Title: The couch potato get fit thread
Post by: Statler on January 08, 2010, 08:37:58 AM
So for those who struggle with their own motivation and are on the end of the spectrum of needing to change springs out on the bike...

Anyone else slide backwards a little over the holidays?

Back to October size yet?

What's the 2010 plan?  any goals?

Little tiny changes can add up...parking on top floor of garage at work and taking stairs daily..two pieces of pizza instead of five.

So let's have at it and drop a couple thousand pounds off the DMF membership...

Ugh.

I ate and drank my way through Portland and Boston over the last week and a half and haven't run since before Christmas. Not quite back to summer size, but softer than I want to be.

Goal for right now is to be running 15 miles per week before St. Patty's Day. Probably gonna try to give up soda, too.

I haven't bothered to get on a scale after 10 days of drinking and eating with only a few runs scattered in there.  I had dropped ten pounds before the holidays, so hopefully it didn't all come back.

I am stunned by how easy and how FAST pounds of softness can come on.

I was down to 183 from 205 at the beginning of the holidays. The scale today read 188.8. My ass needs to go to the gym.

Pregnancy has definitely made it tougher to keep working out...my stamina and energy levels are way down.

I still get 4 miles of hilly walking and/or jogging with the dogs most days though...thanks Watson and Grover!

I've been trying to do more than that when I can (bicycling, weights, karate) but it's not been happening as much as I'd like.

I'm hoping I get some more energy back 2nd trimester.

i'm currently doing yoga 4-6 days a week and i'm on week two of the couch-to-5k running plan (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml).

i haven't really set a weight goal, but i want to get back to running 4.5mi daily (5 days a week). everything else seemed to fall into place when i was doing that.

Gotta (try) to get fit for a 5k in march... Problem's more that I popped my ACL this summer... oopsie. BTW Statler, that's the Charm City Shamrock 5k - want to come play?

Weight goals? Hmm for me they are always upside down.. I gain weight when I exercise...

If by come play you mean drink like a fish I'm in.

But yeah....I'll run if you're coming up for it.  Should crack 25 minutes then.

I need to find a way of getting back in shape as well.

Since I just had surgery, working out on the elliptical is pretty much out. I can't run because of an effed up right ankle, but couldn't do that anyway because of said shoulder.

I think i might try those stationary bikes where you sit back in them. Not sure how much of a benefit it is, but has to be better than sitting on my ass at home. Just hope it doesn't make other medical conditions flare up, which also sucks.

Too young to be this make the beast with two backsed.

Might have to give that CNN tip a try  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

you still get a pretty decent workout on those bikes. and yes, it's probably better than nothing  [drink]

I applied with our local fire department and got accepted into training company this month. We took a baseline physical test, which I passed, but I want to be able to complete it in a better time. So its gym time to build some muscle; the stamina is there, but the upper body strength needed to deal with the heavy equipment used in the test is not. Looking forward to getting back into the shape I was in during high school.

We went to the gym today and weighed Mother for the first time in 9 months. He's lost 25 lbs just by changing his diet and getting some good hiking in. Amazing how not eating fast food everyday will help.

I'm pretty done with the workout blog thread, but if anyone else wants to join me in trying to motivate a bit I'm bringing this couch potato thread back.

Now that my old friend is playing music out regularly, I am, for better (it's fun) or worse (it's making me soft), going through thousands of calories in booze weekly out at his gigs.

8 lbs up (well...5 up... that last three is from Vegas last week and will be gone this week).

Sailing season is starting (damn bathing suit weather) but I just can't be bothered most days to do any workout.

perhaps I'll just do biceps and triceps like mad and get bigger arms to distract from the middle.

hmmmm.  I'll ponder the plan over a  [drink]

gotta look good in that bikini eh?

like i said in the other thread, i want to be fawned over if i take my shirt over. ;D

but really, i just don't want to feel as embarrased about taking off my shirt in public.  :-[

i'll suggest this chris, it'll give me motivation to run, and it will motivate you as well. pluss you can work on the quick twitch muscle as well while i'm huffing and puffing away.
I'll come down and chase you with a stick. if i get close enough you get whacked. if you dont' get whacked i have to keep chasing.

it's not that i want to hurt you, you're a really nice guy, it's that i need soemthing to make me actually want to run. plus it's a more full body workout with the swinging of said stick and all.

I'm in. The pants are definitely fitting tighter these days. The wifey, Bacon Junkie and I have just been pounding the booze back for the past couple of months. Oh and we all love to cook so there is always a bunch of really good food around that we eat way too much of.

The booze is just a killer. Empty calories and it slows your metabolism. I wish I could cut out simple stuff like sodas and fast food, but I never eat that stuff. I eat well I just have to eat less.

I'll weigh in tonight and let you know what I have to lose. If anyone finds wagers motivating I'd be willing to race someone to -10lbs.

My workout program will consist of eating less, drinking less (and not at all during the week) and taking the puppies on longer walks.

Good luck everybody!   [thumbsup]

when I got down to the 4 pack I was all gung ho and said no drinking for a few months.  That lasted about two days.  hahahaha.

I loooooove good food.

So it's portion control for me.

I still have a bet with a forum member for a nice bottle of tequila for 1st to 6-pack.... but that is now a ways off (although still an active bet...how's it going, Jesus?)

I just weighed in at 168.   155 is goal, but 158 is just fine.  Sac, there's some DMF stickers in it if you beat me. (I suppose betting with booze defeats the purpose).

Thanks for offer of being beaten with stick, Trav, but I'm not quite there yet.  [laugh]

Oh, thank God.

Normal people trying to lose weight.

So, yeah, I got back from deployment in December and pretty much stopped running.

Plus, you know, started eating real food and drinking again.

I'm hoping to use this move that I have coming up as a fresh slate.

With that in mind, my goal is to lose the 15 lbs I've found in the last 6 months.

That wager still open, Sac?  ;)

wait...155lbs?

does that include your legs?

christ. i think if i was anywhere near that i would be in the hospital.

i'm aiming for closer to 200 (at 215ish now, was 230+ a couple of months ago)

if i do anything that builds muscle then i'm sure i'll be well over 200 even with minor definition.
i guess i'm jsut a big guy.

Okay, Carlos...  We're just about exactly even as far as height and weight go.  I'd like to get down to 180lbs.  My competition weight was 175 @ 3-5% body fat.

I've lost some muscle since then, and I'm okay with anything under 10% body fat.  (I'm around 18% now).  :P  Ugh.  [puke]

I think 180 is doable.  What do you say to a little side bet?  I get down to 180 before you hit your goal, you send me some of those hot sauces.  If you win, I'll send you the recipe to my Maple Bacon Moto Muffins.   [drool]

I do. Even worse, I own a bathing suit! I did one of those 21 day no sugar no wheat programs in January. I lost 12 pounds. I would like to lose 3 or 4 more. My summer pants did not fit last summer and I want to wear them this summer.  I also want to go swimming.

I am doing a one month boot camp at the park by my house.  2 mornings a week at 0600 plus yoga on Saturday. I just want to firm up the muscle tone and feel ok about myself. No need to be ripped or anything.

I like chips and beer and want to enjoy my summer.

gone several days w/o coffee!    ???   All while maintaining my current level of activities.

My weaknesses:  beer, red wine, margaritas, sugar, salt, all starches on the face of the planet.

Want to do this for a month or until I notice even slight improvements.
No improvement, back to the bags o' chips!  (And more changes which includes a physical
next month.)

I think that hot flashy hormonal change thing is also a contributing factor.    :P

you just listed my favorites.

Mrs. Yami and I have been doing portion control and no food from a box. but i love to cook so that part isn't hard.

I just can't get my big butt motivated to start running. I need to start, gotta lose 30lbs and so far only 3 have left.

Well, at least they left and haven't stayed and invited their friends!

Randimus cooks when he's home and he's really really good at it.  I have to scale back on the portions myself.

Oh and I forgot:   Cheese. All kinds.  And Mac and Cheese.
We make the home made kind and it's the best I've ever had.  Ever.   [thumbsup]

That's how I dropped the 60 lbs.    portions.   tracked it in the iphone.  was stunned at the actual amounts I was doing.

anything else didn't work long term as I won't give up bread.  ever.  Why would I give up something sooooo yummy.

so sustainable, slow, non-painfull loss over time.

Looks like we got a team for the DMF 14lb Challenge.   [thumbsup]

Here's the "rules" (or whatever)

1) The start gun goes off Monday 6/6. If you are in post up your starting weight on Sunday or Monday.
2) No gym memberships allowed. That's entirely too serious.
3) First one to lose 14lbs wins. This is completely on the honor system. So, um, be honest. No cutting water weight for those last five pounds or other bullshit. Just try to seriously lose some eight. And the rest of us can't give up after the first person gets there either. All participants will be ranked. Should we find a suitable punishment for whoever comes in last?
4) If you post up exactly how many calories you consumed that day, how much you can bench, or pictures of yourself flaring your lats you are disqualified.
5) There will be NO encouragement of other participants. This is not the Tour de France, there is no cheering. Posting pictures of bacon, beer and cupcakes is encouraged because fatties like us need tough love.
6) If you participate  you agree to send the winner a little piece of swag (e.g. - A patch, some stickers, a pint of hagen daas, etc.)

is it first to drop 14 lbs wins, or is it everyone who enters and doesn't make 14 lbs is the loser?

that could mean I'll be mailing a lot of ice cream...

I read it as "First to lose 14 lbs wins, everyone else piles on with the swag."

I have a question on the rules, tho. Specifically, rule #2. Being in the military, I do have access to a gym, but I never use the joint. Am I still allowed to enter? Cause if so, then I'm totally in.

I'll leave it up to the hive mind to decided, and even if they decide no, I'll still kick in for the winner.  [beer]

Yeah, please participate. These aren't really "rules" per se. This little deal is just for people who are motivated by a little friendly competition. Kinda like the Monster Challenge. So I expect things to stay light hearted and . . . oh wait . . . bad example. what I mean is that this is for us fatties who need to shed a few pounds, not so much for gym rats and the gung ho type. The point here is more motivation not competition. Hopefully everyone looks at this as a win/win. "Hey I didn't do it fastest but I lost weight! Yay me!" If you wanna hit the gym now and then have at. But the rule about flaring your lats is deadly serious.

I presume pix of weight on the scale is nakid, no clothing etc. Be careful fellas none of us need to see any bits that may be offensive or be the cause of jealousy or hysterical laughter.  [laugh]
BTW I just started a bottle of 10 year old Laphraoig, who wants to come over and help me plough thru it before Monday's weigh in?

Well, there's that...  :P

At least there's none on my back!  [thumbsup] :D

[cute anecdote]

Some of my students were discussing why I didn't have any hair.  (they're 3 years old)

"The wind blew it off", "No, the bear ate his hair!",  "Nuh-uhhh...  I ate it with ketchup!",  etc...

Well, little Miss Sassy-Pants walks up and says, "No! That is NOT what happened!  His hair fell out of his head... and stuck to his arms!"

The other children looked at my arms and were all, "You're right, it DID stick to his arms!!!"  [laugh]

You can imagine the questions and comments from the parents the next day...  ;)

okay, I'm on the last few slices of pizza...

I weighed myself this morning, and I'm up to 198.5  from 196 yesterday...

If I can hit 200 by tonight, I'll be thrilled in a sick/twisted kinda way.  ;)

'Cuz tomorrow the salads begin!  I will post pics of me and the scale tonight.

My goal is still gonna be 180, so 20lbs. instead of 14, now... for me, at least.  [thumbsup]

ok.  I'm in.

Weight goal (w/monthly water weight gain variance allowed):  124-127

;D

I have an idea of what I weigh now but need to find a scale to confirm.
It will be a stubborn and frustrating 8-10 lb loss.

How long do I have to keep it off?   ;)

Since BJ is going whole hog here with -20lbs, I'd like to note that I'm shooting for the -14lb mark that someone mentioned a while back (Carl?).  And honestly, I'd be happy with -10lbs.

So, I'm sitting on the couch watching the food network...

I get this thought about a couch potato workout...

Every time a car commercial comes on, I'll do a few pushups.

Every time a drug commercial comes on, I'll do jumping jacks.

Every time a beer commercial comes on, I'll do a coupla sit ups.

I get to watch tv with my hands in a bag of chips in between...!  :D

So, whaddya think?  That way I can work out not too seriously...   ;)

i spent the weekend taking a friend on a drinking tour of philly.

somehow I lost 2 lbs.

seriously, the tour was "bar, historical thing, bar, historical bar, cheesesteak, bar, history, bar, bar, bar, cheesesteak"
and when we got back to the house it was off to the dive bar.

i could get used to that diet, but i'm not so fond of the money i'm spending.

Good job Le Pirate!

I've really only made one dietary change. I stopped drinking sodas. I was drinking 3-4 a day, mostly for the caffine buzz. I've been tired the last few days, but it has obviously made a difference. Drinking 2 lbs of sugar a day less helps, I guess?

I really wish I liked coffee though...

Try those caffeine pills.  or tea!

No sodas is actually a huge change, it's like drinking a chocolate bar every can.

Damn, now I want chocolate.   ;D

Last night = run
Tonight = mtn bike with the new 575!
Tomorrow a.m. = road cycling
Sunday = more mtn biking?!  (i hope!)

Road trip with family totally killed my south beach diet... but driving to AZ and back in less than 48 hours to bring my sister and her kids here ... Well. Worth the lack of weight loss :)

Well start tomorrow again and here I go!

Glad this is not to serious, after all there really is life :)
Will loose but sometimes other things are more important!

I've decided in order to stay sane, Sunday is my "Eat Anything" day.

I slept in, ate an entire package of thick cut bacon for lunch, and medium fries and a Coke for dinner...   Oh, and a couple of handfuls of spicy chipotle/lime peanuts in between.   [drool]

I'll weigh myself tomorrow.  ;)

Glad your Sis and the girls made it back to SB safely. (you too, of course)  It was great to see Gabe again!  [thumbsup]

Keep up the not-too-serious work everyone!   :D

---UPDATE---

Since last Monday (our official start),  I've been cutting back on unnecessary carbs and sweets, eating smaller portions, sugar consumption is practically nil (been using splenda or stevia),  and I've only had maybe two beers.

I'm down 7lbs. to 191!!!   Only 11 more to go, but it's only going to get tougher from here.  I doubt the next 5lbs. will come off so easily.  Time to switch from a bag of chips in front of the TV to air-puffed veggie crisps...  [laugh]

Nice job on the flat belly, MooseHumper!  [thumbsup] ;)

I'll let you guys in on my new

5 lbs in 5 minutes weight loss secrets!!!

(I'm thinking of writing a book, so it can become the next fad diet)

Day one: Eat all three meals on day one with some extra spicy home made salsa. Make sure said salsa has plenty of jalepenos in it. Test this by touching said salsa, then rubbing your eye. The meals can include anything, including heuvos and salsa for breakfast, carne asada and homemade tortillas and fresh salsa, and chicken fajitas with homemade salsa (I was on a kick yesterday  [laugh])...

finish up day one with a low calorie shiner blonde.

Day two: make sure your are in a hurry when you get up in the morning. This part is important. Rather than a proper breakfast have a chocolate protien shake (the meal replacement kind, not the weight gain kind...thats counter productive).

Once you have completed these steps...all you have to do is wait (shortly) and reap your benefits of following Le_Pirate's patented 5lbs in 5 minutes weight loss program!

The wife is doing army training outta town for the next 6 weeks, which means PT every day...so decided to cut back on all the delicious food I eat and start eating "healthier." First order of business: Made a giant pot of sweet and spicy homemade chili and rice.

Been playin basketball twice a week
Racquetball once a week
Swimming once a week

Limiting food intake, and have yielded no results....I think im going back to my delicious diet!

I may be a loser in our challenge.

So far our afternoon high hasn't been below 100f for over a week now. I spend a lot of time out side at work, and by the time I get home...there's no way in hell I'm going out to ride my bike. Have been taking short walks around dusk, but I'm sure those don't help much.

On top of that our grass fires have started back up. I spent last night packing up anything important in to the car incase we have to bolt again (we spent 2 weeks away from home in April too, due to wild fires). The weather this year SUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

anyways...still sitting pretty at 4 pounds down from start...but it doesn't seem to be going any further

I'm amazed... I can't frackin' believe it!

Even after all the meatballs, Italian sausage, saffron risotto, filet mignon wrapped in bacon, London broil steak, cheeseburgers with gravy, AND Polpetta's homemade pound cake with whipped cream and strawberries I ate this weekend, I still managed to lose three pounds from last week!  :o

188lbs. this morning!  ;D

I don't know how the Hell that happened...  ;)   I guess chasing kids around counts as cardio...  :D

---edit---

I hope this post doesn't come off as "Hey, look at me! Look at me!"  I'm just very surprised that I lost any weight at all, considering what I ate this weekend...  If I become "that guy" just smack me in the back of my head, thanks.   ;)

a'ight folks, it's time to kick this Mr. Miyagi style. I'm moving - an opportunity for me to get fit one box and 2.5 flights of stairs at a time. That's right, I'm going to move as much as I can, all by myself.  I'll also move the big items, like the piano, but with  help.  (I don't have that kind of muscle, or coordination for that matter, to attempt the big stuff by myself)

Box up
Box down
Box up
Box down

I admit, this is a recipe for a workout, injury, or disaster ...but I think I can pull it off.

I already packed the scale, so don't know where I am weight wise, but if I can simply move all my stuff I'll consider this exercise in snails pace moving to be a success
:)

I think you may be in danger of "winning." I had zero flights of stairs to go up/down for my move, but between all the packing, loading, unloading, unpacking, sorting, organizing, shelf building, desk building, cabinet building, and putting stuff away I'm down almost 10 pounds from my initial weigh in.

I'm sure the two meals a day and not drinking helped quite a bit. Either way, I found another belt notch.  [beer]

I'm doing alright at this point...hovering in between 4-6 lbs below starting point. That however is about to change. I leave Sunday night to go on a week long vacation ( yessss  ;D)...then back for 2 days and I leave again for a week long work trip (noooo  [bang]).

We'll see if those 4-6 pounds stay gone over the next two weeks, but I'm not making any promises  [drink] [drink] [drink]

OK ...

this week's weight in, 192lbs = 8 lbs in  3 weeks = 2.66lbs/week so that means that my goal is quite aproachable ... 185lbs by August 31st ...

This equals to 8 more weeks = 21.28lbs which would make me over the limit so I need to pull back the week I'll be in Belize working ...

In reality, TBJ, I only need 7 more pounds ... I see those gaskets in my hands  ....

Okay, I'm gonna have to go ahead and bow out "gracefully."

I...

joined a gym.

I know, I know. I just got way too serious.

BURN HIM! CAST HIM OUT! SALT HIS FIELDS!

Whatever.

I can go for a plod around the 'hood if I need some cardio. I just have a few other areas I'd like to work on that require weights. As an added bonus, it's 2 blocks from my house and open 24/7, so I can wander in while "lightly toasted" at 2 in the morning, stumble along on the treadmill for an hour or so, then pass out in a tanning bed and wake up looking like I got set on fire and stomped out.

Also, I've fallen into a stack of tasty local brews.  Breckenridge Brewing Co's Vanilla Porter is... mmmm....  [drink]

My new home gym got delivered about a month ago.  I purchased a semi load of 8' oak logs from about 8" to 20" in diameter.   My goal is to cut up the load with my crosscut saws and split it with the mall.  I'm through about 20% of the load so far.  What has pissed me off is that my weight has went up.  6 years ago I found out that I had diabetes and I changed my diet and started walking twice a day.  I lost 63 lbs but now I've put 10 back on.  Screwy damn metabolism [bang]

My main reason for this workout was to increase muscle mass to burn more sugar.  My metabolism is so screwy - I eat 1100 - 1500 calories of low carb, fresh, unprocessed food a day, (mostly organic because we grow or raise it), I run/walk 2 to 4 miles a day and work 45 minutes to an hour on the woodpile with a pulse rate between 120 and 160.  My bloodsugar is in ok control (could be better) and my weight does not go down.  If I increase my food intake even a little or miss any exercise, my bloodsugar and weight go nuts.  I hate having to be in such tight control but the results are better than the alternative.

I'm 10lbs. down from where I started, 4 more needed to beat Carlos. ;)

Need an additional 4lbs. past that to hit my goal.

If you are truly not losing on 1100-1500 calories/day, you need to get your thryoid checked.

If thyroid is fine than the other issue could be chronic dieting. If you've been dieting for a long period of time you may very well have crashed your metabolism and need a good couple weeks of high calories and carbs to elevate  brain chemicals (ie. leptin, ghrelin) to up regulate metabolism.
Title: Re: The couch potato get fit thread
Post by: WarrenJ on June 28, 2011, 03:54:21 PM
Thyroid is fine and I'm not sure that chronic dieting is the issue but I will look into it.  I really don't have any fatigue issues - I walk/jog 2-4 miles per day and saw and split logs for nearly an hour a day with no lasting tiredness.

what's your bodyweight?...... if you don't mind me asking.

If thyroid is fine and dieting hasn't killed metabolism, there is really no other reason metabolism should be that low.

A person with a good metabolism should be able to lose fat at a caloric intake of 12 x bodyweight. A slower, but still normal metabolism usually requires dropping to 10 x bodyweight and a really, really sluggish metabolism might need to drop to as low as  8 x bodyweight to lose fat. If you have to drop to below 8 x bodyweight to lose fat, something is significantly wrong and needs to be fixed.

So, assuming you have a really sluggish, but still "ok" metabolism, and you have to drop calories to between 1100 and 1500 calories to lose fat, you must weigh somewhere in the 150 lb range

6 years ago, I was 285.  As of last fall, I had gradually went down to 222 and have now went back up to about 235.  I am also 14 months shy of a half century old.  There is certainly something wrong with my metabolism and the way my body utilizes and releases blood sugar.  The doc just wants to push pills on me without understanding the issues.  I have been considering going to Mayo to see if I can find someone that has a handle on this.  Its pissing me off.

when we work late people bring in snacks.
we work really late and in order to keep from losing it we wander around and talk. as we talk we eat the tasty treats people bring in.

we also get fed. this week we are doing well.

mon - hoagies
tues - mexican
weds - cheesesteaks, cheese fries, tastycakes
thurs - italian from magianno's

i started the week at 209ish.
i believe i will lose quite a bit of ground for my next weigh in.  [laugh]

i'm looking at it this way though. if i gain weight back then i can lose it and feel good about myself all over again!

The after-effects of messican food is not considered "food dumping", well it kinda is, but more likely hyper efficient processing.

I just rode around on the 996 in full leathers in 95* heat for a few hours.  I know I was sweating.  I also walked the stairs at Red Rocks Amphitheater in my leathers (sans jacket, however).

Reading back, I'm pretty convinced that most of what you've gained back is muscle. Logs are a lot of dead weight.

I understand that, because of your diabetes, you're very concerned about your calorie intake and how it affects your lifestyle.

My old man (who is a health care professional and whose mother died of complications from diabetes) always said that there are two types of diabetics.

1) Those who treat it with a combination of diet, exercise, and insulin.

And....

2) Those who treat it with beer and tacos.

You don't strike me as a #2.

Over the last 6 years you've dropped a bunch of weight due to a drastic lifestyle change.

Recently you've been hewing logs like it's cool and you've gained some back.

How do you feel? How do your clothes fit?

I think that you should absolutely find a doc who wants to know what the make the beast with two backs is going on with you as much as you do. At the very least, a hormone panel would be a good start.

My personal suspicion is that s/he's going to tell you that you're on the right path and to keep it up, and ignore that number on the scale. Just keep on keeping track of your calorie/sugar intake and how it affects your blood sugar.

Either way, I salute you for your dedication to a low-cal lifestyle. I'd have eaten my pets and furniture by now.  [beer]

Thanks for the post.  I've been doing a pile of independent research and empirical testing on myself to find cause and effect.  It looks like the added muscle mass is finally having a stabilizing effect on blood sugar again.  I just don't know why it got out of wack the last 6 months.

Nobody lost 14lbs yet? I figured someone would have by now.

I have not stepped on the scale since the start date but I feel better so I guess it is working.

I'm doing about 2.6lbs/week ... so,I might have lost 11lbs ... but, I though at the beginign I was at 195lbs not the 200lbs I weighted ...so I'm sort of there but, this job, eating out, eating out of regular hours ... messes up things a bit

Vacation this week with my parents has definitely put me behind the curve...

All we seem to do is eat, drink, relax a bit, then start eating again!   [laugh] :-\ :P

Ahem

And me - I got some quality hammock time over my extra-long holiday weekend, the hammock was surrounded by aspens and had a view of the Rockies
[thumbsup]

The whole moving my apartment by myself thing had been a ridiculous workout (how the hell do I have this many books/assorted heavy things?), but I have no idea which box my scale is in.  And I've been eating like a champ throughout, so progress may be minimal.
:-\

At least unpacking will continue the exercise :)

Thanks for the post.  I've been doing a pile of independent research and empirical testing on myself to find cause and effect.  It looks like the added muscle mass is finally having a stabilizing effect on blood sugar again.  I just don't know why it got out of wack the last 6 months.

One more thought regarding blood work.

about 8 years ago the healthy range for thyroid was changed. Many people who would have tested in the normal range at that time would now test positive for hypothyroidism. The problem is, most doctors are still using the old range.

Why?........ the simple answer.......most doctors suck.

Just a thought as to something you may want to look into.

ok, i'm rather happy with my current weight. i've been within a few lbs of 205 for a week.

i don't have a bulging tummy, my ass is no longer a shelf, and i have more muscle than fat.

if i continue the upper body work then i might gain some upper body mass and go up in weight, but that's ok.

ya'll have fun in here. i'll be back in 10-15 lbs  [thumbsup]

I'm still on vacation, but my wife keeps us moving. Yesterday we hiked down, then back up a river that averaged about knee deep for a total of 2 1/2 miles...and that was just one of the days. I'm also down to a consistant 1 soda a week. I'm hovering at just over 3 pounds away from our 14 lbs goal...but that is on a different scale from mine at home....feels about right though. I'm thinking that isn't too bad considering I've been on the road for 3 weeks now and 2 of those weeks have been vacation. I've also been sticking to atleast a six pack a week [drink]

Just finished 30 days of trying out a paleo diet and doing Crossfit 4 days a week.  No idea if I've lost any weight, but I'm much leaner than when I started.  Going to do another 30 days of paleo, only hopefully more strict this time around.  Class just started, so I'm not too hopeful.

The only thing I really miss on this diet is beer.  Everything else - bread, grains, sugars - I'm happy to do without.  Luckily, I found a margarita recipe that fills the gap nicely.  The hardest part, other than the lack of beer, is planning ahead a week at a time for things like lunches and breakfasts at the office.  Right now I've got 14# of pork butt on the grill at 350F for 6 hours.  It'll take various forms for lunches and dinners throughout the week.

so have a beer then.

While the "paleo diet", is a very healthy diet, the so called "science" behind it is staggeringly retarded. The paleo diet is also not original in any way and has been around in many different forms for about a hundred years or so.

shit....there I go getting too serious again........disregard what I say and stick with the margaritas.....they are infinitely more healthy than beer [roll]

Agreed on the science aspect, but I don't really care about that.  More concerned with the results it provides, at least in the short term.

Here's the recipe for the NorCal Margarita:

For the sparkling water, I prefer this stuff since I can get it at Costco: http://www.crystalgeyser.com/smw/cgw_smw.html (http://www.crystalgeyser.com/smw/cgw_smw.html)

Here's the recipe for the NorCal Margarita:

  • Juice (and pulp) of one lime
  • 2-3oz of tequila

2 oz. of tequila will be about the same calories as a bottle of beer and 3oz. would be more.

my point being, results wise, your margarita recipe or a beer will have the same effect on your diet.

There actually is some good research suggesting a drink or two a couple times a week will actually help fat loss goals while dieting and not halt progress as most dieticians commonly espouse.

Running is best done and is most inspired,

when one is being chased by enraged numbers of life forms

greater than can be dealt with singly

I regard it to be in the same class of activities as "prayer"

which is a more dubious pursuit of last recourse

employed when all other options have failed

but prayer, like running, is also at its most inspired and authentic

when one realizes all other options have failed

prayer unaccompanied by the proper octave of desperation

has the aroma of piety to it

which leads us to the subject of running while simultaneously praying

a practice I have not been unacquainted with

in younger years

I see little discernible difference between a "Runner's High" and a "Perp's Elation"   ;D

Can one wear earbuds/ipod during a tri?  I really can't imagine running w/o
and being forced to listen to my heavy breathing (not to mention not having
my motivating tunes) that reminds me of the tennis pro whose grunts can
be heard for miles when she hits the ball.

I've used them for the run on the last 3 tri's that I did.   Some use them on the bike too, but it was too much of a hassle for me.  They've actually come out with a waterproof iPod/earbud combo for those who need their tunes while swimming!   [roll]

USAT events earbuds are not allowed, you can use the 'illegal equipment' at the expense of a time penalty or risk of DQ. I'm the complete opposite of you, I can't stand listening to music while running, I'd rather hear my breathing and what's around me. It's my time to 'unplug'.

There was a Jack LaLanne type gentleman competing yesterday.
Wearing just a....brief (?) dating back several decades. More
fabric than a speedo but still not enough.  At least he was in very
nice shape for his age.

And there was an 84 y/o woman in a very faded American flag type
"onesey" - circa 1976ish.  She wore it well and beat quite a few
of the "youngins'".

i am cleaning out 4 years worth of accumulation and came across a few pairs of riding pants that i stopped wearing because they didn't fit.
not only do they fit now, but on 2 of them i had to pull the cinches in on the waist. [thumbsup]

now if i can just get buffi can walk around with my shirt off.

As some of you know, I quit smoking a little over a year and a half ago.
On the 'It's a good idea, I'll live longer and I'll feel better' philosophy.

Well, I've lived longer.  [roll]
But I don't really feel better.  :P

Decided to let the doctors have a go, and went in for a checkup.
After the interrogation, listening, wiretapping, poking, probing, and bleeding, they pronounced that nothing was wrong.
"Keep doing what you're doing".
Great, I really want to keep feeling like a wet dishrag.

Squeezing the doc a bit harder yielded a squeak about regular exercise being a good idea.
"Do something you like".

OK, I can work with that.
Thought about it a bit.

I can throw a rock from my shop to the local health club.
But for me, those have been little more than a drain on the checkbook.

Running is cheap, and I can do it anywhere.
But I absolutely hate running.

Revved up the wayback machine, back to when I was in the best shape ever.
Back in college.
Riding a bicycle a lot.
Bingo!

Went to the local bike shop and picked up this Giant Rapid 3.
I was hoping I could get a bike with more logos, but this was the best they had.  [laugh]

(http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6023/5982186675_aa0f851edc_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/26339726@N03/5982186675/)

Spent some time switching the brakes so the right hand lever is for the front.
Replacing the seat (which seemed anatomically correct for a 10 year old) with an adult model.
Adding a water bottle, seat bag for an innertube, and a pump.
That way I can get the upper body workout when changing flats.
Oddly, most of the reflectors fell off.
As did all of the 'safety' labels.

I've taken it for a short spin, and it's really quite nice.
I'd forgotten how quick a good road bike is.

And rejoined the world where ATGATT is spandex for the body and a styrofoam cup for my head.  :-\

Nice bike Speed, those flimsy reflectors ... always falling off, from motorcycles and bicycles  same as with the safety stickers, how can they be safe if they fall off?

Enjoy riding it !!!

Good looking wheels Speeddog! Here's hoping doesn't become an oddly-shaped coat rack in a couple of months.  [beer]

Recently got a screaming deal on a mountain bike at a local retailer's "Scratch'n'Dent" sale. First time in *mumble mumble* years I've had a pedal bike.

There's a reason they say "It's just like riding a bike."

It only hurts when you fall off or run into things.  [thumbsup]

Speeddog, I like the mods that you did on your new bike but don't forget about the motor.  Do some tuning, keep up the maintenance, and see if you can get some real speed and distance out of that old thing. [clap] [clap]

Yeah, the motor needs some tuning and maintenance for sure!

A small ride yesterday, a bit longer one this morning.
Trying to get a feel for the lay of the land near where I live.
I found out years ago that riding downhill with a tailwind one direction leads to agony on the return trip.  :P

I'm going way faster than 140!
(inches per second, that is)  [cheeky]

remember, bicycling proves that there is never an equal downhill for every uphill.

also, when you think you are about to have a tailwind, the wind shifts. lol.

Just spent two hours in a giant trampoline park.  That's right, it's 42 conjoined trampolines, bigger than a basketball court.

It was a ton of fun...
...but...
I can barely move.

If you want to see how strong (in my case *weak*) your core and leg muscles are, a trampoline will do that in spades.

Other lessons learned this morning: things that are a lot harder on a trampoline include photography, dodgeball and Irish dancing.

Still hovering around 186. 184 is my goal to win the bet, 180 is my ultimate goal.

i'm hoping to get some muscle mass to get me back over 200. if i top off around 220 of muscle i'll be fine with that. don't want to be too scrawny again.
i fought at 180-190. i was right in the middle of that at 185ish. all leg muscle and no upper body too, lol

AJ,

I'm there and hanging on to it dearly .... Here with family, it's hard to keep it there ...

With meals cubans eat like this: rice, beans, yuca or potatoe or malanga or any other starchy food, the meat portion either beef or pork[both delicious] a little salad and then dessert and coffee this is lunch, dinner, repeat above ... How can one keep weigth down here ?!

Don't worry I make cubano sammich in Panama all the time ... I'm half cuban !

My wife has decided to loose a few more pounds.  A good thing.  After cancer treatment she put on a few which is understandable.  The thing is, this also means I'm on a diet because I eat what she eats.  She makes good healthy meals.  Lots of fresh veggies.  This morning I was 175 lbs. That's the least I've been since the early 70s.  Friends, I'm fading away.  If I don't post for a while; please, someone check to see if I'm still around. :'(  Thanks!  I think I'll go get a doughnut now just to keep up my strength.

Left overs from the family visit - otherwise they wouldn't be here.

If I weigh myself now, what are the chances I'll have lost weight?  Or at least didn't gain any?

For me, shin splints would always mean time for new shoes.  Some time off helps too, try bicycling or swimming as non-impact alternatives.

I've been running since I was 12 and I'm now 60.  I have never fallen in love with it.  If it is any consolation the first mile is always the hardest.  Here in Texas it is now incredibly hot so I now get up at 5:00 AM to run during the coolest part of the day.  Biking would be more fun and I would love to XC ski instead.  But, biking takes too long and snow seems to be only a fantasy of the past.  I told my wife this morning that the good part of getting up and running first thing is that you can have put in a mile and a half before your even awake and know what your doing.

For me, shin splints would always mean time for new shoes.  Some time off helps too, try bicycling or swimming as non-impact alternatives.
My shoes are still fairly new.  I did back off though and am feeling better.  I think I increased my intensity too fast.  Going to do some biking today if I have time.  I am working on stretching everyday too now.

I refuse to touch my bike until the day time high drops below 100. This has been a rediculously hot summer, even by Texas standards. I haven't ran or rode my bike since mid June.

Okay, Potato People...

Time to get this topic off the ground again...   (without the use of a conveyor belt)

So, on Sunday I joined a gym.  It's a no-frills $10.00 a month jobbie...

The main reason was because I tried running in 25oF weather... ya, NO!  [bang]

So, they have the usual assortment of treadmills, stationary bikes, and those machines that look like you're cross country skiing and running backwards at the same time...?

They also have weight machines and free weights.

I went Sunday and Monday, took yesterday off, and went back tonight.

Tonight I felt like it was easier to get going, and when I was done, instead of being exhausted, wanting to puke, and crawl into a hole, I felt pretty good.  [thumbsup]

I don't want to disappoint anyone, but as I'm watching tv, I've got my hand in a bag of raw almonds instead of a bag of chips...  [laugh]

Up to a vigorous 20-25 minutes per day on a stationary, and not dropping dead afterward (or even being remotely winded). Eating pretty darn well, despite the occasional slip and somewhat lighter beer intake. Bloodwork now shows startlingly low bad cholesterol and other nasties.

Hardly lost any weight though. I seem to be losing flab, as I've have had to put two new notches in the belt since October. I almost seem to be reverting back to the monster I was in my 20s (used to lift weights a lot back then).

I was hoping to drop 30-40 lbs by spring.....  :P

So...

I never saw who ended up winning our challenge. I need to go back through and read the whole thread I guess. I ended up in self imposed DMF exile for several months after we started this (not because I don't like you guys, we had other issues...including our house almost burning down for the 2nd time this past summer).

On the brighter side, I continued what this thread started, and I'm currently training to run a half marathon in February. I'm currently running 4-6 miles 3 times a week, and then some longer runs in between.

It's not all good news, though. I went back to see what my offical weigh in was, back when we started=252 lbs.

...after 7 months of running....my current weight is...253 lbs  [laugh]

I feel like i'm getting in pretty good shape, but I haven't lost SHIT!  [bang]

oh well.

thanks Bacon ...

As said, during the holidays I put on some pounds and some are already gone ... doing the same, less intake, more often, doing 2 to 3 rounds in the afternoons with the dogs ... actual weight, 192lbs .... ideal 185lbs ... but no less than 180lbs ... Yes I'm 5'8" but somehow, if I go under 180lbs I look 'haggered'  ...

Anyways, I can go weight myself and post pick ...

Any wagers?

I'm down 20 since Jan 4th. My goal is 47 by May 1st. I run 6 miles every other day and eat like a horse. Mostly greens and juices. Started out at 247. The heaviest that I've ever been. Involved with a biggest loser thing at work. The money is a motivator.

Over the winter, I started doing a variety of half hour kettlebell routines.  I have gotten more toning and strength gains faster than anything I have done before, including cutting up a semi's worth of oak logs with a crosscut saw over the summer.  One of the nice things about kettlebells is how little space the equipment takes up, and what a tremendous variety of workout  you can do with one or two of them.

We have the set at home. My wife bought them, then promptly broke her foot during week 2 of the series (I told her there were easier ways to give up working out  [laugh]). As far as workouts...I think they are pretty good. It's not jazzersize...

I would of done the whole series, but I have a big problem with it. It's a huge time commitment...time that I honestly DO NOT have. Six days a week, 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day. I ended up doing the work outs with Nat about 3 times a week, and then I was still doing my running a couple of times a week, too. I'm just not home enough to do six days a week.

If you have the time though, they seem to be great. Just be ready to be sore after the first days workout. It's pretty killer.

I cut out bread and potatoes from my diet and have lost almost 30 lbs since Jan.  No real working out, just some walking around when the weather is nice.

I had already cut soda and sweet tea years ago and have been maintaining the same weight.  Now I do pizza or a burger once a week but other than that its vegies and meat.  Not really atkins, if there is a sweet sauce or dressing I still eat it.  Big thing for me is no bread and potatoes.

Also no deserts every night.  I have a killer sweet tooth and if I have a cookie I'll eat the whole jar.  So I cut that out all together and maybe have a slice of pie or cake once a week instead of pizza.

Probably one of the better things that have happened to me.  Lately though, with the same diet and a solid exercise program, I have gained some weight back and am having wild bloodsugar fluctuations - driving me nuts.  I think my metabolism just goes straight to burning protein instead of fat so I work out to build muscle mass to burn more blood glucose and my body breaks down the muscles to make the glucose I'm trying to get rid of.   [bang]

I do a half hour to 45 minutes of kettlebells 3 days a week, two days a week I walk two miles, do 100 pushups, wall squats.  In my spare time, I blacksmith and cut wood, so I'm pretty active.  When it gets a little warmer here, I might switch to kettlebells two days a week and start running again 3 days a week and try to get a evening of kayaking in once a week or so.  I usually think
I'll take out the kayak in the evening, then I look at the Monster in the garage, put on my leathers and do that instead.  Gotta have a little fun! [Dolph]

This may sound crazy,

You haven't started chewing a different kind of gum have you? Or bought some new sugar free snack? Diabetics really have to watch out for things with sugar alcohols in them...which happen to be the sweeteners they use for sugar free gums, and various other sugar free foods. The alcohols break down in the body, and when they do, they release a later dose of sugar. So you may of eaten something, been fine for an hour or so, then get a sugar spike.

When i got broked in Nov I was at 186lbs

After being a lump for the better part of 5 months i'm at 214lbs and can barely crank out 10 pushups.

I will be rebuilding myself. more upper body to go with the legs.
also, i have found planks. they suck, but damn do they show your weak spots. I'm at 1:05 straight and 30secs for sides. I hope to have doubled that time by June.

The main bloodsugar issue I'm having is getting up in the morning with a fairly high number after 12 hours of fasting, working out for a half hour or more, checking my bloodsugar an hour after I'm done with the workout and my bloodsugar is up 100 points with no intake except a couple sips of filtered water.  I eat some breakfast and two hours later, I've dropped 100 points.  Those wild swings get to you.   My A1C is right at 7.0 so I don't know what is going on.  It does this regardless of bloodsugar medication - I've tried it with and without.

As far as body strengthening, I have probably gotten more benefit from kettlebells than anything I have done.  Start real light and get good tecnhique before upping the weight.  I started out with a 15 lb bell in October and I just stepped up to a 50 lb.  Super core strengthening.  45 minutes with the 50 lb bell sucks, but I like the results.  I'm probably stronger now then I have been in the last 20 years - I'm 5 months short of the half century mark.

I keep a close eye on the sugar alcohols in foods.  I eat very little processed food.  I live out in the sticks and we have a large garden.  We do a lot of preserving and pretty much eat what we raised, grew or hunted.  Even made some tofu from soybeans off the farm.  Worked ok!

This is how I eat as well and have been doing it for about 15 years, with the exception of a two year break in which I gained about 40lbs. until I got straightened out and back on track. Now it's an in vogue diet with a whole historically dubious story surrounding it as a marketing tool, otherwise known as the "paleolithic diet". Back before the days of the paleo nonsense we just called it "the dead animals and green stuff diet".

The first month is hard, after that its not too bad at all.

Agreed, the first bit was torture and now it's no big deal.  I still crave a good sandwich and it makes it difficult to find food because I work on the road.  (no more sandwich shops or hotdogs from street vendors)

I've read somewhere that every 5lbs you lose is equal to a 1HP gain, soo I plan on gaining 7HP. Getting the motivation to go for a run instead of a ride is the hard part.

And, according to Oprah's Dr. Quack, every 4 hp you add that way translates into another 1" of manhood.

I weighed in at 183 this morning.  I'm planning on getting down to 128 and staring my new "acting" career.

Well my 4 month plan did not go as well as hoped, I'm down 33lbs since Jan 1st. Hoped to be 47. New goal is 180 by end of August. Which is another 34lbs in 4 months. Definitely will take some hard work.

I hit the gym 3 or 4 times a week in Nov and Dec and lost 12 pounds. Then I stopped going and gained it all back. Getting a second dog that walks VERY fast has now taken 5 off in just over 2 weeks!  Back to the gym too. It is me time away from the dogs.

So...

After 18 months of sitting around and not exercising, I started a run/walk program in March.

Our goal 5K is coming up in a few weeks.

So far so good.  Overall I feel a lot stronger and less sloth like.

The # on the scaled hasn't budged, but my clothes are fitting different.   [thumbsup]

I have also signed up for a half marathon training program to keep me motivated.

That goal race is August 31.

I'm looking forward to the mental relief that I get through running.
