Over the past few days there has been some interesting news released in the movie industry and here's a summary for anyone interested:

1) Top Gun 2 is moving ahead - yeah...whowouldhavethought....and Cruise will be back in some manner as Maveric.
2) Mad Max Fury Road has been postponed (again).
3) Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel being helmed by Damon Lindelof of LOST will most likely have Natalie Portman playing the lead female role. There will be no return of Ripley. From what has been said, this is NOT a reboot, but a prequal to Alien in the truest sense. Hopefully, we'll find out what the deal was with the Space Jockey.
4) Everyone's favorite Highlander, Christopher Lambert, is in talks for Ghost Rider 2
5) New clips of Eric Stoltz as Marty Mcfly have been released on the net. If you didn't know, Eric was cast prior to Michael J Fox in Back to the Future.
6) Beverly Hills Cop 4 is still simmering on the back burner but simmering none the less.
7) Bourne 4 - no Matt Damon
8 ) Predators - was supposed to have a cameo at the end with Schwarzenegger but his schedule kept him from making the part. Plans are in works for Predators 2 to have him "passing the torch".
9) Expendables 2 - Sly says to expect to see everyone who he couldn't get in the first film and a few who were.
10) Ghostbusters 3 - Aykroyd and Ramis are rewriting the script - the good news is they wrote the first one too.
Looks like I won't be going to any movies for a LONG time!!

Top Gun created a HUGE swell in recruitments in the 80s. I wonder if it will this time with more active theaters/hot spots around the globe.
The only reason Mad Max has been postponed again is because we've had too much rain down here and the outback is too green. ;)

From what I read, Tom Cruise has said that he does not want to come back as an instructor. While I do agree that he "is" Top Gun and would agree with you, it's uncertain what role he'll fill in 2.
maybe CAG on whatever ship the newest "top guns" end up on for the dog fight scene.
gooses kid will end up a navy pilot
he will be shot down/killed/go MIA...
cruise will have some deep introspective moment...
he will then go out and avenge the downed fighter jock...
the movie will end with him finally hooking up with gooses wife (was it meg ryan?)
OR, same scenario as above, but the bad guy is some experimental new fighter (the JSF?) and cruise goes after the big bad business exec who covered up something or other...
either way, no need to see it.

Batman 3: To be entitled The Dark Night Rises - will NOT have a Riddler character - and will NOT be shot in 3D.
Superman: Nolan will be in the directors chair for this reboot. He also states that he will no longer use the traditional superman theme that everyone has grown so used to hearing but that he'll do something similar that resonates back to the iconic sound.
Indiana Jones: Coming to a theater near you - all 4 films are needlessly being converted to 3D for theatrical rerelease.
Ghost Rider - Sony cut the film budget in half - so an already (assumed) bad movie sequel is going to be that much worse. It went from 135 million down to a measly 75!
Mission Impossible IV: Has a title - MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL .... [bang]
Top Gun - after officially making offers to Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott, it's been made official that there will be no sequel without Maveric at the forefront of the story. ...duh.

I agree with IMAX, but on 3D...it depends on how it is used as to how successful your experience with it is...some of the directors are getting smart to just use it to deepen the richness of the visual feel whereas others are using it for cheap parlor tricks still...

I hope there are some new movies coming out that A) don't suck, and/or B) aren't rehashed crap we've already seen. I cannot believe how lame Hollywood has become for the most part.

When I was in grade school, my teacher used to have a poster of a frog wearing a wizard hat and glasses and it said I wouldn’t believe the wonderful places a book can take me, and the only limits were my imagination! Well, it turns out my imagination pretty much sucks sometimes so I really didn’t go anywhere big, a little fact that little goddamn bug-eyed freak totally forgot to mention.

well...on cerebral movies....that seems in Hollywood to be an oxymoron...that's why the indie films are so popular in that regard...but it all depends on what you want...generally, a cerebral engagement is a book, not a film...a film to me is a temporary distraction from reality for a couple hours where I expect to be entertained...

I liked both shows. But it's not fair to compare them against one another as they are way different.
I definitly was more of a fan of Voltron than I was of the Transformers though. The combining of Voltron was awesome no matter how many time you saw it!

According to imdb, the 2011 release of Thundercats will be a remake of the television series which has a partial cast listed as "voice". There is a scheduled 2012 release date for the movie.

Space Battleship Yamato seems to be experiencing a revival. I think it's been less than a year since they made the recent anime movie too. Takuya's not a bad actor and Meisa is alright too. I'd watch it just for Meisa though. [drool] Actually a lot of the cast is pretty good.

I wanted to see that and had completely forgotten about it. I'll wait until it's out on disk or streamable, but I do want to see it. That's something amazing and crazy that he did to get free... I don't know many people (myself included) who could do the same in those circumstances.

The guy already has the girl. I would prefer that they would get away from that side of the story and focus more on the military aspect of it.

Apparently he's established himself as an unfriendly guy to work with and now many producers don't care to deal with him.

I think that the most obvious example of the shift in chronology comes from having Sung Kang (who play Han in Tokyo Drift) as part of the lead cast for the current film. I think it's somewhat obvious that Drift is the ugly step child in the movies. If they continue beyond Fast Five, it'll really look bad (in an odd man out sort of way).

I agree, and really some things should just be left alone. Fletch was great in the 80s - it would be nearly impossible to capture the magic of that style of humor by today's standards.

Don't know where else to post this question so I will try it here in Movie News. I am drawing a blank on the name of a sci-fi/vampire flick that came out last year. I believe the premise was pretty much everyone on Earth is now a vampire and the non-vampire humans were enslaved and harvested for their blood. Problem is they are running out for some reason and there is some big throw down between the non-enslaved humans running around and the bad guy vampires. Shit apparently hits the fan and I believe cross bows were invloved. Can't recall any of the actors. Sound familiar? Help with the name would be appreciated.

So that MK trailer is real? I remember seeing it come out a while ago and most people thought it was just a fan hype thing. Looks more interesting than the original 2 movies.
As far as I know it's going to be a 'web series' - having both White and Ryan in it leads me to belive that it's not going to be just a hyped thing. Only time will tell.

Though I love Alien, I must confess that Aliens has always been my favorite. Ironically it's the only one directed by James Cameron and looking at his other films, it certainly carries that feel to it. Not to mention all the great one liners in it!!

I just like movies with more sustenance. I'd rather see a movie that has put more effort into story than special effects. Though a balance of the two isn't bad. I'll admit though that there are days when all I want to see is John McClain blowing stuff up, Rocky beating the snot out of Ivan Drago, or JCVD kick'n it at the Kumate....but at least those movies come off relativly realistic.

Yes, Angelina is hot as molten lava, but her character in Salt is far more badass - she's lethal w nothing but handcuffs (like Jason Bourne, lethal w a *book*). Salt kicks ass cause the character was written for a dude, something tells me the same can't be said for the protagonist in Sucker Punch...
I'm a big fan of Anne Hathaway, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for catwoman. Besides, anything will be better than that godawful Halle Berry version...

I would never have thought that in the course of two scenes, Lucas would take a character -- basically a simpering, whining Nancy Boy -- through him into some molten lava, hand him a Darth Vader costume and call it a day.

I've never been the first to hop on the bandwagon with TV series when they first start, but thanks to Netflix I've just started watching season 1 of 24. Anyone here love it? I was hooked after watching the first hour. Jack Bower is a bad mofo!! I don't know why I never was interested in it before but I love how each episode is done as an hour of a day - very novel approach.

season one is greatness...
it sounds kinda make the beast with two backsed up, but i gained a lot of respect for the show given it premiered less than two months after 9/11 and they blow up a commercial airliner full of civilians in the first episode. it was apparent that the producers weren't going to pull their punches and sissify the show.
season two is ok, but the remaining seasons started to go downhill.

yep - season one was fantastic and such a new concept. It was murder to have to wait a week back when it was on the air.

Fortunately that's the beauty of streaming!! It would drive me nutz to have to wait from week to week! I've lost hours of sleep thanks to Netflix!! Did I see correctly that it ran from 2001-2010? We got RED in the mail (Netflix) and I watched it last night. It was amusing, but I think the highlight for me was seeing Ernest Borgnine still acting. That man is absolutely amazing - he was born in Jan 1917 which means that as of this year he's 94 years young and still acting/working! His IMDB list shows that he's already completed work on 3 projects this year!!
WOW! Yeah, that was a treat. I hadn't seen him in a long time but I remember him from waaaaaaay back in the day!

I saw him interviewed less than a year ago on Turner Classic Movies. What a great guy, full of life and full of love of live. I bet he's a great guy to hang with and have a beer or two.
Watched " red riding hood", should have netflixed it.
Watched " battle LA" it seamed to me to be just another war movie slightly better then skyline.
And watched "beastly" with the GF... Weak, would be the single word to discribe it. Sucker punch is next on my list.

I just watched Blade Runner for the 5th time. I've seen the U.S. theatrical release, the T.V. release, the Director's cut and the Final cut.
I've got to be honest, I just don't get all the hoopla. And the more I see it, the less I like it. It's not a horrible movie by any means, but it really does nothing for me. And I think I've given it a pretty fair shot. And the whole thing about Deckard supposedly being a replicant himself? How the hell does one come to that conclusion from watching the film? Do I need to read the book?

he may or may not be.. it's not really spelled out and there's fuel to both sides of the argument. harrison ford has said he's human, ridley scott says he's a replicant.

the thing that makes the blade runner movie good is that it was the most far out futuristic movie of its time. compared to today's movies the special effects and such are sort of a given but remember when it came out it was the only one that gave sorta a real view of the future, not a star trek/star wars sort of sanitized version where everyone is nice.

The wife had been waiting to see this. Luckily, I had free tickets because I would've been fuming had I actually paid for that! The festive-dance-scene was comparable to that in The Matrix. Horrible movie with acting to match. [thumbsdown]

- Bond 23 is apparently alive and will begin filming in November. It is currently slated for a November 9th 2012 release.

guessed that the Asian countries would become massive financial powerhouses in the world economy (mainly China)
and how they would come to influence the look and feel of a modern world.
Next time you watch the Film pay attention to the back grounds, Signage and other details, it is amazing how much Ridley
has incorporated the Asian culture into his vision of Future America.

yup.. the language that the people use is supposed to be a combination of german, japanese, and spanish, etc...
there are a half-dozen non-english languages that were jumbled up to make "cityspeak".
for somebody's first bladerunner viewing, i generally recommend the "voiceover" version because it gives a lot of technical and cultural background (like the language, ethnicity, etc) that would otherwise go over most people's heads... subsequent viewings are the director's cut (no voiceover).

I had to give it the old college try. I really didn't have that high of hopes going in (and that's even after a few beers at the brewpub) but I was seriously ready to leave after 20 minutes. Take Girl Interrupted, Sin City, 300, and a handful of other films and mash them together in a predictable, simple minded, low rent wanna-be philosophical way and you get Sucker Punch.
I haven't seen it yet.. prob be a long time before Im able to go to the movies.. so, my mind hasn't changed lol..

Even so..it'll still be better than most of the crap out there when the movie comes out.
Saw "Insidious" last night....not bad. It had good setups and held me in suspense a few times. Predictable ending, but thats the way most suspense/horror film are. I would definitely recommend seeing it in theaters (but only at a matinee price ;D )

ok, suckerpunch wasn't thaaat bad....a couple of the chicks were cute, and it had some cool special effects and soundtrack...it was just lacking in plot...which 72% of movies are now-a-days

I feel the same and see many of the current crap coming out of Hollywood to be the same. To me it takes more than
gratuitous violence, car chases (moto chases are [thumbsup]), explosions, special effects, and a high body count to make a good movie. In fact I'm getting really sick of that crap. I'll keep looking for great acting performances, character development, a great plot, drama, and an original story. I expect characters that I can relate to or identify with.

... or hate/despise. Dislike and repulsion are also important characteristics for some movie roles. I guess that does qualify as something you can relate to or identify with. I agree with your post. Hollyweird can be very boring and clone like at times. Although I also don't mind a good, mindless, blow shit up, guy flick occasionally. Went and saw Fast Five last night. Although it got high ratings, I was somewhat disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining, and there were some outstanding actions sequences, but it an altogether different "type" of Fast and Furious movie.
In the directors chair since Tokyo Drift, Justin Lin's style has been a bit up and down. I didn't care much for Tokyo Drift, but I did enjoy Fast & Furious. In comparison to Fast & Furious, the run time for Fast Five was nearly 30 minutes longer, and after seeing it, I really think they could have cut that down and helped the plot move along better.
Warning - Spoilers Ahead:
There were these long disjointed stretches of the movie where nothing of value was really happening - I assume that it was intended purely for character development - but even that wasn't totally necessary.
It was nice to see that they brought back Vince from the first movie - but they could have done more - unfortunatly, he was a very minor and unsubstantiated supporting character. They alluded to possible plot connections, but never explored them. It was a nice historical touch though that they alluded to the scar on his arm from the first movie.
The role of the Rock was just dumb - it was purely a "I'm a big badass" role, supported by bossing people around and standing in poses like he was back in the WWF, and wearing shirts that were about 10 sizes too small. In one scene where he and Diesel are face to face outside, the Rock is dripping with sweat while Diesel isn't perspiring at all. It just didn't work well.
Conversely, seeing Johnson and Diesel fighting against one another was awesome - it was like watching two hulking Rinos beat the crap out of one another! Again, at the end of this scene was a nice historical reference that I won't spoil.
It was great to see all the characters come together and effectively bump Tokyo Drift further down the line of movies. However, the supporting crew weren't fully realized and seemed more to serve as comic relief than plot supporters. So much more could have been done. For example, when the first introduce Tyrese into the mix, there's an obvious tension between he and Diesel, but they never expand on that. Sung Kang who plays Han was great in Tokyo Drift, but here he wasn't developed at all.
Best part of the supporting cast though was the Ducati Street Fighter that they used - always brings a smile to my face to see a Duc used so much in a movie!
Anyway, it was entertaining but not great. It was more of a bank heist film than a traditional Fast and Furious movie. This movie has clearly been left ready for the next installment, but if you stay through the credits, you'll see that Lin has some plot ideas for the next movie that are...shall we say, stretching it.
I liked it, but I showed up with very low expectations.

I feel myself getting sucked into watching this piece of garbage and I ain't got nobody to blame but myself.
I watched the first two and wondered afterward why, when we have so little time on this planet, I pissed away about 3 hours while I'm still in the prime of my life. I like Vin, and wonder if I will ever see him in a good movie. I guess I like the voice, certainly not his films.

because the industry still makes a ton of money from theater releases.
studios get 50-90% of the ticket price in the opening weeks of a theater run. without knowing what sort of licensing arrangement netflix and the like have w/ the studios, it's really hard to compare revenue between the two.
they're obviously making enough additional money w/ theater releases to make it worth continuing them.

the studios
have embraced the "inexpensive idea for many," but not to the detriment of making back their $100MM+ investment in the theater run.
to get the cheap streaming, you gotta wait.
fwiw, i used to have a core group of friends that were all movie freaks. we'd go see all the new movies as a group on opening weekends and some of us would buy all the new dvds released on tuesdays (coincidentally, i used to use the "it's cheaper than going to a movie" excuse to justify my massive dvd purchases).
for many reasons, we don't do this anymore. the main reason is we all live hours from each other now. movies/theaters were a social experience for us. movies are still a good date option, and i don't care how amazing your home theater setup is, nothing compares to seeing a "big movie" on a 70+ foot screen.
people are still paying for the "experience" of going to the theater, and as long as there are no other options to seeing the big movies on opening weekend through the first month or so, i don't see that changing.
my spending has changed, though. i used to buy 3-4 dvds a week, but i haven't bought anything since the dvd-hd/blu-ray battle started. it's waaay cheaper for me to stream/rent than it is to "own" media that might have its encryption keys revoked or need to download content anyway (what happens when the studios decide to quit hosting said content?).
I know concessions are expensive, but how in God's name does one spend $50 for two people at the movies?
Even with concessions, I rarely exceed $35-$40, so it's still worth going for the right movie.

I really do still enjoy going to see a movie in a theater. There's just something fun about it. And really, I'll pay matinée prices - they aren't that bad - especially on those rare instances where my old college ID gets me a little discount. What I really loath though is paying (any amount) to see a crappy flick. Anymore it really seems like there's a shortage of good ideas - case in point: Sucker Punch, Cowboys and Aliens, Hangover Part 2, etc...
Beyond that my only grip lies with the pre-movie experience that we're put through these days. I miss the days where you'd go see a movie and not be put through an onslaught of commercials while you wait for the movie to begin. That really drives me crazy; I don't go to the movies to see previews for TV shows either.
By contrast though, I do like how most theaters have trivia that keeps you engaged if you arrive early, but the problem is that there's never enough content for it to not repeat every 3-5 minutes.

one of our local theater chains (www.arclightcinemas.com (//http://)) doesn't do commercials. they also have reserved seating so you don't have to show up 30m early just to get a good seat.
...can't sneak into other movies there, though. ;D

projection quality- hell yes, especially if you compare 3D of old versus now...but it is much more subjective in certain genre's based on the director/cinematographer
comfort-once again...the seating is much more comfy than it used to be, especially with the integrated cupholders!
speed of service will never change IMHO...so that isn't even an argument...except in ticket purchasing with Fandango and the likes with making the arduous task of waiting in ticket purchasing lines an increasingly less of an issue than what it was many years ago...
Going to the movies is one of my all time favorite things to do. I love being there and seeing movies and being a part of an experience with a large group of people.
However, I have pretty much stopped going to them. Not because of prices or anything to do with the quality of the movies but because;
PEOPLE WON'T SHUT THE make the beast with two backs UP!!!!!!!!
I'm so sick of having to hear people talking, talking on their phone, and generally just being ignorant assholes who obviously don't give a shit about other people's feelings. You can't even get the theatres to kick people out anymore, they just offer a rain check. I don't want a rain check I want to stop hearing some make the beast with two backswad talking like their at a concert.

There is a local theater that has separate over 21 section. They have a full restaurant, bar and reserved seating on a balcony. The ticket will run you $16 for the reserve seat, free valet and free popcorn. Drinks and food are extra, but it makes for a great dinner/movie experience.
Some films need to be seen on the big screen. They were created for it. It is a unique experience that cannot be "streamed". Well, at least not till people have their own 60 foot screens at home.

So Google announced today that you will soon be able to rent and stream movies (in HD) to Android devices. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there'll be another announcement soon that YouTube is following suit on the quality front (YouTube is owned by Google).
As both a Hulu Plus and Netflix streaming user, there's a big difference between the two services. Last movie we went to, there as a family with little kids in the row behind us, there was an annoying (albeit cute) little girl who kept wanting to say "Hi" to us...I was able to somewhat ignore her until I felt this little 3 year olds hand flop into my hair...

That was one movie where all I wanted out of it was to see those guys together. Beyond that I had no expectations. As a result - I loved the action, and payed little attention to much else.

I have not seen the first, but I would have gone in there with the same attitude I go to see all the Fast/Furious movies. You'll never be disappointed when you have very low expectations.

-Expendables 2: Stallone says that the publicly spreading synopsis for Expendables 2 is incorrect but that the correct one will be revealed shortly.
-The Avengers: Looks like we'll see plenty of SHIELD in the upcoming movie. Sources say that along with the famous headquarters airship known as the "Helicarrier", S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will be piloting a more tactical aircraft; though it is unknown whether it will be The Avengers' Quinjet or the yellow/red S.H.I.E.L.D. "Flying Car".
Cast members include: Robert Downey, Jr. returning as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, and last but not least - Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
It's either going to be epically good or epically bad. One thing's for sure; it'll bring a pretty penny at the box office.

-Smallville: for anyone who follows this series, the series finale will be on the CW network May 13th.

Reminds me of the time I saw the original "Jurassic Park" at a weekend matinee. Scores of little kids with their idiot parents, coming to see the dinosaurs, making way too much racket. Then came the pivotal scene where the T-Rex made its appearance, escaped the fences, and began terrorizing (and eating) people. Suddenly the dinosaurs weren't so cool and little kids began screaming in real horror everywhere, many being frantically coddled and hurried toward the exits by slack-jawed moms and dads.

It just won't be the same without Andy though. The guy was awesome as Spartacus.
Personally, I like theaters. I even worked at one as a teenager (even became middle-mgmt...). It's a fun experience. Prices have gone up A LOT. But, I just try to catch matinees or movies I really wanna see.
Also, I've been enjoying the drive-in a lot recently. It's cheap. The food is as good as I want to bring. I can spend 5 hours there without a problem. I can have a couple drinks. The sound is fine. I don't have to worry about anyone else's kids.

The thing about drive in theaters is that the windshield acts like a photographic lens and in most modern cars the distance from the glass to the front seat does not provide the optimal focal length. Experience shows that the back seat is ideal.
At least that's what I would tell my dates back in high school.

When we've gone to the drive-in, we fold down the seats and toss an air mattress in the back of my X-Terra, inflated it fits perfectly. So all we need to do is park backwards so that we can lay there and watch the movie without any windshield problems!!
Used to love the Drive in, I used to work for a Car Audio Store and every time they announced a Dusk to Damn Movie Marathon I used to round up about 8 or 9 good Customers/Friends and have a Movie night, I would grab some big Heavy Duty Deep Cycle Batteries from the Store and we would hook up our Car Audio Systems to the Drive in's Audio system and have a great time.
It never ceased to amaze me how many people used to work there way over to over little noisy section, for the 1st movie we would have our group of about 16 or 17 people, by the end of the night, we would have about anywhere up to 70 or 80 people crowded around our cars, all happily enjoying the movies with Thunderous Bass and crystal clear sound!
Damn I miss those nights.
It's too bad that the drive-in's have taken such a hit because of Imax and such. They really are a unique gem.

Haven't seen a drive in or a flower of youth in years?
San Diego has a couple of them. Went and saw Priest and Source Code on Friday at one. Brought Gin n tonics, samiches from Rubicon Deli, some snacks, blankets, and a girl that likes to cuddle. I'm debating some sort of air mattress. But, the blankets have been working well.
When I was a teen, Mortal Combat came out on the big screen and we used to watch it at the drive in and turn up the bass. it truly did turn into a party as said above. Hell, we've put a couch on top of a pick-up lumber rack and watched that way (completely redneck).

My wife had told my son that if he read 3 books, we would take him to the movies. At first, the wife had talked him into watching Pirates, since it was the only movie whe thought she could handle. I showed her the reviews. It took us a while to convince our son that it was better to watch Thor.

The only thing of note today was a comment made by Vin Diesel about the next Riddick movie. According to Diesel they are really vying for a true R-rated movie this go around but was quoted as saying:
"We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch... In order for us to make a true R-rated film, I must work for scale upfront."
So who knows...
Oh, and as you might expect Sony's got a movie in the works currently called "Kill Bin Laden" about Navy SEAL Team 6's hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Mark Boal (who directed "The Hurt Locker") is finalizing the script which had to be changed from a drama about an unsuccessful attempt to hunt the terrorist leader a decade ago, to a methodical hunt film that culminates in his death.
Sony's deal reportedly will cost them upwards of $25 million in publicity and advertising.

the thing about "the thing" is it was, itself, a remake of a 1951 movie... or, at a minimum, they were both based on the same source material, a book called "who goes there?" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Goes_There%3F)
that said, i think the 1982 john carpenter version is going to be hard to top.

the '51 version was good.
So I just took the family to see a movie and it included a preview for the upcoming "Three Stooges" flick.

Good thought. I thought that was a pretty good, under rated movie for what it was. There are too many redo's out there that should have NEVER been touched. Not sure what Exec thought that making a new Three Stooges was a good idea. He's the one that needs a bowliing ball dropped on his head.
