I wave at everybody on two wheels...it's the right thing to do.
I have to agree...I used to only wave to "real bikes" e.g. Ducatis, Harleys, Kawis, ect.  Then one day...a scooter of some type passed and I waved on accident...I thought "Oh that was smooth dumb donkey", then I started to think about it...isn't the wave supposed to be an acknowledgement of another rider and their safety?  It shows that you are completely aware of your surroundings.  So now, I just wave to anyone on two wheels and a motor...hell, being a cyclist...I would probably wave to them too.
As far as the Harley riders go...I would but at about 75% that wave back...the other 25% I think are too high on themselves.

I waved at a bicycler because I thought it would be funny. I laughed.  :D My friend I was riding with saw me wave and he waved too.

The sumpregnant dog didn't wave back.  >:(

Hey all. This is my first post on this forum (I think). Maybe my last depending on how many I offend.
Here in Colorado, all riders wave to one another EXCEPT for the Harley crowd. They only seem to wave to one another. I'm not sure why. It's sad really since we are all in it together.

Here is a list of 2 wheeled user groups from most polite, to least polite according to a reliable source (me) :) :

Dirt Bikers (most polite and fun, yes I am one too).
Street Bikers (always wave)
Mountain Bikers (just out to have fun like the dirt bikers but some don't like engines so they don't count)
BIG GAP HERE UNTIL WE GET TO THE BOTTOM
Road Bicyclists (almost as rude as Harley riders and actually shave their legs)
Harley Riders (seem to have the same entitlist attitude as the road bicyclists, AND think they are Pete Fonda)

Many Harley riders are morons from my experience. Many have the sole goal of getting from their house to the bar as quickly as possible, while looking cool (according to their own paradigm) and being loud (I don't mind loud if it relates to actual performance). I can't tell you how many guys and gals I see dumping their Harley's because they are too heavy. You can see them learning to ride at the local high school on Saturdays when the dealership puts on a class.

Maybe another poster had it correct when they said the riders are afraid to take their hands off the bars to wave.

Interestingly, I've had a lot of these folks try and race me on my Duc (used to have  an '01 S4, now buying an '02 Foggy). They seem confused when I gap them by several hundred feet in just a short time.
One guy actually beat me. I was enjoying the nice sunny Colorado fall day, and he jumped me off the line at a stop light. I was laughing so hard, I missed 3rd gear and decided not to bother. We stopped at the next light and he shouted some profanity when he saw I was laughing so hard.

Sorry about the attitude towards this crowd. I grew up in the Colorado mountains. Back in the 70's, Harley gangs would come up to camp in the summer and their non-riding hobby was beating up innocent people, trashing private property, and shooting at things for fun. While walking down main street in Grand Lake, Co., I had my life threatened on numerous occasions by these thugs. So, when I see middle class, educated people trying to look and act like thugs, and idolizing these criminals, it really fires me up.

Yes, everyone says the Harley crowd is different these days. But about 7 years ago, I was in a small Nevada town when a rally rode through. I thought I would give them a 2nd chance and went up to check out the bikes. Within an hour, I had some drunk thug take a swing at me because I was looking, 'too closely' at his bike. Actually, I was admiring it and he was looking for a fight, just like the old days.
So, after pounding his short, fat, ugly butt, my days of being nice to thugs is over.

The truth is, I am a nice guy (too nice according to my wife). When I see a Harley rider, I often wave anyway, and just don't look over. Then I don't get pissed when the rider doesn't wave back.

I googled "harley forums", the first one that pops up is hdforums.com.  Then I searched for "ducati", a few posts came up...none worrying about us Duc riders; Why are we so concerned about them?

Because we are so Jealous of them.  Can’t be free without a fistful of chrome and beer. [roll]

I fixed it for you.

I don't think that anyone is jealous...it is just a matter of not worrying about it.

Yet we are on page 5 of not worrying about it, and thanks.

I don't care..I wave when I have a free left hand and am in a good mood.
50ers, racers, squids, Harleys...doesn't matter
And if they wave back or give me a positive reaction of some sort its cool...
The whole greeting stuff connects us and thats a lot more than cagers have [moto]

My buddy's brother just got himself a Harley and damn that thing is friggin heavy. However, he is not this stereotypical Harley rider. He waves at everyone we pass. It pretty interesting seeing 2 Ducs and a Harley riding together down the road.  [beer]

2001 BMW 330ci - GruppeM, ACS Exhaust, 2006 Ducati S2R 800 - Bone stock for now....

until recently my crew included a sportster, 75CB750, me(on either my CB400f or 696), a triumph ST and sometimes even my wife on her vino 125.

if the harley was in front, sometimes we'd see guys start to wave, then pull the hand back in.

recently though the harley guy sold the sportster and bought a 1970 T100 instead

Most everyone I wave at waves back. Maybe it's because I'm a girl?

And there is one question I'm just burning to know.

What's a squid? I thought those were squishy things with tentacles that lived in the ocean?

Thanks for the links!

:( I guess I'm a squid myself, since I usually go sans jacket in summer. However, I do my very best not to be the "jerk on the motorcycle"  ;D
