, oak not as strong, and sweeter, smooth finish.  Overall, less flavorful than the 107

Johnnie Walker Black Label $37 for a 750ml bottle - Peaty, smokey to the point of tasting burnt, bitter finish.

I'll stick to my bourbons, whiskey and whisky.

My preference is the Old Weller 107, strong, oaky, smooth & clean finish and good price for the proof ~

for peaty I like Connemorra.  I'm also a fan of Oban, so you may like Connemorra.

Someone on here said I'd like Bruichladdich.  Can anyone verify it's peaty?  Also, which Bruich would you choose?  I think there's a choice of three bottles, varying ages.

B and I picked up a bottle of this earlier:

William Larue Weller

Wow!!   :o

Yummy stuff.  Stronger than Blanton's, but smooth.  A nice vanilla aftertaste.

Would never guess it's 126 proof.

Have you tried Bookers?  Proof-wise, it's similar and I remember it being fairly smooth.

Okay, that's it. I'm coming to visit. Who else is in?

Indiana is a day trip for me.  I'm down :).  Then again, the BMW did take a dump in Southern Indiana on our way to NY last year, I can only hope the Duc would survive the trip.

So, would this be considered a WIMBY?

JW Black is far from the whiskey you should use to evaluate Scotch's on.  Try something from Speyside, or a Dalmore...

On that note, JW Black is for mixed drinks like old schools scotch and soda and definitely has its purpose there. In a hot climate like Houston, I always have a bottle on hand!

Regarding Dalmore, I had a chance to try their entire collection, minus the extra rare, at a tasting this summer. I don't actually get to indulge in this level of drinking, being a lonely entrepreneur who is and incredibly picky and voracious eater already, so I haven't actually bought a bottle. The King Alexander was particularly spectacular for me, given that I'm a passionate port lover from way back and the madeira aged notes of the barrel really came through. Try it if you can find it for sure!

No, it's excellent.  You defintely have to prep it properly and let the glass rest for a few minutes, but the flavor is really complex.  I'm not going to fake it and try and tell you what kind of flavors I'm finding, but it changes from the time you take a sip to the time you slug it down.

Opened a bottle of Blantons Single Barrel that someone gave me for Christmas of '09.  Always thought it was going to be the cheesey round bottle of hooch that lives forever on the bar (next to my Talisker).

Much to my surprise, it is now in my top three Bourbons!  I like it better than Bookers.  First sip is dry with a hint of salt (big surprise), then the semi typical sweetness follows, blah blah blah.

Bottom line: Its good shit worth trying.   [thumbsup]  [thumbsup]

I have ~never~ had rye in my life.  There is a local distillery (Catoctin) that one of my neighbors is a part owner of and he's been trying to get me to come out.  I'll just ask for a sample bottle first...

Any other rye suggestions?  I'm a confirmed bourbon fan.  I like scotches and irish whiskies but by far prefer bourbons.  I also like anise whiskies like raki or arak and also grappa.  My tastes are wide.

Some of the ryes I have tried and like were High West Rocky Mountain Rye, Whistle Pig Rye, and Rittenhouse Rye. My uncle is the Rye guy so I will have to get some more suggestions from him.
I'm more of a Scotch guy and more specifically, Islays.

Just had a glass of Rittenhouse that I bought today.  It's tasty.  Not very complex but very drinkable.  It was either Rittenhouse at $15/ bottle or Jim Beam at $9.65.  Rittenhouse won because its 100 proof compared to the JB 80 proof rye.

I should have elaborated. Hehe. The Rittenhouse I had was the 12yo stuff. The shelf brand is like 2-5 years. But yeah, the shelf stuff is still emminently drinkable.

Seeking suggestions....

I decided it would be cool to make some Bourbon sugar to have on hand. I'm kind of inventing this, so its an experiment. The idea is this, I already make vanilla sugar by putting my discarded vanilla beans in an airtight container of sugar for a few weeks and since bourbon soaked oak chips are used to infuse beers, I thought I might try to use bourbon soaked oak chips in sugar like the vanilla beans. Then I can use the sugar to accent desserts or even in coffee drinks (like my cigar latte), first thoughts were bourbon crema catalan but there's plenty of fun stuff for it.

So, thoughts on what bourbon I should use to infuse the chips? Obviously some nice caramel notes, but nothing expensive!

Don't go too high end, the subtlety will be lost. Maker's Mark should do you just fine.

what do you think about cooking the sugar and bourbon to a hard-crack and then regrinding it into pourable crystals?

I drank a bottle of Kentucky Vintage a few months ago that had a really soothing caramelly/vanilla-y flavor to it that would be great with a dessert or just added to sugar.  Not too much more than Maker's Mark, I don't think.  Let us know how it turns out though, I'm game for anything Bourbon infused :)

Never heard of it.  I only drink Captain Morgan when I'm in Baghdad, and that's the Spiced Gold stuff.  I'm not sure they sell it in the States but it's much better than the usual Captain.  These days, I drink Zaya.  This stuff is amazing.  Sweet but with a kick.

So I have a friend who is a big whiskey drinker and we were chatting about whatever and it came up that he hasn't seen a lot of westerns, but likes them.  I love westerns but don't drink a lot of whiskey, though want to try more.  Solution: ten weeks, ten westerns, ten whiskeys (or bourbons).

We just started.  So far we've done the following (note: my palatte is obviously undeveloped, more experienced drinkers may not concur):

1. Unforgiven and Elijah Craig 12 yr (which has been mentioned a bunch on this thread).  Nice, even flavor and a good inexpensive starter for me since it cuts well with a splash of soda or ginger.

2. The Magnificent Seven and Widow Jane 7 yr.  WJ is from a Brooklyn-based distillery (but process goes through Kentucky and the Catskills).  Was very good---smooth and a tiny bit peppery/spicy.  I recommend it if you can find it.  http://www.widowjanespirits.com/ (http://www.widowjanespirits.com/)

I will keep updating as I explore more.  Next week: Tombstone; whiskey TBD (I leave that to the friend).

Why not get a couple of wheel guns and when you finish the movie and whiskey you could shoot the makethebeastwithtwobacks out of the TV? (garage sale TV)

WIDOW JANE DREGS

Our whiskeys are bottled by racking off single  barrels. We stop short of the last inch when empting as there is too much charcoal and sediment. These whiskey dregs are collected into a glass demijane.

When we received our new bottling line we decided to test on the Dregs demijane of Widow Jane barrels 1-100.  Our beautiful new machine prowdly spit out the bottles with the labels upside down...We laughed and chalked it up to technological progress and set a new tradition for us. Every 100 barrels the dregs are bottled upside down in a limited release of up to only 100 bottles.

Our founder siad we make such incredibly smooth whiskey, sometimes he feels nostalgic for a hot whiskey he rembers in his youth. When you are in the mood for something bolder this is the bottle to go for.

Caught wind of a Pappy Von Winkle/Buffalo Trace tasting locally that The wife and I are just giddy about.

I didn't drink bourbon until we did a tasting of Knob Creek at Jim Beam this year. It is amazing how the barrels are different by not only age but by where they are in the building.

The premise is, barrels remaining from now defunct or closed or transitioned distillers in their portfolio are bottled and sold. They are extremely limited and some of them (Old Blowhard) are unlikely to be seen again.

9. Silverado and Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon.  First, praise for Silverado that in spite of its campiness at times it remains my favorite western, even on my 100th-or-whatever viewing.  Anyway, Rock Hill is one of dozens of bourbons owned by the Buffalo Trace company.  As for flavor, it was just what I think of when I think of bourbon, so you can't go wrong with it.  Still, it didn't have anything that stood out or called to me, just a standard bourbon-y bourbon.  But not really worth the extra money ($65)---plenty of better or more interesting bourbons at that level, and plenty of better options that are cheaper (eg Eagle Rare and Basil Hayden).

Easily the best bourbon I've had so far.  20 year old, sweet and a bit spicy.  Goes down smooth.  I couldn't stop drinking it.  At $80/bottle I was reluctant, but it is worth it.  I definitely would choose it over Widow Jane ($60) and Hudson ($45 for 375ml).  Not sure I would spring for 26 yr old Old Blowhard at $170-200/bottle, but the Barterhouse is just fine with me.  [thumbsup]

ZILBERT: go out and treat yourself to a bottle and let me know what you think.

Definitely a fan. Had several glasses over a game of Cards Against Humanity last Friday night and enjoyed every drop.

I will most likely be calling to ask my guy to set aside a couple more bottles just to have.

It is like the Orphan barrel bottles and limited. It was so good I went out later and bought another and put it in my secret stash.

Yeah?  Never been able to get into the rye varieties.  Their Doable Oak is mighty tasty though.

I was in US Virgin Islands last month and now realize how much added tax North Carolina charges for liquor. A good bottle of liquor is about twice as expensive here. [thumbsdown]

I hate BS-made up greeting card holidays.

That being said today is National Bourbon Day. I can change when required
