Since there seems to be an increased number of unemployed, fee free to request input on resumes, rant, share interview or other related stories, lessons learned, whatever during this "ebb and flow" time.
My rant: Being unemployed is the suck.
[bang]
I think my biggest problem is that I am not accepting "job" offers. But that I am looking for a career change. Apparently my resume says insult me with your offers of literally half of what I was making.
I'd be happy to get that at this point.
I'm unemployed by Choice, the Wife and I decided to move to a new State here in Australia.
So now I'm doing the job search thing, Not a hell of a lot of jobs around for what I want to do
I have a lot of Electrical retail experience, but they only want to offer me full time work, but I
only want part time work. So I gotta keep looking. Might even look outside of my range of
jobs and see what else is around.
Total opposite to where I just came from, lot's of Casual and part time Retail work, no one wants
to put on full time Retail staff.
Weird! :-\

But you got that handsome man and Randy to help you get by.

i hope you all end up with better jobs than you had before
good luck!!!
What's a job? I heard those were extinct. I had given up but it's time to start looking again. Hell, at this point I would work for health insurance!! I am stuck in the State's health risk pool and the premiums are mandated by the State to be twice what the normal premium for a guy my age should be. Twice! It's killing us but I have to have it. [bang]
I miss having someplace to go. Staying home and surfing the web for jobs is the suck.
Even lame part time ones now seem to require this. They won't take a resume in person.
I do have a 2 days a week unpaid internship that starts next week.

Sometimes career changes can be a good thing.
Even though my current, part-time job only pays @ 10% of what I was making 2 years ago, it is the best job in the world!
Three more months until it temporarily goes full time, and time is not going by fast enough.
Day one of the job hunt begins. I brought a tranquilizer gun and a snare. Hope I catch one. ;D
and I mean this very sincerely, good luck to all of the rest of you out there. I hope the tide of your luck comes in.
Thanks Pip! Same to you. With your attitude and spirit, I highly doubt you'll be posting on this thread for long!

I have my daily goals/to-do's, my non-paying volunteer work a few hours a week with great people, my health and a great b/f. Above all, I have to be grateful first. And I am.
I'll continue to do my due diligence....manage the means and the end will take care of itself. Right?
;)
I'll add to the shit pile. I know it helps no one, in fact it only adds to the pile of suck. But it gives me a chance to vent. An it's a view from the other end. (Should I really be writing this in a public forum? No.)
We have a lot of work lined up. We've had the work in queue since late winter/early spring and some from last year; a bank prototype, two new bank branches, a dental office and several residence.
One residential project was going to be a champ for our office; over $2.5 mil budget! I get a call early spring they need to down size the budget, $1.5. No problem. Another call late spring, budget down to $800K. No problem. Got the call last month, they're selling the land. make the beast with two backs me! We've lost several of the projects due to circumstances outside of our and the owners control. The designs that we've started are in slow motion.
Basically we have no work and the work we have is costing us money.
A couple of years ago we knew it was coming. The signs were all there just like they were before all the other recessions. So we saved as much as we could and worked hard to find work so we had a chance at weathering the storm. We've made it this far but now it's time to tighten the belts even more.
We're not a big office; two employees, a manager (my wife) and two architects that work as consultants. My wife was the first to lose the little pay we gave her. The consultants work load were reduced early this year and eliminated this spring. These are good people with families and bills. Those were shitty conversations. They've been helping me since 2005.
The cost of health insurance for the employees increased 35% this summer. I spoke with the two remaining employees and they opted to eliminate health insurance. I helped them get insurance for their kids through the State. Another shitty conversation. It looks like we're (my wife and I) are going to lose our health insurance the first of August (I haven't paid the bill yet.) We had a separate policy because we couldn't afford the office health insurance. DOn't get me started.
We eliminated the retirement plan. Another shitty conversation with they employees.
Last week I gave one of the employees the option of being laid off or reducing his time to a day or two. He opted for the day or two.
I just had the same shitty conversation with the other employee. He also opted for the day or two.
We've been in this industry for some time now (20 years for me.) We've seen a few down swings and they've become second nature for us. We did everything we could to lessen the blow but I feel like it was in vain. Letting people go is a task I wish for no one.
We all still need a roof over our heads, food, clothes, to pay our bills, etc. This can't go on much longer. Keep looking, sooner or later you will find the right fit for you!
Wow. Sorry to read your story. This shit is spreading everywhere, effecting damn near everyone and getting deeper. The gov't. and media try to put a happy spin on it but not many are buying it.
I am the executor of my late father's estate and I'm stuck with selling his house. Which 3-4 years ago would have gone in a heart beat for full appraised value. Right now I could maybe get half (hopefully 2/3s) of it's value if I could sell it at all. And this is in a relatively good market here in North Texas. I can't dump it for peanuts, the heirs would string me up and I'd help them... I'm an heir too! So I sit looking for work and wait for the housing market to creep back up. [bang]
The longer this thread gets the more depressing it could get. :P But hopefully it will become an avenue for good ideas, positive thought and a place to vent a little. [thumbsup]

or a deeper group for commiseration and drinking!
and yes...the economy sucks and though I have a job (sorry if I am posting here innapropriately and if it offends), we have a general manager that looks at the bigger picture and said outward to everyone in this building in a town hall format a year and a half ago, "we will sink or swim together. No one is going to eat steak while others are eating ramen. We'll all either eat steak together or we'll all eat hotdogs, but no one is going to be starving and no one is going to be higher on the hog than anyone else during this!"...and we have had some months where we had our belts pretty tight during this...my cushion I had built disapated pretty quickly and there have been a couple times where I had to choose who to pay and who I could float till the next month on paying....so I understand completely.
These web applications are killing me! I can't complete an app because it's saying this about my employment dates:
1. Start Date Error
2. The start and end dates for the qualification are outside of the start and end dates of the establishment attendance.
???
Over the last 25 years, I've had 3 employers. Sept. 1986-April 2003, April 2003-May 2008, May 2008-current (self-employed/contractor). How can this be "...outside of the start and end dates..."? I tried changing so that the start/end months aren't the same to no avail. uh.
Rant over. Moving on. ;D
Hang in there Frank!!! We all do what we have to do as tough as it is and can be.

I got my final paycheck today. It was supposed to come 2 weeks ago, but the Red Cross screwed up and only paid me for 60 hours of vacation and somehow missed the other 22. Still no cobra paperwork. Can't do it anyway, costs too much.
I've only had two jobs since 1978 and I wonder if working that long at a job actually plays against you when a potential employer looks at your app or resume. So many folks hop around from job to job these days even before the economy went in the dumpster. I wonder if they see a lengthy employment in your past and think poorly of you? I guess I'm old school and think it shows reliabity and stability, has that changed?
big hugs to all going through this..... been there ..... done that.

It will depend on what field you are in, but in my industry it would be fine to be with a single employer for that long, but someone hiring would prefer to see that you had made some advancements in your specific position or at least in your role and responsibilities over that time.

One job I was the co-owner. Nowhere to really go from there. Second job I worked for State District Criminal Court judges. I ran the courts for them and answered only to the elected judges. It was a politically appointed position. Sort of a chief of state/manager/coordinator position. I wasn't necessarily the boss of the DAs, or District Clerks, or Probation Dept. or the Sheriffs Office (they provided the bailiffs) but all of them went through me to coordinate the docket, trials, hearings, etc... everything. There was no advancement... except go to law school and become a judge. [bang] Not doing that!
That's it. Two jobs in all those years.
i have been effectively out of work since October 2007...
originally by choice, but if i had looked into a crystal ball i never would have given up the job i had.
i did not look hard enough at first, and then i looked so hard that it started stressing me out.
right now i am not looking. i have a (new to me) old house that needs all the attention i can give it before winter comes.
2007 just sucked for me too. I crushed 4 neck vertebrae in an accident and it pretty much took out that whole year for me. Then the fun hit with the economy in the dumpster right after that. In fact the fun has yet to end! [bang] ;D Ugh, I look forward to the turn around and I don't see the government helping. It's a worldwide problem and how can any US presidency solve that?
Suppose I should post up here.
Stella, maybe we can poke and prod (not like that) each other into doing that furniture thing we talked about waay back when (I know I haven't really made headway on it on my own). Or something.
Someone already beat me to the "bicycle/coffee shop" idea (Salvagetti).
Pants, when you're back, we can figure it out.
It's becoming more clear that I have to do my own thing. The job posting sites I joined are sending me jobs that aren't relevant to my experience. But maybe I should apply for those engineering and medical jobs.... hmmmm Stella, M.D., M.E.

COBRA is ungodly expensive. I haven't quite figured out why. I remember when I graduated college, I didn't have a job, and that is when my parents health insurance booted me from the plan.
I didn't want them to even think about paying it while I job searched as I thought I didn't need insurance, but of course they did. Never once used it during that 7 month period. The premium was just so damn high, I am sure a cheaper alternative could have been sourced.
Career Builder would send me the most f#@ked up jobs that had absolutely nothing to do with my experience. Ahhh... a phlebotomist?? WTF?? Maybe because I worked with attorneys at the courthouse they thought I was a blood sucker? [laugh] A tax attorney?? Hmmm, don't you need a law degree for that? :P Needless to say Career Builder and I went our separate ways.
Pants, Stella...y'alls got me intrigued. I happen to be a pretty fair carpenter. Mostly cabinetry but for the last 6 or 7 years, my Christmas gifts to family have been woodworking projects. Cutting boards, wine racks, TV stands...I have also made pieces each year for a charity furniture auction we have locally that have all sold rather well.
It's not my love but then I doubt I will ever have the means to own an exotic motorcycle and automobile dealership.

If anyone wants to talk about what it is like to actually make furniture for a living send me a PM. My short answer is that its almost impossible no matter how good you are, the overhead is ungodly, the up front investment is worse, the hours are long. Oh yeah, then you actually have to run the business, do accounting, advertise, bid, design, draft, sell sell sell, go to trade shows, install, deliver, glad hand, etc. When would you be in the shop actually making product? You can sleep next week, right? Did I mention that all of your materials are commodities and subject to wild price fluctuations?
I'm not trying to piss on anybody's parade, but your business plan should be written up very very carefully before you invest dollar one.

i feel for those unemployed. i've been there, several times. no fun, but keep up the good spirits and network! get out of the house, out from behind the computer and meet colleagues for brainstorming, networking, ideas, etc. sometimes, it's too easy to get comfortable doing nothing around the house. setting up meets gives you something to look forward to and keeps you in the "work" frame of mind. my experience with job boards is that they are pretty much useless except for the unqualified, desperate or industry changers. in my industry, i've done well with networking and recruiters that specialize in my industry.
i have found that everytime except once, my new job was either more money, was a better fit with people, had increased exposure and job duties, or provided a better work/life balance. i'm fortunate and hope for the best for those still looking.

COBRA is expensive b/c insurance companies have to take the sickos and the healthy ones, lump them together in the same risk pool and charge the same rate regardless. cheaper for the sickos and more expensive for the healthy. healthy people are better off finding individual insurance on their own.
Ciao.

For what it's worth, and each industry and situation is different, I have always had the best result when I called the supervisor/boss/manager by their first name from the get go.
Saying Mr. already puts you at a lower level, establishing a first name basis right off the bat puts you at an even level in a way. I also never go through secretaries unless I can't find a direct number anywhere. Call their direct number and use their first name, they'll think you've already met.
Worked for my brother too with all of his accounts, he just started at Deloitte in NY.

That's pretty much what I've been reading on a couple of different woodworking forums.
We'll see.
I start my unpaid internship this morning. I am still looking for paid work. The internship will be Wednesday and Thursday. Plus I have 3 classes that last a week each. One in Sept, Oct, and Dec. One more too if I can come up with the tuition.

I have a job, but can speak a little about what I see and what I hear is going on in fortune 500 companies from the front lines. Most of the jobs that have been shed - that work is still needed, so the employees left are doing 120 to 150% of what they did 3 years ago. It is of course better than no job, but it does suck more than ever and people are getting worn thin. Also having less people and a recession creates more work if you are in any form of product quality/engineering since cost reductions, supplier closings, and other economic driven surprises happen daily.
I am not sure when things will turn around, since the longer this mode goes on, and the companies stay afloat, even if barely, then the sparse model is validated and will continue. I am not sure what will break it at this point.
Iowa is still very low on the scale (6%), but some of my neighbors have been without stable employment for several years now.

Stella, I will be in the greater Las Vegas area starting in October. I put in my notice because I am BURNT. I could go on and on and pregnant dog about the job and the management, but I can't wait to leave it all behind me. What will I do next? I don't know. And that is both scary and exciting at the same time. For a few months I would like to just chill, unwind, read a bit. I haven't been home (PA) for Christmas in about 17 years, so I would like to do that. Feeling as if the last 10 years flew by, and I am left wondering how it all happened. Feeling that I need to be more proactive about making decisions in my life, and less reactive.
Sounds like a proactive plan to me!
During your downtime, you can visit CO and go mtn biking with Mr. Fresh (wedding) Pants and I (and Randimus too if he's not traveling).
Good luck with your plan! I'm guessing you feel a big sense of relief!

I have more or less been unemployed since December 09. Multiple interviews, tried to pull strings from all sorts of places. I may have finally landed a part time job that pays close to minimum wage. It is not much but it is sure more than the nothing I am getting paid now. :) Things will get better you just have to keep believing that.
Thank you all for the encouragement! [bow_down] to you all. I love this place.

I can now officially leave this thread. I started a new job yesterday. I was off work, without unemployment benefits, for just a week short of a full 6 months. I made a career change, am making 1/3 more then I was and have tons of room for professional growth.
Hang in there job seekers. If it happened for me, I am sure that it will happen for you too.

Sitting in my new (old) office with dusty plastic plants. Those are definitely going but I'll wait until week 2 or 3. So far so good and my fears of inability to do some of the tasks that came up Sunday in conversation w/the boss have been assuaged thanks to a few of the women here who said those will definitely not be my responsibilities.
Best of luck for new jobs soon to the others!

Sorry to hear that. I got the same news this AM.
Strange turn of events. I found out thru my insider that I was the #1 choice and as of Fri afternoon had actually landed the job. But, the guy I'd be replacing walked out this weekend. He had originally agreed to stick around for a month or so to train the FNG. The #2 choice was in-house and required no training, and they needed someone who could just step in and take over immediately. Ain't that a pregnant dog?
6 weeks of unemployment left. Starting to get a bit uneasy.

A bit of un-easy? Huh? Try years of un-easy!
Sorry if I hit a sore spot, I wasn't aware of your situation.
It took my dad 8 years to find a job in his field (power utilities) after being laid off. He went from about $90K/yr to $8/hr overnight. My uncle is going on 3 years now and can't find anything.
I've been very, very fortunate that I've never been more than 3-4 weeks without a job, so this is new territory for me. I've had to give up working in my field (construction) just to find anything even remotely hopeful.

Beat out by the Masters degree candidate? Maybe take the time you have now to get one.
Quote from: oldfastwin on February 24, 2011, 07:55:19 AM
That apparently wasn't the reason. Outside political pressure, county politics. I spent decades in the criminal justice world and my wife was a probation officer for 15 years. The winner was a librarian who has never set foot in a court nor does she know anything about the probation system. [bang] Can't fight that... even if I had a PhD. Besides, there are people with Masters degrees and PhDs clerking at 7-11 right now. :P Guess I'll join them.
I don't think what your wife did for a living is relevant. Maybe they thought the same thing. It seems with your decades of court experience (in what capacity?) you should be able to get a job with a law firm or at another court??

Don't know what you're looking for, but Food Network had quite a few positions advertised recently. Most were for the Cooking Channel, which is based in Knoxville, TN.
Been out of work nearly a year now...going slightly insnae.
Position one: Interviewing since October. I requested a status update to which I got: "Well you are still our top choice but we can't bring you in until the person you are replacing gives us a date that he will be leaving." 4 interviews...one with the HR person, one with the IT Director, one with the CFO who oversees the office and IT staff and a lunch with the President and CEO of the company. All of them "loved me and what I brought to the table." Well y'all must not love me THAT much damnit.
Position twp: Wells Fargo contacts me and would LOVE to have me interview for a security analyst position they have available. No worries...they have 3 positions available and I have the best background of anyone they have contact so far. So I go to the first interview with the team leader and her manager. They like me and ask me to come back for an interview with the whole team. I meet with them and they all seem to like me. A couple of weeks later I have mailed the thank you card and am still waiting to hear back...I get frustrated and call the team lead up and ask if there are any updates. She says there are but she will email me later.
Later, I get an email explaining that they had pre approved the hires but her manager had not gotten the budgeting approved. When she tried, her boss said she was way over budget as it was on payroll and needed to cut at least one of the existing positions. So no new hires and some poor shmuck I met is losing his or her job.
Position three: I hear from a headhunter who has been very good to me in the past. She is VERY excited about this opportunity as it is a PERFECT fit for me and is with a global company that is known for its rock solid reputation. By now I am getting excited so I tell her to go on. She sets up a phone interview for me with the hiring manager. Incredible interview...probably the best phone interview in my life. At the end of the interview, the hiring manager says to me, "It's so hard to find US citizens so willing to get their Mexican citizenship for a position like this." Huh? Back up a second...You are going to pay me to relocate to Mexico and then become a Mexican citizen? I love Mexico. But I don't know if I want to be a citizen... Hiring manager says, "Oh no...we can't pay anything towards your relocation or citizenship, you have to do that all on your own."
I am about to sell everything I own and go find a nice piece of land in Alaska where I can live off the land and say EFF income.

Well, I finally found a job delivering furniture. Start tomorrow. Not the most glamorous job, but the money is better than I made at my last job, the insurance isn't bad and I pretty much make my own schedule. I've gotten fat again over the last 6 months off so it'll be nice to work some of that shit off(I lost 25 lbs last time I delivered furniture).

Sucks that I feel the need to revive this thread.
Unfortunately my all-expense-paid trip to Adventure Camp did not last as long as it was supposed to...
I did come home to an e-mail from a recruiter I met several years ago, now running her own little two-person shop seeing if I was interested in some contract stuff - Probably 3 to 4 months...
After a couple e-mail exchanges, I get this from her:
Quote
Our clients deserve a commitment from the people we place with them so it is our policy not to place candidates that still have military obligations.
Aside from being illegal (if some of the other lawyer types more versed in employment law want to chime in on this, your PM’s are most welcome), just a nice "Welcome Home†kick in the balls!
As far as the commitment... One weekend a month and a couple extra days here and there?

seriously? i can't believe it... you're so good at what you do...
I was called into the office at about 0930 this morning and fired. The reason given was that I refused to go out to coffee with the Duffy. Apparently, if your supervisor asks you out to coffee the correct answer is yes, not we can talk here. I was also told that all this time I should have been kissing her ass.
3 of my ex coworkers took me out to coffee right after and then 2 more that I worked closely with from the environmental compliance office took me to lunch. I just got back from a nice dog walk with another ex coworker. That would be the one that also reports to Duffy and was moved into a office 5 miles away because we were to friendly and Duffy felt left out.
The Duffy did not have the balls to fire me her self, she let the other boss in the department do it.
I am in shock and scared to tell the SO.
LMT, that is just ridiculous. I can't believe Duffy got away with that! >:(
Is that a legal reason to fire someone? I would talk to an employment lawyer...
Ugh. Duffy is evil!!!

Flabbergasted. And nearly speechless.
I hope something was put into writing that mirrors what they verbally said. I'm not the litigious type (and I've had several opportunities for various reasons to do so) but if this isn't reason enough to pursue for unlawful termination, what is?!
I feel sick and angry for you Mary. And I've also been working quite a bit lately with a national environmental, health and safety company. Will reach out to them to see what they might have.
Massively large hug to you my dear. I hope L understands!
^^^what Stella said.
Big hugs to you Mary.
LMT..sorry to read the news. [thumbsdown] Remember..the s/o is HR if you want to ask her any legal questions about that situation.
Fresh..did you get the work?!
Bick..the s/o was looking at a job with NASA recently. They're still in business.
Thanks all. I know I have done nothing but pregnant dog about work for months now. After 3 years I quit my last job and it took 7 months to get this one.
I have a visceral reaction to unfairness and mistreatment. I used my 8 free counseling sessions to try and make things better at work. I figured that if I got some now tools in the box, I could deal with the crazy boss. It helped, but not fast enough. Apparently, how I react now is connected to the multiple traumas of my childhood. It was not the worst, but again, apparently worse then I thought. I liked it better when I was young and felt nothing. Ignorance was bliss. But, I guess there is no going back. It will end up being my life's work dealing with it all.
Too bad figuring it all out does not come with a living wage and job protection.
I have a line on a lawyer that deals with county employment issues. My spouse of 20 years is not happy, but she did not threaten to leave me! We will work through it. One bean and grain of rice at a time!
Condolences LMT, that really sucks.
Working for psychologically defective people can be an incredible emotional drain
I got chased out of a job because I wouldn't go out boozing every night with an alcoholic boss
whose idea of fun was drinking herself into a blackout and falling backwards off barstools nightly
move forward fast, consider throwing a contingency lawyer at her for a wrongful termination as a parting gift
I am confident a review of her emails would make the case for you
good luck!

Guess I can't post here anymore. I start my first job in several years tomorrow. My friend since I was 10 years old owns a Motorola dealership. He specializes in two way communication equipment and has lines other than Motorola but they are his big mover and shaker. He's been in the business 25+ years and has a great reputation for sales and service in the area.
Apparently the digital age has finally hit the old analog two way radio world and Motorola is primed and ready to jump the market. My friend needs more feet on the ground in his sales force and has offered me the chance to join in. I can't start any deeper in the hole since I am not a pro salesman, I know nothing about the industry/equipment and it's a sales commission only position. :P Never been in that corner in my life. He offers group health insurance so that would be a HUGE benefit to me and my wife. Our individual health insurance premiums are awful and I'll need to sell bikes, guns, etc. just to keep paying them. So the health insurance relief is like making another salary just in it's self. [thumbsup]
Motorola offers a "new hire" program and I will go to Chicago in early March for the official Motorola brain washing. [laugh] In the mean time I will team up with his head salesman and be his "man Friday" for the next couple of months and start learning the basics and the way they do things. My friend that owns the company and I do not want to have any dealings with each other for fear of ruining a life long friendship. His head sales guy will be my "handler" and that way we can steer clear of each other and make sure others don't think I am getting any special treatment.
Wish me luck. I'll need it.[roll]

Thanks folks. I appreciate the kind comments. I know in this "environment" you have to re-invent yourself. It's hard for old dogs to learn new tricks. [laugh]
But my last job in the criminal justice system had topped out. Without a law degree there was nowhere to go unless a new judge got elected and picked you to be their court admin. It was a political appointment so if your judge lost their next election you were out the door too. Tough political business. :P
This is a whole new world for me. I appreciate my buddy giving me a chance. He's a lot more excited than I am. I'll take it a day at a time and try to learn the bizness. But I just don't see me as a salesman. I'm with Nate. But at this point I have no choice. I am tired of opportunity after opportunity falling on it's face. Old farts like me are the ones they get rid of first not the ones they hire back first.
Oh well, back into the morning rush hour craziness! [laugh] [Dolph]
Congrats, FW. [thumbsup]
No full time employment for me yet, but am on orders for a couple more weeks. It helps.
Your buddy is probably not taking that gig of a chance, I'm sure he knows his decision will pay off.
CONGRATS [beer]
Congrats Fastwin.
Sales is both scary and fun. I've been doing it for 16 years and realized that it's nothing more than a relationship business. If you can connect you can often make the sale but if you're pushy and pushing a product they don't need/want then you're cooked, find another target. I consider sales like dating. The more NO's you get the closer you are to the YES.

Yeah, I'm not a salesman but I think I can focus on the relationship part of the deal and helping them take care of their needs. Everyone at the company has lots of clients that they have had for years. The clients trust them and the service department kicks ass and goes 110% which wins everyone huge brownie points. Apparently they may loose a sale here and there to a cheaper bid but those folks seem to make the beast with two backs everything up and the customer calls my friend's company to come fix it. Which they do ASAP and they eventually win over the whole account because of the rocking 24/7 service. No matter what the business it's the after sale service/maintenance that keeps that account open and the money flowing. [thumbsup]
I don't know how I will do but my friend's company seems to be doing everything right. I like their work ethic and the way they take care of clients. Everyone is on board with the same mind set. The future looks bright for them... hopefully this old dog can learn new tricks and help.
I've been in sales for almost twenty years. It's a great gig. I took a regular job a few years back but still keep my hand in the sales side as it's easy money. A few things I learned. Most are basic but the basics are what work. You would be surprised how may salesman don't do the basics.
-Never lie. If you don't know something tell them you will find out. Conversely, know more about what you are selling (and the competing product) then anyone.
-Under promise, over deliver.
-Always be early. Five to ten minutes on an appointment. Making someone wait will cost you sales.
As Muskrat said, welcome the no's. You will statistically have to speak to x number of people to get one sale. I used to take my yearly income and divide it by my appointments, both closed and lost, and then figure you make $500 (or whatever your number is) per appointment. That keeps you from being bitter with people that "waste," your time.

This point is my biggest gripe with crappy salesmen. I will make a point to NOT purchase anything if I catch them in a lie, or don't know their product.
I dropped a couple grand on tools about a month ago and was willing to give the business to a local hardware store. I started asking him his opinion of a certain product and he started to rave about it... top of the line, best you can buy, its as smooth as a Cadillac... then he told me he was excited to give it a try
soon. He then spouted off some information that was just plain false, and I walked out.
I placed an internet order and saved $150 in sales tax.
Good luck, I know I couldn't do it to save my life...
Still unemployed :'( I have been out of work for 3 months now. I have interviewed with 2 different companies and made it to second interviews each time, but no joy.
I just heard yesterday that I did not get the safety mgr job at the bakery. :'( :'(
I like being home, but it is getting old. I have time, but no money. I am volunteering at the Safety Council.
Lost my motivation to go to the gym too. How do I get it back?
Uh! Sorry Mary!
Have you asked either company why you didn't get the position you interviewed for?
I've been sending a few friends/family to this site: www.flexjobs.com (//http://)
Minimal fee for a month to apply for full and part time telecommuting jobs around the country (plus local to you jobs).
Might be something there.
Does Seattle offer career counseling or assistance of any kind?
What about creating your own health/safety consulting business?
You know it will get better. It's hard to see that now though, I'm sure. Chin up!

It will be great to finally design and produce things.
THIS has to make for a very happy 'Diva!
Congrats!!!!!!!!! [thumbsup] [beer]
Headed back to the 8 to 5 life!
Accepted an offer today. I will be working at the Evergreen Safety Council. First 3 months I will be working the front desk. It is the best way to learn all the programs, including MC training, and get up to speed. After 90 days I will move to the Safety side of the house and get to create classes, teach them, do inspections for clients, etc! I did an internship there in 2010.
I get to work half days for the first 6 Friday's so Lucy and I can go to doggy school. They are going to pay me for that time too!
That's great news, Mary! [thumbsup]
[thumbsup] [beer]
Awesome news!!
I'm sure they are happy to have you back.

i saw the USA on a moto, i have cleaned my rooms, cluttered them up again, then cleaned again.
here's the rub with that temp job thing. if i take one, i lose my unemployment pay. those temp jobs don't pay enough to keep me afloat.
i'm looking for under the table jobs to keep me busy and caring about getting up.
i'm also trying to actually work out. it got cold so that pretty much means that i will have to be extremely well motivated to go for a run. lol

well if it's wrapping gifts . . . tell them you would like to be paid cash . . or what do you normally do for a living? apart from following a bunch of guys who later run after a ball? PR? HR? accounting? Dunno, I am an auto technician and I worked in a call center as a collection agent, medicines sales, payday loans, debt cancellation . . . worked for a year for 1/3 of previous salary, then worked for a good salary but 'irresponsible' company .. . I survived, you can too . . . if you need a roommate . . . well, get a roommate to help pay rent, utilities, food . . . really don't know what to tell you
Trav...not sure how well the local moose population pays for servicing...but you could always whore your self out...last I checked, that was a cash only business and it doesn't matter if you are on the table, under it, or wherever!!!

total bummer to lose your job - especially this time of the year :(
when i lost my job in october, i feared the worst - and the stress of being unemployed is huge. people told me i'd end up in a better job then the last, and at the time it was hard to believe... but something really good can come out of this for you too. reach out to the people from your past, let them know you are looking and to keep you in mind for a position if one should open up.

I beat myself up pretty bad over this.
I suppose it is a good opportunity to try something new.
this isn't fiscal cliff pre-emptive letting go kind of thing was it?
Money saving measures is the name of the game.
There was a lot behind it with new HR directors and people looking for personal gain. In the end, I got the shaft.
why can't they put the salary they expect to pay in the make the beast with two backsing job description?
it's not that hard to type it in there. when you finally get a call back and they are all excited and they like what you have done but they want to pay you about half of what you are asking that's just rude.
i'm gonna go become a hermit somewhere.

.........Rhetorical question buy why do some companies have to do this around the holidays / corporate year end. >:(
because they suck,
because despite all the feel-good/group-hug blather and propaganda the HR departments spew out at the employees, the management is as soulless as an xls spreadsheet
because xls tells them to cut operating expense (humans) to jack up profit margins so they can collect their bonuses
because the idea of "building" a national socio-economic commonwealth is no longer important,
because extracting maximum returns, profits and bonuses are all that matter
i was actually coming in here to say basically what rat said.
i got a letter from the company that laid me off in July telling me i was going to get my bonus this year.
looking at the numbers on the print out, all of the targets were met and exceeded.
so this tells me that myself and the others were laid off to make the numbers look better.
i was never deluded enough to think that i was anything more than just a number, it's just now i really realize that my number had a $ in front of it.
also, i'm not going to complain that i am getting the money, i'll take everything from them that i can. lol
I never checked into this thread(or posted up much at all for that matter) but I was unemployed since January and have been looking for work, dropping my resume everywhere. I finally got a new Job in my field a few days ago. It's a great paying job with a relocation package of 40K that also pays all the closing expenses of a new home purchase. The only hook is that it is located up in North Dakota working with a Natural gas company as a permanent maintenance crew but the way I look at it, I'd rather be earning a paycheck and finally being able to get some money in the bank again. It isn't a good feeling being unemployed and I hope you guys that are stuck in the suckage get out soon.

Back story: I am originally from Lancaster PA. I bought an engagement ring before Christmas only to lose my job a week after I dropped the cash. She said yes... She is from OC NJ and wanted to stay in that area. We were faced with a few big decisions. Where do we go and what do we do? We decided to look for employment in both areas.
I shoot an email to a tattoo shop in NJ looking for an apprentice. The owner gets back to me and off we go to NJ. I show him my portfolio, we shoot the shit and in the end I told him I would get back to him. I called him a few days later and told him that I didn't think it was a good idea for me to commit to something when I still haven't found work.
He wouldn't take no for an answer.
They want me badly enough that the owner and artists practicing at the shop are talking to clients/friends to find me work while I go through my apprenticeship (6 months to a year before I even pick up a machine).
So here is to my leap of faith [beer]
I have a fiance, a 2 year-old and a whole life ahead of me. I'll be damned if my son has to grow up watching me work a shitty job just to get by. I'm going to live out my dreams and make him proud.
I've spent an entire lifetime devoted to art. Now I get to use that to help others. I can't imagine anything better.
Wish me luck DMF
