The board will need to be down while that is fixed, so we are waiting until the right time to do it, and we will give warning when it happens, but probably not until this weekend.

The current logo I made. It is actually a clutch plate, not a gear.
I tried to do a circular logo with a clutch plate as a foundation, but was not happy with the results.

We'll set this up with a proper thread for voting and such after we've gotten a few more choices.
And, there's a few wrinkles that need to be thrown in, like needing to have one that will fit onto a sidestand puck as well as one that fits on a T-shirt (just examples, it's a little more complicated than that and hopefully it'll be resolved soon).

Just to restate what speeddog said:
We will start a poll when we get a field of good candidates - we are not in any rush, so take a week if you need it. We don't want to miss a great logo by rushing.
_______________________________________
Keep in mind:
* It needs to be scalable. It should look look 1 inch tall on the forum, and it should look good 1 foot tall on banner.
* It can be 2 parts - a larger logo with the name and text, and a smaller icon logo like the dml meatball.
* It should be able to be transfered into a CAD program for cutting into metal parts (so things with super fine detail like the wire frame monster would be a problem).
* Not too many colors - that drives up price for printing

bp,
It's a logo not a banner. :-\

C'mon I've got to finish this thingy. ;D
The dreaded red X.
Attempt No. 1:
Was lightly inspired by the ducati "mechanicca" wings, while also incorporating the latest "dynamic D" logo.
Also included the loveable clutch plate as a subtle note, per the current feedback in the thread.
Included is a version for light background, and a version for dark backgrounds. Colors are up for changing of course.
This is a scalable vector graphic, so it's compatible with laser cutting, etching (plate brackets? clutch covers?), screen printing (t-shirts?), and computerized embroidering (patches! hats?), as well as most other forms of visual communication.
I even included a small tagline / slogan.
I had considered giving it a little "hooligan" personality by adding a small horns and a devil tail, but thought i'd leave that out for now.
What do you guys think??
(hopefully this image post works)
thats great corey!
what would it look like if the trellis frame was true to the shape/design of the monster?
wonder also if it is possible to "ducati monster worldwide" or should it be "Ducati Monster Forum"....?) in a rough shape of the monster tank
would you be willing to sketch that up?
Well, i pretty much exactly traced the front half of the frame, with only some really slight tweaks. I'm having a bit of trouble picturing your "tank" idea, do you think you could maybe sketch it on paper and show me? I'd be more than willing to execute it... Maybe describe it a little bit differently for me?
Are you wanting the "wings" to not be wings, but rather a full frame, with one short half and one long half? With the type conforming to the rough shape of the monster tank?
I think this one is a bit better than the first

+1 on Marcel, DMF has a nice ring to it and the graphics are very eye candyish to me.
I like Marcels also but it doesn't really work too well for stickers and such.
I love the 80s lettering logo but I love the idea of the valve stem creating the D too.
This is going to be fun.

...mitt, i am a member of both the DMC itaila and the DMC roma...yes they are similar but i think its not a negative factor to be "similar" to common interest forums...
by the way the DMC Italia is a HIGHLY indipendent group that does not accept ANY kind of guidelines from Ducati. Its a long story but they just want to be absolutely FREE of any influence what so ever.
A free spirit comunity...
btw my club has pretty similar logos and graphics as well...

Those both look really nice! wt: If I had to choose it would be the first one.
Here is a logo I had created for the Northwest DMLers a few months back and were were going to put on T-Shirts, patches, etc... It's ok as far as I'm concerned, I'm going to work on something different for the DMF, but maybe it'll spark some inspiration here for someone else... heh And yes, it's fully scalable, etc...

You know herm, when i was doing this one, i thought to myself... "the giugaro double line font would really kind of draw this logo across all generations of ducs..."
Problem is, i don't have the font. Do you? Or does ANYONE?
The fonts from the old link on TOB were pfm and pfb files (windows post script fonts...) and I am on a mac. If anyone can supply me with the twin-line 80's giugaro/italdesign ducati font, i'd be MORE than greatful.
As soon as i get the font, i'll whip up the logo.
Hopefully the mods get on and see this one soon before my image hosting goes bunk again... ;D
If they'd like, i'd be more than willing to whip up a sample banner for the top of the boards with this bad boy.
Also, just throwing this out there. I have substantial connections in the printing industry around my town, my father owns a rather successful bindery. I can probably help out with our printing needs, if any.
way back some time i found a site which had files of fonts for a bunch of manufacturers, ducati included. not sure they had what you want, but i will search around

I like the clutch plate logo, so I put this together real quick (it's a vector graphic I built in Freehand):
It doesn't look to hot with the gray background. I like simple logos and designs, which would work for etching and painting and vinyl; so, I think it should be something similar to what's up right now.
Some awesome ideas. Some people have touched on it earlier. Ideally the logo should work in B&W first then we can add color. Some of these look great but will translate not as nice when they go to vinyl or a two-color screen on a t-shirt? Just some thoughts. I hope to get some ideas submitted but have to find some time. So fat I like DMF with the 80's script...I think Herms designs.

I can take care of it . The jury will be myself, misincredible, and Mother. Then I will post a new poll/thread.
I will give all prospective owner's of said bragging rights until 12am EST on May 18 to post your proposed logo.
The jury will dilberate for 24 hours and the top 4 choices will be posted in a poll.
From Mitt earlier:
Keep in mind:
* It needs to be scalable. It should look look 1 inch tall on the forum, and it should look good 1 foot tall on banner.
* It can be 2 parts - a larger logo with the name and text, and a smaller icon logo like the dml meatball.
* It should be able to be transfered into a CAD program for cutting into metal parts (so things with super fine detail like the wire frame monster would be a problem).
* Not too many colors - that drives up price for printing
Quote from: DesmoDiva on May 13, 2008, 06:10:55 PM

I'm still very partial to the Corey designs. Simple, attractive, scalable. My vote is, as yet, unchanged.
I have been chasing some deadlines so I have not been checking back here.
Corey I like the wing logo, I think it will work nice on a shirt, how about a lower case "d" instead.
Here's a few more, I did not do the shirts and stickers as I did with the others just need a few more hours in a day. I also did not use the coffee bean/circle-D logo in any of my designs, I personally don't like it and I speculate it will be axed by Ducati in the future.

Stellar designs. Clean and well laid out. Good representation of both the Forum and the Ducati brand.
In an ideal world, I vote for option 1 with an integration of the italian colors from option 2. If that is not possible, then option 1 for sure.
I would definitely buy anything/everything with those logos. Kickstand puck maybe?!

Herm's second attempt is great. Bold, easy to read, immediately understandable. Can't say I can choose one yet. Like Ducatini's & m1 moto's also.

That rocks on every level. Clean and usable in all formats! Great work!
Well, as promised... Here is a logo standards layout, and a web shot, as well as a t-shirt possibility (by no means final).

I need to get back to doing REAL work for now [thumbsup] I can pretty much make this thing any color we would want, but the red and green really don't fit so hot on top of this slate gray/blue background we have here on the page. m1, do you have any objection if I borrow one of your images for a business card/flyer to hand out at the local 696 open house events? Seems like this type of event may get the forum some exposure to new riders.
Might be a good idea to run that idea by our flounders [thumbsup]
indeed. incosistency = BAD. getting the card/flyer, then coming to the site, and not seeing whats on said flyer could be disastrous. wait it out until we get one nailed down methinks.

Heh, I'd hardly say "disastrous"...
Sure if we were Apple or Enron we'd be insisting on complete compliance with our corporate style guide, but our dislike of corporateness is largely why we're here... What you've done there Corey is _uber_ professional - it's _great_, and I'd expect to see a several thousand dollar invoice for it in a commercial setting.
We're just a bunch of bikers who hang out on a web forum though, I'd be perfectly happy to have people handing out hand drawn business cards colored in with crayon if that's what they wanted to do... There's a lot about this place that "just happened" rather than came about as part of a carefully considered branding plan - did you know we (well, Statler) actually own the domain name ducatimonsterforum.org (and .com)? We only ended up starting out on ducatimonsterworldwide.org 'cause that's the one ducpainter had at his disposal when he went and paid for a hosting account.
What I'm saying, I guess, is don't worry too much about consistent branding, and _certainly_ don't worry about the flounders getting upset 'cause you publicised this place using your own images or logos. When we've got something that you lot have agreed and voted on, we'll try and make it available in every useful form so you can just as easily print cards up on your own inkjet as you can sending the image to cafepress or spreadshirt to get your own versions of our tshirts made up.
cheers,

The jury will dilberate for 24 hours and the top 4 choices will be posted in a poll.
From Mitt earlier:
Keep in mind:
* It needs to be scalable. It should look look 1 inch tall on the forum, and it should look good 1 foot tall on banner.
* It can be 2 parts - a larger logo with the name and text, and a smaller icon logo like the dml meatball.
* It should be able to be transfered into a CAD program for cutting into metal parts (so things with super fine detail like the wire frame monster would be a problem).
* Not too many colors - that drives up price for printing

We (the web geek team and the flounders) are discussing the possibility of switching domains from
www.ducatimonsterworldwide.org to www.ducatimonsterforums.org
it seems to me everyone's already decided to call this place the "DMF", and since one of us (Statler) owns ducatimonsterforums.org it seems much more appropriate, so if we can work out a way to switch everything we've got so far to the new domain we'll probably do it.
I'm pretty sure this wont affect any of your great efforts at logo design, but you might want to discuss amongst yourselves if this change warrants pushing the deadline out, or whether you'd like to stick with the original deadline and judge entries as they are wit the understanding that we might ask the winner to change the url afterwards.
I'll edit the thread title and first post to point people towards this message.

can you keep this domain and use it as a redirect url? It's also my understanding that the Flounders got a bunch of domain names, might not be a bad idea to use those as redirects as well...

Re-directs will work fine and the only cost is for the domain name.

YAY. DMWW.org is okay but too long and awkward and lacks a sort of appealing resonance. www.DMww.org is also kinda redundant. ;)
DMF.org seems to be the saying just what it stands for, an accurate description and much more intuitive.

Maybe this has been discussed already, but does it matter that TOB is also calling itself
Ducati Monster Forums: Ducati Monster Motorcycle Forum and using meta tags containing "ducati monster forum" to bump itself to first result when googled, whereas DMWw is currently sixth? Will that affect what we call this place? I mean, whatever we change the name to might be manipulated to TOB's advantage again, so what's the point in running; ...just OWN it? (or PWN it) That sort of thing?

I'll leave that to others. Here's why:
a) I like my own logo ;D
b) I don't think it's a good idea to play with trademark infringement.
I think the board should use a logo that instantly says "Monster" (hello? trellis frame?) without relying on Ducati logos. I also think it should be all-inclusive, which is why I'm on the fence about the clutch plate. Some of us have wet-clutches, so that doesn't mean much to us...

Keep in mind that these are my original entries, and of course are able to be adjusted per the chosen domain name down the line, colors, etc...

Less than a day for submissions now! :)
Just a reminder, the judging panel (DesmoDiva, Mother and myself) will then pick out a limited set of the submitted designs, then create a new thread with a poll for everyone to vote.

You might have something here. Ditch that font and refine it a bit...
i'm not tooting my own horn at all here, but i dislike the bright logo's (anything with too much color and / or a white background.
my eyes tell me those logos are yelling at me, or trying to sell something (kind of like TOB...)
Submissions are now closed...thanks everyone for all your efforts! We will keep you posted when we have the poll up.

I think if designed properly any of these logos can go on any color background. I agree with less colors is more

Heads up guys...
I'll edit the thread title and first post to point people towards this message.
big
i prefer the new name, but it will block a lot of people who sit behind work filters.
many employers block forums and use software that searches for "forum" etc in the URL. my old employer did, and it was a pain.
keep both names, it should be easy enough. the smf software doesn't care what the root domain is.

Hi Corey, can't see anything right now as I am on my blackberry, but I could see some of them earlier this morning. Don't worry, I remember your submissions pretty well and you won't get left out.
Corey,
I didn't mean to come off as crass. I could not see the image in your most recent post (this morning). I did see you design submission sometime last week.

no worries ;D didn't take any offense :)
are all the entries going to be put on as a poll in one post? how long is the voting going to last?
The judging panel (myself, Msincredible, and Mother) is going to pick the top entries and then a seperate thread for the poll will be created. The voting will last for one week, to give everyone a chance to vote.

why only you 3? and why only the top entries? and by top entries, do you mean the most popular according to everyone's comments or you 3? just wondering, not trying to start anything. i just really liked them ALL and am really curious on what the top entries are by all the DMF'ers vote. [moto]

DesmoDiva and I volunteered, ducpainter nominated Mother.
We are trying to reduce the choices to keep the poll simpler. Otherwise you will have 25-odd choices and it will be harder to tell what the clear winner is. It was all discussed earlier in this thread, read through it for more info.

if i may make a suggestion, why not post all the submissions (i.e. on photobucket) and number each one and have everyone pick their top 3 favorites.
the "add a poll" option will allow any number of poll options and you can set the number of choices to 3. try it, it works fine.
then take the top 3 vote getters for the entire lot and do it again. that way it's all public and everyone can see the voting when it's done.
it's easy enough to set up a poll here to do that. give each round a week of voting.
give the 3 finalists each a case of beer. i'll kick in a 5er.

Seriously though.... I'm designing new team shirts for Tigerbike Rcing, and I'd like to get the DMF logo bit worked out. There's a ton that would work great, but I don't want to pick one, then have the "official" one be completely different.
As soon as I have some images ready I'll post 'em up for you kids to see. [thumbsup]

it would be cool to do a shirt with the new DMF logo (whatever it ends up being) large on the front and then all of the local clubs logos smaller on the back [thumbsup]

I came to this thread late in the game and didn't actually have time to read the whole thing so I'm not really sure what's going on with this or what's been decided for a logo but I'd be interested in helping out if there is still need or interest in a new logo. If you want to see some of my work you can download a portfolio of my logos designs here. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=3E5FD9C607A8167C It's a small collections of some stuff I've done for some other companies. So anyway, whoever is in charge of this thing can get ahold of me if you are interested in working together on designing a logo for the board. I'd do it free of charge, (or maybe for some free t-shirts or something) I would just rather deal directly with whoever is in charge and not with the whole community. Nothing against everyone here, but my experience has been that designs that are subject to a large groups of peoples opinions usually suffer.
For what it's worth I think the ones corey did are the best option so far.

I submitted a vote for one of the five.
they are all quite good, but one of them has more lens flare than i normally prefer.

I meant your submission of a logo...
not a vote for one.
It's easy to criticize.
Personally I liked SuperTIBs' entry.
It truly captures my sentiments on the importance of all things web related.
The one chosen deserves a better reception IMO.
No biggie.
You can never have to much flair.

how about now that the logo has been decided (and its a great one!) one of the flounders lock this thread, and the poll, and archive them somewhere. [thumbsup]
or, as an alternative, they can be left where they are as a source of amusement (or bickering) every time someone replies without reading the back story first :P

That's not lens flare, it's reflectivity.
I don't see any lens flare. :D
The new logo flare is competing with the flare of my amusing yet insightful posts here on the DMF, especially the NMC board.
I am a middle child so I don't like competition or anything that takes away attention from me. [coffee]
I reject your reality and substitute my own ;D

I assume you're talking about the flare...
That doesn't represent movement, to me at least.
