I am serious, and don't call me Shirley. There are mixed experiences with the ipad1 - some people use them like they thought they would, some use them as paperweights, and some are using them for things they didn't plan on.

I know a few people that take it everywhere. They can't live without the damn thing. For me, it would need to replace my laptop and most likely most of what I currently do with my phone. I'll consider buying one if I actually buy the Windows phone next.
i want! but i currently dont have a laptop and i would use it mainly for writting paper and other fun learning stuff....

i have a blackberry... great for corporate email/calendar, etc... sucks as a mobile web browser/gaming platform.
my ipad does 99% of the stuff i need to do 99% of the time i'm away from home.
They fill a big niche. For folks who only really use a personally computer for web browsing, email etc they are about a perfect fit. With the advent of easy to use cloud (ungh I hate that catch word) applications it makes something like the pads with minimal storage a realistic solution for people who need to to light documents, spreadsheets etc. With the addition of a proper keyboard they are great for folks like my Mom, GF and tons of others.
And yeah people find they use them for more than they had expected with all the apps available.
I've got one that I borrow from work on occasion and it is super handy for thing like posting to the DMF ;D and other casual crap. Of course, I'm can't get rid of the powerbook as I do web design and dev for a living... but they are handy little gizmos.

I used to live and die by my BB, but the browsing was simply painful. I am pretty much set on buying a Windows phone for the "cloud" integration with Xbox. The iPad would replace my iPhone for everything else not phone related.
I work with technology daily, and yes one can see the potential of the Ipad, but from a realistic and moreover a practical perspective, I'd be hard pressed to not call the Ipad a fashionable novelty item.
Don't take that the wrong way - they are neat and can do some unique things, but trying to actually work using one requires a serious commitment; just the typing alone is uncomfortable because there's no tactile feedback interface. We've got a bunch of these HP 2710 laptops with flip-down screens for taking notes and they work well, but the best part about them is that they still offer the user the ability to have a standard interface and keyboard to work with in a slim product.

Assuming you got the base model iPad, they run $500. No bean counter is going to grouse when you save $700 per unit - *IF* it has the capabilities needed
Like I said, I really have nothing against them personally, but find them impractical. My department director (and me personally) would lean most certainly towards a more expensive purchase of an an item of practical use over something offering more glitz and glamor.
Funny thing is that of the people I know who own one, they use it to check email, to read "books", and to play some games...but if that's all the common user does with it...that would make it a total waste of money when you can buy a base model laptop or netbook that can do the same things for $200.
Of course- Not saying the tabelts you have don't have a good place. Typing on an iPad definitely takes more work than a traditional keyboard - that's something I really don't like about them for writing more than just a little. But they can be handy boggers for some stuff, and I think they do mark a shift in how we'll see tech in the workplace deployed in the years to come.

cute video, but the ipad2 definitely has at least one competitor concerned:

Many execs have been using their iPads around the office. I agree that for people like me, the iPad is useless at work for anything other than browsing and emails. If you soend your day looking at docs, spreadsheet and email, then it makes some sense to literally down size your PC to a tablet.

So they slimmed it down a bit, put in some cameras, and gave it a faster processor. WOOOO! At the end of the day, the cameras should have been there in the first place. Down to 8.8mm from about 12? Meh. What your left with is still a content consuming device... little more than a giant smart phone with no phone capabilities. There's still no expandable storage. Still no easily-replaced battery. And, still no standardized I/O ports. You have the App store, sure. But compare the app store to the software suite available to the windows platform and it's laughable.
Tablets have been around for a long time, with better capabilities than the iPad will ever offer. If I remember correctly, apple denounced the idea of a tablet forever, then came out with the iPad and the fanboys screamed about the innovations. It's only funny because my doctor had been using a tablet for medical records for years before the iPad was even a twinkle in steve job's eyes.
I will say this, props to apple for the huge marketing success.
What I didn't like about the iPad, I still don't like about the iPad2. It adds things to a laptop experience that I don't especially want or need (touch screen), and takes away things I do want and need (non-phone OS and a goddamn functional keyboard.)
But once it was out, I played with it a bit, and stopped frothing at the mouth, I am now of the opinion that this device is long overdue for a lot of users. But still not for me.
I never understood why up until fairly recently people went out and dropped 2k on a PC in the name of "getting on the internet", "for the kids to do their homework" and "email". This is like going out to buy a helicopter for your morning commute - way too expensive and complex for the need, but people did this because there were no car dealerships selling cars at the time. I still don't understand why not having a keyboard is better (and yes, I know there is one you can attach) or why a phone OS is preferable to a superlative OSX but the iPad is exactly as much computer as some people need for all of their computing needs, or many people for specific computing needs.
I still kind of hate it for not being what I wanted it to be, but who am I to tell quintillions of happy iPad users they're wrong?

i think your expectations are likely unreasonable.
...the one you currently have is fine, but the new one w/ a dual core proc, (likely) more memory, cameras front and rear that's now also thinner than an iphone4
at the same price is "a complete waste of money"?
let's look at a chart:
looks like the ipad2 is $70 cheaper than a xoom. if needed, you can get a memory card reader for the 'pad for $29 and a hdmi adapter for $39.
But getting the adapter means that in order to have your expanded memory, you have to have a cable hanging off of it... then if you want to watch that movie you have on your card on the tv with the HDMI capabilities you have to... wait... that means you cant.
So for $70 you get higher pixel density on a slightly larger screen, expandable storage, built in USB, built in HDMI, flash support, and 4g network capable. At the expense of 130g (about a quarter pound) and 4mm of thickness.
doesn't matter.
it's white, and thinner.

why bother with a memory card when you can just keep your media on the device?
do you have a stash of large microSD cards laying around?
the xoom plus a 32gb microSD card is going to cost $870... a 64gb wifi+3g ipad is $829.
so even with the hdmi adapter the ipad is cheaper.
...or if you have an airplay capable device, stream directly with no cable needed!

i'll concede double the horizontal resolution on a negligibly larger screen. imho, i doubt that is going to have a major impact on the user experience.
4g capable? eventually, but not yet. and it looks like the "upgrade" will require living w/o your device for a week or two: http://www.slashgear.com/verizon-details-motorola-xoom-4g-lte-upgrade-must-send-off-slate-24135767/ (http://www.slashgear.com/verizon-details-motorola-xoom-4g-lte-upgrade-must-send-off-slate-24135767/)
you say 4mm like it isn't almost half a centimeter and 130g like it isn't nearly the weight of an iphone. ;D
i will say this, in the almost nine months i've had my ipad, i've never wished it was physically larger, had a larger screen, or weighed more.
Lots of pros and cons about ipad2. I'm considering buying one, but now...I'm not sure anymore...still thinking if it's worth the money.
4mm is a little more than 1/8th an inch... So an 1/8th of an inch thicker and a quarter of a pound bigger on a device that can't be carried in my pocket? Meh. I'll take the added features.
MicroSD cards... so I have one in my phone... and one in a Xoom... if I want to swap movie stashes, great! Just swap the cards.
AirPlay... so I'd need other apple approved / licenced products? Particularly in the realm of A/V equipment? Meh, I'll take the standard HDMI, thanks.
4g upgrade... better to send it in for a week as opposed to being told that the new revolutionary 4g version has finally come out and I need to drop another $800 when the iPad 2 probably should have had it already.
At the end of the day, if you like the apple stuff, great! More power too you. I just have a hard time understanding the frothing-at-the-mouth response that Steve Jobs gets anytime he takes a dump.
For the record, I have no use for the Xoom either. [thumbsup]

i'd never walk around with a hdmi cable hoping to find a tv to plug my tablet into. when i'm at home, i have plenty of other media options to choose from before i'd resort to playing media on my tablet.
fwiw, i don't really have a need for the card reader, though i can see some situations where it could come in handy... it's just not worth $29 to me.
AFAIK anything to do with HDMI/video out requires a physical cable.
iPad2, as far as I can tell, cuts the essence of many tech habits to its essence of email & browsing the web.
My only question is regarding the creative side: Creating docs from scratch since Office is required for much of what I do ... yes you may reply iWorks ... but I need something with the complete palette of Word's doc styles, etc.

More ways to AirPlay.
Get even more play out of AirPlay â€" the wireless technology that lets you stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your HDTV via Apple TV. In addition to music, movies, and photos, AirPlay now streams video from your Photos app.
I see what you did there with that edit, you sly dog! [coffee]
The point I'm making is, apples to apples, the xoom has more features than the iPad2 at the same price point.
I don't think I'd use up more than 32gb of space on one of the damn things... probably not even 10gb... but it would be nice to be able to swap in the card from my phone to get at the movies I have on there.
If I were at a hotel and wanted to watch a movie from the thing, I could pull out my handy dandy standardized hdmi cable, and either plug my phone into the tv, or the tablet into the tv.
the weight and size issue... I still argue that the difference of a freaking dr suess book isn't going to bother any reasonable person when it's in a backpack. Maybe the 1/4lb would matter in a briefcase... and you carried it ALL day.
Again, if you like the style and marketing of apple products, great, go for it. I just feel that there are better products from a technical standpoint.
well i have to agree that the ipad 2 is not for everybody but it was never meant to be.
its not supposed to replace a notebook computer, because like other say they stll need to type up real documents and such.
and for peopel that really need to do that they use notebook computers, do you really want to type up an entire document on a 6 inche or 7 inch screen with a 2/3 sized keyboard? let's get seriousl
the ipad is for what most people use it for, email webbrousing and reading books.
the big deal i thnk they are tring to do is make most things into apps that are basicaly touch screen user interface not much if any typeing more like just options to pick and such, that is why they show in teh commercials the dr using the ipad to show xrays and such, really that is more akin to reading a book rather than typeing a full document.
i thik the more that the apps apply to stuff that people use then it will be more integrated. because lets face it a lot of people if given the choice between typing up something from scrath or using something that is more option interface will take the option interface becasue its quicker.

I call BS on noticing 4oz. That is the weight of a king size snickers or a small orange. A heroin chic hipster that hasn't eaten in 3 weeks might notice 4 oz ...
I commuted on my bike for a year and a half with a backpack. I can assure you adding an apple (the kind you eat!) would not make a noticeable difference in my load. You wouldn't notice 4oz in a breifcase either.

one of my biggest issues with the tablets is that they still require a computer somewhere for updates, loading media, etc...yet they appear to be aimed at people who dont use/need a complete computer, just a media consumption devide.

my ex has an iphone and no computer... her app/music/media library consists entirely of on-phone purchases. the only time she ever "needs" a computer is to do an OS upgrade, and she usually comes to my house for that. that said, she's still running 3.1.x on her 3G (hasn't upgraded to 4.x).
i've heard that an apple store will perform the upgrade for you, though i don't have first hand experience with the matter.
ipad should be the same as an iphone in that respect. you don't
need a computer, but there are advantages to having one.

I'm sure they will update these issues. I never said it was without it's problems but the pad needs it's own charger too. Have you tried your iphone charger to charge it? [coffee]
well, we've already discussed the lte issue, and the microSD issue is supposedly on the android side, but the charging thing baffles me.
no, the ipad
doesn't require it's own charger, though it does come with one. the 'pad can charge via a dock-to-usb cable connected to either a computer or the charger.
i've mentioned it before, i don't have an iphone. i primarily charge my 'pad via usb connected to my imac. i think i've used the wall charger twice in 9 months.

Yep, works fine.
then both of you must have "special" chargers because if you use the wall charger the Iphone charger will NOT charge the Ipad, says incompatible on mine. Two other friends have the same issue. Via USB no problem at all though.
I'm not ready to drink the bottom of the kool aid jar yet. :P

using an apple-branded, not-third-party iphone charger shows not compatible when charging an ipad?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4060 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4060)
iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. or, let's look at this another way:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327)
The iPad USB Power Adapter is a 10W charger. While designed for use with the iPad, you can use the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter to charge all iPhone and iPod models.

I didn't say third party. Either way, until they make it with the trinkets I expect to get for that price and a USB card slot or the ability to tie-in a separate hard drive (downloaded movies), I'm not a fan. Wife's happy but I require more.

i didn't say you did, i was attempting to clarify the situation.
as you can see, apple's own support site says it will work. maybe there's an issue w/ your iphone charger?
if it was me, i'd probably just use the 10w ipad charger for both devices.
already been to the store and the "genius" said it would work but when we plugged it in, NOT. Anyway, I'll pass on this toy until something that I really wants comes around.

32GB internal storage wi-fi only xoom for $599 Same price as the Wi-Fi only 32gb iPad 2.

AND it's flash enabled.
flash + SD card = appealing to the porn markets. Xooms are for pervs. ;)
The only thing Apple did to let me down was they really haven't supported adequately the original version of AppleTV. You still can't get netflix on it, even though it was more than double the current version's price.
An ipad looks like a great buy for a typical end-user. My dad got one and it's PERFECT for him. He can web browse, listen to music and watch movies. He doesn't need more. I should buy one for my wife.
Which iPad2 to buy?

Funny thing is that of the people I know who own one, they use it to check email, to read "books", and to play some games...but if that's all the common user does with it...that would make it a total waste of money when you can buy a base model laptop or netbook that can do the same things for $200.
Although it's true most people don't use it to it's full potential, I think in certain applications it could be better than a laptop. My wife and I are Apple whores. I have the 27" imac, the new macbook air, she has a macbook air, and we both have iphones. We got the first ipad on day 1 just on impulse and while cool and fun and handy on airplanes (10hr battery is an understatement) I had no problem selling it.
We bought the new one and felt very "meh" about it. Yes it's way faster and can edit video etc, but thats not the focus. So we sold it. Now that we dont have one, and even though we have pretty much everything else Apple makes (airport express, airport extreme, ipods, igotrapedbyapple stickers, etc) we find ourselves missing the ease of the ipad. She used it a lot for taking tests for medschool and practice questions for her boards and sitting on the couch watching netflix (even though there is a big screen right in front of her).
The point of my long silly response is that even though you dont NEED it, once it's integrated into your life you find it helpful, fun, and filling niches you didnt know existed....and that isnt even broaching bringing it into the workplace!
/end rant
Pretty neato offering from Asus, for those like me that want something in more of a netbook offering. Runs android, docking station/keyboard also serves as a battery life extender (from eight to 16 hours), mini HDMI output, one USB, and a microSD slot.
http://campuslife.asus.com/news/index/104 (http://campuslife.asus.com/news/index/104)
I'm wondering how complicated the charging situation gets (do you charge the tablet and the dock together, can you charge one without the other?, which one gets charged first?), how much it will cost (reportedly $4-700), and which OSes you can run (not tethered to iTunes, but I still don't like phone OSes) but it looks promising...

It has a zillion uses. I will be using it mostly to surf the web, send text messages, emails etc., also for watching movies. It wirelessly synchs to my iPhone 4s so any photos I take with the phone automatically go to the pad.

The new imessage is pretty snazzy, and icloud seems like its gonna be good, but these things are part of the OS. Aside from the "meh" cameras on it, the faster speeds, and lighter weight, it cant do much more than the original one can. If you're just looking to do these things, maybe look into getting an original Ipad. Enjoy it!

It's like BB Messenger, only for iPhone users. You would need a different app to send IMs to BBs.

SMS/MMS as long as they're unlimited. I've always liked BB messenger. It's about time they implemented somethig similar on the iPhone/iPad.

Have you tried powering the devices off and back on?
When in doubt reboot? Is this the only device you are attempting to send a message to? If it's not, have you been able to send to any other device? If they are both enabled and able to send to other devices then it's probably some kind of block/filter. I would test by sending messages on both devices to a third party.
Also, when you try to send the message, the server will ping the device to see if it's enabled for iMessage. At first, the name of the contact will appear in green (SMS), then they validate if it's enabled. If it is, the name of the contact turns a blueish gray.
will try powering both down to see.
Are you trying to send to an email address or phone number?
Let me ask a stupid question... What will an I-Pad do that a laptop can't? I do not have a smartphone, tablet or laptop. I'm handcuffed to my desktop most of the time. After seeing the ads and seeing some tablets in operation, I'm thinking I'd like to play around with portable computing, communication and apps. What is the best bang for my buck?
These days you can probably buy a laptop for cheap. Tablets are more comparable to smartphones than computers. Now, if you use your PC to browse the web and generally goof off, then a tablet is awesome!
I haven't used my computer since. This device is awesome.
I have only used my personal laptop to watch Hulu, since I have not found a way to setup a free proxy on my Android tablet. Everything else I use the tablet. Laptops will soon be a thing of the past for personal use.
I enjoy my iPad. That being said... its not good for typing real emails (beyond a sentence or two)... and when I was surfing for renovation ideas for my house, I found that 50% of websites just dont run on it yet.
They run on Android, but even the best Android tablets are just not on the same level as the iPad. Don't get me wrong, I like my Galaxy, but it just feels a bit glitchy some times.
